Mid- and far-infrared polarimetric studies of the core of OMC-1: the inner field configuration

    Get PDF
We present imaging polarimetry of the central 30 arcsec of OMC-1 at 12.5 and 17 μm with arcsecond resolution, together with complementary spectropolarimetry in the ranges 8–13 and 16–22 μ ;m at selected positions, and polarimetry at 800 μm over an approximately 1-arcmin field. The polarization is due to the dichroism of aligned grains in emission in the farinfrared, and predominantly due to absorption in the mid-infrared. The images reveal large variations of polarization fraction and position angle in BNKL, the central region, and these can explain the low fractional polarization observed when this region is unresolved, as in the far-infrared. The mid-infrared polarization indicates that a substantial component of magnetic field is aligned with the plane of the disc-like structures inferred from millimetre-wave studies, and suggests the presence of a toroidal field within the disc

A simple piston problem in one dimension

We study a heavy piston that separates finitely many ideal gas particles moving inside a one-dimensional gas chamber. Using averaging techniques, we prove precise rates of convergence of the actual motions of the piston to its averaged behavior. The convergence is uniform over all initial conditions in a compact set. The results extend earlier work by Sinai and Neishtadt, who determined that the averaged behavior is periodic oscillation. In addition, we investigate the piston system when the particle interactions have been smoothed. The convergence to the averaged behavior again takes place uniformly, both over initial conditions and over the amount of smoothing.Comment: Accepted by Nonlinearity. 27 pages, 2 figure

A retrosynthetic co-templating method for the preparation of silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieves

This work has been supported by Johnson Matthey PLC, UK. Solid-state NMR spectra were obtained at the EPSRC UK National Solid-state NMR Service at Durham.A retrosynthetic method has been developed to design the synthesis of target zeotypes whose frameworks belong to the ABC-6 structural family and which contain gme cages. This permits the preparation of silicoaluminophosphate versions of AFX (SAPO-56), SFW (STA- 18) and GME (STA-19) topology types. The method makes simultaneous use of two organic structure directing agents (SDAs) to promote the formation of structural features such as cages or channels of the target framework. Computational modelling was used to identify SDAs for gme and other cages or channels in the target structures. The trimethylammonium cation was found to be the most favourable SDA for the gme cage while bisdiazabicyclooctane (DABCO) alkane cations and quaternary ammonium oligomers of DABCO with connecting polymethylene chain lengths of 4 to 8 methylene units acted as 1 templates for the additional cages or channels, respectively. The incorporation of each of the co-SDAs in the as-prepared materials was confirmed by chemical analysis, 13C MAS NMR and Rietveld refinement combined with computational modeling. Calcination of the SAPO- 56, STA-18 and some of the STA-19 materials gives microporous, fully tetrahedrally- coordinated framework solids with AFX, SFW and GME topologies: other STA-19 samples convert topotactically to SAPO-5. These results show that SAPOs in the ABC-6 family can be prepared via a targeted co-templating approach.PostprintPostprintPeer reviewe

Relaxation to thermal equilibrium in the self-gravitating sheet model

We revisit the issue of relaxation to thermal equilibrium in the so-called "sheet model", i.e., particles in one dimension interacting by attractive forces independent of their separation. We show that this relaxation may be very clearly detected and characterized by following the evolution of order parameters defined by appropriately normalized moments of the phase space distribution which probe its entanglement in space and velocity coordinates. For a class of quasi-stationary states which result from the violent relaxation of rectangular waterbag initial conditions, characterized by their virial ratio R_0, we show that relaxation occurs on a time scale which (i) scales approximately linearly in the particle number N, and (ii) shows also a strong dependence on R_0, with quasi-stationary states from colder initial conditions relaxing much more rapidly. The temporal evolution of the order parameter may be well described by a stretched exponential function. We study finally the correlation of the relaxation times with the amplitude of fluctuations in the relaxing quasi-stationary states, as well as the relation between temporal and ensemble averages.Comment: 37 pages, 24 figures; some additional discussion of previous literature and other minor modifications, final published versio

    Quantum Candies and Quantum Cryptography

The field of quantum information is becoming more known to the general public. However, effectively demonstrating the concepts underneath quantum science and technology to the general public can be a challenging job. We investigate, extend, and much expand here "quantum candies" (invented by Jacobs), a pedagogical model for intuitively describing some basic concepts in quantum information, including quantum bits, complementarity, the no-cloning principle, and entanglement. Following Jacob's quantum candies description of the well known quantum key distribution protocol BB84, we explicitly demonstrate various additional quantum cryptography protocols using quantum candies in an approachable manner. The model we investigate can be a valuable tool for science and engineering educators who would like to help the general public to gain more insights about quantum science and technology: most parts of this paper, including many protocols for quantum cryptography, are expected to be easily understandable by a layperson without any previous knowledge of mathematics, physics, or cryptography.Comment: To be presented at the 9th International Conference on the Theory and Practice of Natural Computing (TPNC 2020; postponed and merged with TPNC 2021). The Management of Talar Osteochondral Lesions - Current Concepts

    Get PDF
Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) are a common complication following trauma, involving both the articular cartilage and the underlying subchondral bone, with variable aetiologies and often presenting with non-specific symptoms. Diagnosis of OLTs requires a combination of clinical assessment and imaging and despite many different treatment options, there is no generalised consensus regarding which option is the most effective. Left untreated, OLTs risk progressing to osteoarthritis. Acute non-displaced OLTs can be treated non-operatively. However, OLTs refractory to non-surgical care for three to six months may be suitable for surgical care. In these cases, conservative treatments are often unsuccessful, particularly for larger and more severe defects and so the majority require surgical intervention. Although bone marrow stimulation techniques remain the “gold standard” for lesions <150 mm2, there still requires a need for better long term clinical data and cost-benefit analyses compared with other treatment options. Biological attempts at either regenerating or replacing the articular cartilage are however demonstrating some promising results, but each with their own advantages and disadvantages. In this review, we summarise the clinical management of OLTs and present the current concepts of different treatment regimes

Allozyme differentiation of two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888 (Teleostei, Loricariidae) from the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil

    Get PDF
Allozyme electrophoresis was used to examine 12 enzymatic systems in two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus from the Paraná River basin. Samples of Neoplecostomus sp. 1 were collected in Paraitinguinha stream of the Tietê River basin, in the municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo State, and those of Neoplecostomus sp. 2 from São Domingos stream of the Rio Grande River basin, in the municipality of Muzambinho, Minas Gerais State. The genetic variability of the two populations was estimated by Nei’s expected heterozygosity and was considered lower than average for populations of freshwater fish. The proportion of polymorphic loci was low (only 5.26% for the locus Idh). The low frequency of heterozygosity for both populations revealed a high fixation of alleles for each locus. Homozygote excess was observed in both populations. The values of Nei’s genetic identity and the presence of loci with different allele frequencies in both populations may imply that the two populations belong to different species. The genetic variability between populations was compared to other data for loricariids

Monte Carlo simulation of virtual Compton scattering below pion threshold

    Get PDF
This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulation developed specifically for the VCS experiments below pion threshold that have been performed at MAMI and JLab. This simulation generates events according to the (Bethe-Heitler + Born) cross section behaviour and takes into account all relevant resolution-deteriorating effects. It determines the `effective' solid angle for the various experimental settings which are used for the precise determination of photon electroproduction absolute cross section.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, A One author adde
