A GCM simulation of the earth-atmosphere radiation balance for winter and summer
The radiation balance of the earth-atmosphere system simulated by using the general circulation model (GCM) of the Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences (GLAS) is examined in regards to its graphical distribution, zonally-averaged distribution, and global mean. Most of the main features of the radiation balance at the top of the atmosphere are reasonably simulated, with some differences in the detailed structure of the patterns and intensities for both summer and winter in comparison with values as derived from Nimbus and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite observations. vSkyConf: Cloud-assisted Multi-party Mobile Video Conferencing
As an important application in the busy world today, mobile video
conferencing facilitates virtual face-to-face communication with friends,
families and colleagues, via their mobile devices on the move. However, how to
provision high-quality, multi-party video conferencing experiences over mobile
devices is still an open challenge. The fundamental reason behind is the lack
of computation and communication capacities on the mobile devices, to scale to
large conferencing sessions. In this paper, we present vSkyConf, a
cloud-assisted mobile video conferencing system to fundamentally improve the
quality and scale of multi-party mobile video conferencing. By novelly
employing a surrogate virtual machine in the cloud for each mobile user, we
allow fully scalable communication among the conference participants via their
surrogates, rather than directly. The surrogates exchange conferencing streams
among each other, transcode the streams to the most appropriate bit rates, and
buffer the streams for the most efficient delivery to the mobile recipients. A
fully decentralized, optimal algorithm is designed to decide the best paths of
streams and the most suitable surrogates for video transcoding along the paths,
such that the limited bandwidth is fully utilized to deliver streams of the
highest possible quality to the mobile recipients. We also carefully tailor a
buffering mechanism on each surrogate to cooperate with optimal stream
distribution. We have implemented vSkyConf based on Amazon EC2 and verified the
excellent performance of our design, as compared to the widely adopted unicast

High Dynamic Range RF Front End with Noise Cancellation and Linearization for WiMAX Receivers
This research deals with verification of the high dynamic range for a heterodyne radio frequency (RF) front end. A 2.6 GHz RF front end is designed and implemented in a hybrid microwave integrated circuit (HMIC) for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) receivers. The heterodyne RF front end consists of a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with noise cancellation, an RF bandpass filter (BPF), a downconverter with linearization, and an intermediate frequency (IF) BPF. A noise canceling technique used in the low-noise amplifier eliminates a thermal noise and then reduces the noise figure (NF) of the RF front end by 0.9 dB. Use of a downconverter with diode linearizer also compensates for gain compression, which increases the input-referred third-order intercept point (IIP3) of the RF front end by 4.3 dB. The proposed method substantially increases the spurious-free dynamic range (DRf) of the RF front end by 3.5 dB
Effect of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on magnetic vortex
The effect of the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction on the vortex in magnetic
microdisk was investigated by micro magnetic simulation based on the Landau
Lifshitz Gilbert equation. Our results show that the DM interaction modifies
the size of the vortex core, and also induces an out of plane magnetization
component at the edge and inside the disk. The DM interaction can destabilizes
one vortex handedness, generate a bias field to the vortex core and couple the
vortex polarity and chirality. This DM-interaction-induced coupling can
therefore provide a new way to control vortex polarity and chirality
