NANOCOMPOSITES OF POLY(LACTIC ACID) REINFORCED WITH CELLULOSE NANOFIBRILS

    Get PDF
A chemo-mechanical method was used to prepare cellulose nanofibrils dispersed uniformly in an organic solvent. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 1000) was added to the matrix as a compatibilizer to improve the interfacial interaction between the hydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and the hydrophilic cellulose nanofibrils. The composites obtained by solvent casting methods from N,N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) were characterized by tensile testing machine, atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The tensile test results indicated that, by adding PEG to the PLA and the cellulose nanofibrils matrix, the tensile strength and the elongation rate increased by 56.7% and 60%, respectively, compared with the PLA/cellulose nanofibrils composites. The FT-IR analysis successfully showed that PEG improved the intermolecular interaction, which is based on the existence of inter-molecular hydrogen bonding among PLA, PEG, and cellulose nanofibrils

Constructing the Lyapunov Function through Solving Positive Dimensional Polynomial System

We propose an approach for constructing Lyapunov function in quadratic form of a differential system. First, positive polynomial system is obtained via the local property of the Lyapunov function as well as its derivative. Then, the positive polynomial system is converted into an equation system by adding some variables. Finally, numerical technique is applied to solve the equation system. Some experiments show the efficiency of our new algorithm

Increased fibroblast functionality on CNN2-loaded titania nanotubes

Infection and epithelial downgrowth are major problems associated with maxillofacial percutaneous implants. These complications are mainly due to the improper closure of the implant–skin interface. Therefore, designing a percutaneous implant that better promotes the formation of a stable soft tissue biologic seal around percutaneous sites is highly desirable. Additionally, the fibroblast has been proven to play an important role in the formation of biologic seals. In this study, titania nanotubes were filled with 11.2 kDa C-terminal CCN2 (connective tissue growth factor) fragment, which could exert full CCN2 activity to increase the biological functionality of fibroblasts. This drug delivery system was fabricated on a titanium implant surface. CCN2 was loaded into anodized titania nanotubes using a simplified lyophilization method and the loading efficiency was approximately 80%. Then, the release kinetics of CCN2 from these nanotubes was investigated. Furthermore, the influence of CCN2-loaded titania nanotubes on fibroblast functionality was examined. The results revealed increased fibroblast adhesion at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours, increased fibroblast viability over the course of 5 days, as well as enhanced actin cytoskeleton organization on CCN2-loaded titania nanotubes surfaces compared to uncoated, unmodified counterparts. Therefore, the results from this in vitro study demonstrate that CCN2-loaded titania nanotubes have the ability to increase fibroblast functionality and should be further studied as a method of promoting the formation of a stable soft tissue biologic seal around percutaneous sites

Large-scale Point Cloud Registration Based on Graph Matching Optimization

Point Clouds Registration is a fundamental and challenging problem in 3D computer vision. It has been shown that the isometric transformation is an essential property in rigid point cloud registration, but the existing methods only utilize it in the outlier rejection stage. In this paper, we emphasize that the isometric transformation is also important in the feature learning stage for improving registration quality. We propose a \underline{G}raph \underline{M}atching \underline{O}ptimization based \underline{Net}work (denoted as GMONet for short), which utilizes the graph matching method to explicitly exert the isometry preserving constraints in the point feature learning stage to improve %refine the point representation. Specifically, we %use exploit the partial graph matching constraint to enhance the overlap region detection abilities of super points (i.e.,i.e., down-sampled key points) and full graph matching to refine the registration accuracy at the fine-level overlap region. Meanwhile, we leverage the mini-batch sampling to improve the efficiency of the full graph matching optimization. Given high discriminative point features in the evaluation stage, we utilize the RANSAC approach to estimate the transformation between the scanned pairs. The proposed method has been evaluated on the 3DMatch/3DLoMatch benchmarks and the KITTI benchmark. The experimental results show that our method achieves competitive performance compared with the existing state-of-the-art baselines

Will the Three Gorges Dam affect the underwater light climate of Vallisneria spiralis L. and food habitat of Siberian crane in Poyang Lake?

Almost 95% of the entire population of the Siberian crane (Grus leucogeranus) winter in Poyang Lake, China, where they forage on the tubers of the submerged aquatic macrophyte Vallisneria spiralis. The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River may possibly affect this food source of the Siberian crane by affecting the light intensity reaching the top of the V. spiralis canopy. In this study, the photosynthetically active radiation at the top of the V. spiralis canopy (PARtc) in Lake Dahuchi was modeled from 1998 to 2006, and the potential impacts of changes in water level and turbidity on the underwater light climate of V. spiralis were analyzed. PARtc was calculated from incident irradiance while the losses due to reflection at the water surface, absorption, and scattering within the water column were taken into consideration. The results indicated significant differences in PARtc between years. Six years of water level and Secchi disk depth records revealed a seasonal switching of the lake from a turbid state at low water levels in autumn, winter, and spring to a clear state at high water levels during the monsoon in summer. The highest PARtc occurred at intermediate water levels, which were reached when the Yangtze River forces Lake Dahuchi out of its turbid state in early summer and the water becomes clear. The intended operation of the Three Gorges Dam, which will increase water levels in May and June, may advance the moment when Lake Dahuchi switches from turbid to clear. We suggest that this might increase production of V. spiralis and possibly improve the food habitat conditions for wintering Siberian crane in Poyang Lake

An approach to predict lower-order dynamic behaviors of a 5-DOF hybrid robot using a minimum set of generalized coordinates

    Get PDF
This paper presents an effective semi-analytical approach for predicting lower-order dynamics of a five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) hybrid robot named TriMule, which is composed of a 3-DOF parallel mechanism plus a 2-DOF A/C wrist. In this method, the governing equations of motion of limbs within the parallel mechanism are first formulated by finite element analysis (FEA) and then reduced to super-element models. This is followed by exploiting a general stiffness model of multiple DOF joints connecting the super-elements. These two threads lead to the reduced dynamic model of the parallel mechanism while keeping the full set of lower-order modes retained. Finally, the dynamic model of entire system is established by merging the models of parallel mechanism and wrist. The computational results show that the lower-order natural frequencies, mode shapes of the entire system, and the frequency response functions (FRFs) of the robot tool center point (TCP) estimated by the proposed approach have very good agreement with those obtained by a full order FE model and experimental modal tests. The merits of this approach lie in that the established model allows the full set of lower-order dynamics of the entire system to be predicted effectively and accurately by only using fourteen generalized coordinates
