Comparison between simulation and experimental result of the scale down vertical concrete cask under the historical earthquake hit
In recent years, the final disposal facility for the long-term storage of high radioactive waste is an important issue and an urgent task for nuclear Industry. This study is focus on the understanding the procedure of dry storage system in a nuclear power plant. The dry storage system is known as transportable storage canister (TSC) packing by using spent fuel placed in vertical concrete cask (VCC) or VCC with add-on-shell (AOS) canister and then those conveyed VCC or AOS will be put on the concrete pad. A numerical simulation for evaluation the behavior of VCC and AOC under the earthquake hits is used the finite element model by LS-DYNA and the real seismic behavior is obtained using shaking table test. Test results indicate that the simulation by numerical model can slightly simulate the dynamic records by shaking table test. This is because that the behavior of shaking table test is the rocking motion but the numerical model is the sliding motion. The surface roughness between the cask and concrete pad is an important variable and it needs more numerical simulation to solve the interface and friction coefficient between the cask and concrete pad
In-plane Hall effect in rutile oxide films induced by the Lorentz force
The conventional Hall effect is linearly proportional to the field component
or magnetization component perpendicular to a film. Despite the increasing
theoretical proposals on the Hall effect to the in-plane field or magnetization
in various special systems induced by the Berry curvature, such an
unconventional Hall effect has only been experimentally reported in Weyl
semimetals and in a heterodimensional superlattice. Here, we report an
unambiguous experimental observation of the in-plane Hall effect (IPHE) in
centrosymmetric rutile RuO2 and IrO2 single-crystal films under an in-plane
magnetic field. The measured Hall resistivity is found to be proportional to
the component of the applied in-plane magnetic field along a particular crystal
axis and to be independent of the current direction or temperature. Both the
experimental observations and theoretical calculations confirm that the IPHE in
rutile oxide films is induced by the Lorentz force. Our findings can be
generalized to ferromagnetic materials for the discovery of in-plane anomalous
Hall effects and quantum anomalous Hall effects. In addition to significantly
expanding knowledge of the Hall effect, this work opens the door to explore new
members in the Hall effect family
Demethoxycurcumin Retards Cell Growth and Induces Apoptosis in Human Brain Malignant Glioma GBM 8401 Cells
Demethoxycurcumin (DMC; a curcumin-related demethoxy compound) has been recently shown to display antioxidant and antitumor activities. It has also produced a potent chemopreventive action against cancer. In the present study, the antiproliferation (using the MTT assay, DMC was found to have cytotoxic activities against GBM 8401 cell with IC50 values at 22.71 μM) and induced apoptosis effects of DMC have been investigated in human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells. We have studied the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), DNA fragmentation, caspase activation, and NF-κB transcriptional factor activity. By these approaches, our results indicated that DMC has produced an inhibition of cell proliferation as well as the activation of apoptosis in GBM 8401 cells. Both effects were observed to increase in proportion with the dosage of DMC treatment, and the apoptosis was induced by DMC in human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells via mitochondria- and caspase-dependent pathways
Unraveling the Rich Fragmentation Dynamics Associated with S-H Bond Fission Following Photoexcitation of H <sub>2</sub>S at Wavelengths ∼129.1 nm
H2S is being detected in the atmospheres of ever more interstellar bodies, and photolysis is an important mechanism by which it is processed. Here, we report H Rydberg atom time-of-flight measurements following the excitation of H2S molecules to selected rotational (JKaKc′) levels of the 1B1 Rydberg state associated with the strong absorption feature at wavelengths of λ ∼ 129.1 nm. Analysis of the total kinetic energy release spectra derived from these data reveals that all levels predissociate to yield H atoms in conjunction with both SH(A) and SH(X) partners and that the primary SH(A)/SH(X) product branching ratio increases steeply with ⟨Jb2⟩, the square of the rotational angular momentum about the b-inertial axis in the excited state. These products arise via competing homogeneous (vibronic) and heterogeneous (Coriolis-induced) predissociation pathways that involve coupling to dissociative potential energy surfaces (PES(s)) of, respectively, 1A″ and 1A′ symmetries. The present data also show H + SH(A) product formation when exciting the JKaKc′ = 000 and 111 levels, for which ⟨Jb2⟩ = 0 and Coriolis coupling to the 1A′ PES(s) is symmetry forbidden, implying the operation of another, hitherto unrecognized, route to forming H + SH(A) products following excitation of H2S at energies above ∼9 eV. These data can be expected to stimulate future ab initio molecular dynamic studies that test, refine, and define the currently inferred predissociation pathways available to photoexcited H2S molecules
Dynamic relationships between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance over 20 years of adulthood
Background. Bidirectional longitudinal relationships between depression and diabetes have been observed, but the dominant direction of their temporal relationships remains controversial.
Methods. The random-intercept cross-lagged panel model decomposes observed variables into a latent intercept representing the traits, and occasion-specific latent ‘state’ variables. This permits correlations to be assessed between the traits, while longitudinal ‘cross-lagged’ associations and cross-sectional correlations can be assessed between occasion-specific latent variables. We examined dynamic relationships between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance across five visits over 20 years of adulthood in the population-based Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Possible differences based on population group (Black v. White participants), sex and years of education were tested. Depressive symptoms and insulin resistance were quantified using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale and the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), respectively.
Results. Among 4044 participants (baseline mean age 34.9 ± 3.7 years, 53% women, 51% Black participants), HOMA-IR and CES-D traits were weakly correlated (r = 0.081, p = 0.002). Some occasion-specific correlations, but no cross-lagged associations were observed overall. Longitudinal dynamics of these relationships differed by population groups such that HOMAIR at age 50 was associated with CES-D score at age 55 (β = 0.076, p = 0.038) in White participants only. Longitudinal dynamics were consistent between sexes and based on education.
Conclusions. The relationship between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance was best characterized by weak correlations between occasion-specific states and enduring traits, with weak evidence that insulin resistance might be temporally associated with subsequent depressive symptoms among White participants later in adulthood.publishedVersio

β-Lapachone induces heart morphogenetic and functional defects by promoting the death of erythrocytes and the endocardium in zebrafish embryos
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>β-Lapachone has antitumor and wound healing-promoting activities. To address the potential influences of various chemicals on heart development of zebrafish embryos, we previously treated zebrafish embryos with chemicals from a Sigma LOPAC1280™ library and found several chemicals including β-lapachone that affected heart morphogenesis. In this study, we further evaluated the effects of β-lapachone on zebrafish embryonic heart development.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Embryos were treated with β-lapachone or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 24 or 48 hours post fertilization (hpf) for 4 h at 28°C. Heart looping and valve development was analyzed by whole-mount <it>in situ </it>hybridization and histological analysis. For fractional shortening and wall shear stress analyses, AB and Tg (<it>gata1</it>:<it>DsRed</it>) embryos were recorded for their heart pumping and blood cell circulations via time-lapse fluorescence microscopy. Dextran rhodamine dye injection into the tail reticular cells was used to analyze circulation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was analyzed by incubating embryos in 5-(and 6-)-chloromethyl-2',7'-dichloro-dihydrofluorescein diacetate (CM-H<sub>2</sub>DCFDA) and recorded using fluorescence microscopy. <it>o</it>-Dianisidine (ODA) staining and whole mount <it>in situ </it>hybridization were used to analyze erythrocytes. TUNEL assay was used to examine DNA fragmentation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We observed a linear arrangement of the ventricle and atrium, bradycardia arrhythmia, reduced fractional shortening, circulation with a few or no erythrocytes, and pericardial edema in β-lapachone-treated 52-hpf embryos. Abnormal expression patterns of <it>cmlc2</it>, <it>nppa</it>, <it>BMP4</it>, <it>versican</it>, and <it>nfatc1</it>, and histological analyses showed defects in heart-looping and valve development of β-lapachone-treated embryos. ROS production was observed in erythrocytes and DNA fragmentation was detected in both erythrocytes and endocardium of β-lapachone-treated embryos. Reduction in wall shear stress was uncovered in β-lapachone-treated embryos. Co-treatment with the NQO1 inhibitor, dicoumarol, or the calcium chelator, BAPTA-AM, rescued the erythrocyte-deficiency in circulation and heart-looping defect phenotypes in β-lapachone-treated embryos. These results suggest that the induction of apoptosis of endocardium and erythrocytes by β-lapachone is mediated through an NQO1- and calcium-dependent pathway.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The novel finding of this study is that β-lapachone affects heart morphogenesis and function through the induction of apoptosis of endocardium and erythrocytes. In addition, this study further demonstrates the importance of endocardium and hemodynamic forces on heart morphogenesis and contractile performance.</p
State, trait, and accumulated features of the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog) in mild Alzheimer's disease
Background
The Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog) is used to assess decline in memory, language, and praxis in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods
A latent state–trait model with autoregressive effects was used to determine how much of the ADAS-Cog item measurement was reliable, and of that, how much of the information was occasion specific (state) versus consistent (trait or accumulated from one visit to the next).
Results
Participants with mild AD (n = 341) were assessed four times over 24 months. Praxis items were generally unreliable as were some memory items. Language items were generally the most reliable, and this increased over time. Only two ADAS-Cog items showed reliability >0.70 at all four assessments, word recall (memory) and naming (language). Of the reliable information, language items exhibited greater consistency (63.4% to 88.2%) than occasion specificity, and of the consistent information, language items tended to reflect effects of AD progression that accumulated from one visit to the next (35.5% to 45.3%). In contrast, reliable information from praxis items tended to come from trait information. The reliable information in the memory items reflected more consistent than occasion-specific information, but they varied between items in the relative amounts of trait versus accumulated effects.
Conclusions
Although the ADAS-Cog was designed to track cognitive decline, most items were unreliable, and each item captured different amounts of information related to occasion-specific, trait, and accumulated effects of AD over time. These latent properties complicate the interpretation of trends seen in ordinary statistical analyses of trials and other clinical studies with repeated ADAS-Cog item measures
