The conquest of Bali and its incorporation in the colonial empire of the Dutch East Indies at the beginning of the twentieth century, and its inclusion in the modern independent nation of Indonesian in 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War have given rise to a self-consciousness amongst Balinese about their identity as Balinese (kebalian). The author argues that concerns about what it is to be Balinese have called upon Balinese not just to be Balinese but also to be worthy representat..

Jennifer Goodlander, Women in the shadows: Gender, puppets and the power of tradition in Bali

The Balinese wayang kulit, the author informs her readers, is both social event and sacred ritual. Jennifer Goodlander’s book is an account of her experience, as a woman and foreigner, learning to perform the Balinese shadow theatre. In it she describes how, under the experienced eye of her teacher, the dalang I Wayan Tunjung, she acquired the multiple skills which a dalang must possess, as playwright, storyteller, actor, comedian, director, singer, as musician and conductor of music, produce..

Evidence of Neoglacial Solifluction at Okstindan, North Norway

A section excavated through two adjacent turf-banked solifluction lobes has revealed buried soils beneath each solifluction sheet. Five radiocarbon dates are reported from the buried soils and these reveal evidence of soil movement which probably extends over nearly 3,000 years until the present. The initiation of the movement appears to be linked to the late Sub-Boreal climatic deterioration and Neoglacial glacier expansion which induced the development of a late-lying snow patch at the study site. The first period of movement appears to have been faster than that during the later phase. It is suggested that this reduced rate is associated with a decrease in slope angle and to increased distance from the late-lying snow bank at the head of the slope, rather than to a less severe climatic environment

The rhetoric of paintings; the Balinese "Malat" and the prospect of a history of Balinese ideas, imaginings and emotions

Balinese paintings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shed light on how painters and their works speak to their viewers both about how Balinese in this period knew, imagined, thought, and felt about the world in which they lived, and about the visual representation and communication of these ideas, imaginings, and feelings through the medium of narrative paintings. In this paper I discuss five Balinese paintings of the Malat. The first two illustrate the episode in which Raden Misa Prabangsa stabs Raden Ino Nusapati’s horse. The third and fourth paintings illustrate Prabu Melayu’s rescue of his sister Princess Rangkesari of Daha from the court of the King of Lasem, and the fifth, the reuniting of Princess Rangkesari with her parents, the King and Queen of Daha. However, before I consider the paintings, I discuss briefly a number of historiographical issues concerning the reception of ideas, imaginings, andfeelings conveyed in these five narrative paintings of the Malat and which need to be kept in mind when assessing interpretations of them.</div

Patient perceptions and understanding of pressure ulcer risk in the community: Empirical Research Qualitative

    Get PDF
Aims To explore patient perceptions and understanding of their pressure ulcer risk and how information is communicated between a nurse and patient in the home setting. Design A pragmatic qualitative research design including community-dwelling patients, who were deemed at risk of developing a pressure ulcer. Methods Observation of routine interactions between nurse and patient regarding their pressure ulcer risk and semi-structured interviews with 15 community patients following the nursing interaction. Results Four key overarching themes emerged from the data analysis that were related to patient perceptions and understanding of pressure ulcer risk. These included Pressure Ulcer Awareness, Importance of Repositioning, Healthy Eating and Risk Interpretation. Conclusion Patient perception and understanding of pressure ulcer risk is different from the scientific, professional view. Patient risk perception was based on heuristics and wider personal factors and social influences. Impact The study provides important new insights into clinical practice in relation to how pressure ulcer advice and information are provided and interpreted in the community setting. Reporting Method Adhered to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) Patient or Public Contribution A small selection of patients within the NHS Trust in which the research was conducted contributed to the design of the study, in particular some of the interview questions and timing

Desorption of carboxylates and phosphonates from galvanized steel: Towards greener lubricants

    Get PDF
This paper studies the removal of chemisorbed carboxylates and phosphonates from TiO2‐coated galvanized steel using NaOH(aq). XPS and FTIR data show that NaOH(aq) is effective at desorbing these species and so is an alternative to gas phase processes (eg, plasma cleaning). Tribological investigations show that NaOH(aq)‐treated surfaces show reduced friction and wear, relative to the “as‐received” galvanized steel. This is ascribed to carbonate (present as an impurity in NaOH) that adsorbs to the surface of the substrate during NaOH(aq) immersion. Carbonate removal through sonication in water generates surfaces that show friction similar to “as‐received” galvanized steel. This work is useful in areas (eg, automotive manufacturing), where the effective removal of lubricants following tribological contact is key to subsequent paint adhesion
