A fourth-order PDE denoising model with an adaptive relaxation method
In this paper, an adaptive relaxation method and a discontinuity treatment of edges are proposed to improve the digital image denoising process by using the fourth-order partial differential equation (known as the YK model) first proposed by You and Kaveh. Since the YK model would generate some speckles into the denoised image, a relaxation method is incorporated into the model to reduce the formation of isolated speckles. An additional improvement is employed to handle the discontinuity on the edges of the image. In order to stop the iteration automatically, a control of the iteration is integrated into the denoising process. Numerical results demonstrate that such modifications not only make the denoised image look more natural, but also achieve a higher value of PSNR
Formation of the seed black holes: a role of quark nuggets?
Strange quark nuggets (SQNs) could be the relics of the cosmological QCD
phase transition, and they could very likely be the candidate of cold quark
matter if survived the cooling of the later Universe, although the formation
and evolution of these SQNs depend on the physical state of the hot QGP
(quark-gluon plasma) phase and the state of cold quark matter. We reconsider
the possibility of SQNs as cold dark matter, and find that the formation of
black holes in primordial halos could be significantly different from the
standard scenario. In a primordial halo, the collision between gas and SQNs
could be frequent enough, and thus the viscosity acting on each SQN would
decrease its angular momentum and make it to sink into the center of the halo,
as well as heat the gas. The SQNs with baryon numbers less than could
assemble in the center of the halo before the formation of primordial stars. A
black hole could form by merger of these SQNs, and then its mass could quickly
become about or higher, by accreting the surrounding SQNs or
gas. The black holes formed in this way could be the seeds for the supermassive
black holes at redshift as high as .Comment: 15 page
Revisiting the -Meson Production at the Hadronic Colliders
The production of heavy-flavored hadron at the hadronic colliders provides a
challenging opportunity to test the validity of pQCD predictions. There are two
mechanisms for the hadroproduction, i.e. the gluon-gluon fusion
mechanism via the subprocess and the
extrinsic heavy quark mechanism via the subprocesses and , both of which shall have sizable
contributions in proper kinematic region. Different from the
fixed-flavor-number scheme (FFNS) previously adopted in the literature, we
study the hadroproduction under the general-mass
variable-flavor-number scheme (GM-VFNS), in which we can consistently deal with
the double counting problem from the above two mechanisms. Properties for the
hadroproduction are discussed. To be useful reference, a
comparative study of FFNS and GM-VFNS is presented. Both of which can provide
reasonable estimations for the hadroproduction. At the Tevatron,
the difference between these two schemes is small, however such difference is
obvious at the LHC. The forthcoming more precise data on LHC shall provide a
good chance to check which scheme is more appropriate to deal with the
-meson production and to further study the heavy quark components in
hadrons.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. To match the published version. To be

Effect of minimalist and maximalist shoes on impact loading and footstrike pattern in habitual rearfoot strike trail runners: an in-field study
Running-related injuries among trail runners are very common and footwear selection may modulate the injury risk. However, most previous studies were conducted in a laboratory environment. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of two contrasting footwear design, minimalist (MIN) and maximalist shoes (MAX), on the running biomechanics of trail runners during running on a natural trail. Eighteen habitual rearfoot strike trail runners completed level, uphill and downhill running at their preferred speeds in both shod conditions. Peak tibial acceleration, strike index and footstrike pattern were compared between the two footwear and slopes. Interactions of footwear and slope were not detected for all the selected variables. There was no significant effect from footwear (F=1.23, p=0.27) and slope (F=2.49, p=0.09) on peak tibial acceleration and there was no footwear effect on strike index (F=3.82, p=0.056). A significant main effect of slope on strike index (F=13.24, p<0.001) was found. Strike index during uphill running was significantly greater (i.e., landing with a more anterior foot strike) when compared with level (p<0.001, Cohen’s d=1.72) or downhill running (p<0.001, Cohen’s d=1.44) in either MIN or MAX. The majority of habitual rearfoot strike runners switched to midfoot strike during uphill running while maintaining a rearfoot strike pattern during level or downhill running. In summary, wearing either one of the two contrasting footwear (MIN or MAX) demonstrated no effect on impact loading and footstrike pattern in habitual rearfoot strike trail runners running on a natural trail with different slopes
Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation at \sqrt{s}= 3.773 and 3.650 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3 pb taken at GeV
and 6.5 pb taken at GeV with the BESII detector at the
BEPC collider, we have measured the observed cross sections for 12 exclusive
light hadron final states produced in annihilation at the two energy
points. We have also set the upper limits on the observed cross sections and
the branching fractions for decay to these final states at 90%

Search for the Rare Decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e, J/Psi --> D- e+ nu_e, and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e-
We report on a search for the decays J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c., J/Psi -->
D- e+ nu_e + c.c., and J/Psi --> D0bar e+ e- + c.c. in a sample of 5.8 * 10^7
J/Psi events collected with the BESII detector at the BEPC. No excess of signal
above background is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the
branching fractions are set: B(J/Psi --> Ds- e+ nu_e + c.c.)<4.8*10^-5, B(J/Psi
--> D- e+ nu_e + c.c.) D0bar e+ e- + c.c.)<1.1*10^-5Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Measurements of psi(2S) decays to octet baryon-antibaryon pairs
With a sample of 14 million psi(2S) events collected by the BESII detector at
the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), the decay channels psi(2S)->p
p-bar, Lambda Lambda-bar, Sigma0 Sigma0-bar, Xi Xi-bar are measured, and their
branching ratios are determined to be (3.36+-0.09+-0.24)*10E-4,
(3.39+-0.20+-0.32)*10E-4, (2.35+-0.36+-0.32)*10E-4, (3.03+-0.40+-0.32)*10E-4,
respectively. In the decay psi(2S)->p p-bar, the angular distribution parameter
alpha is determined to be 0.82+-0.17+-0.04.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Direct Measurements of the Branching Fractions for and and Determinations of the Form Factors and
The absolute branching fractions for the decays and

tagged sample from the data collected around 3.773 GeV with the
BES-II detector at the BEPC. In the system recoiling against the singly tagged
meson, events for and events for decays are observed. Those yield
the absolute branching fractions to be and . The

factors is measured to be .Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
satisfactory.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, uses elsart.cls, to be submitted to NIM
