The purpose of this study is to offer data necessary for coaching skills and enhancing talent in players, by dividing roundhouse kicking according to pre-movement, and by calculating contribution of lower limb segments to final foot velocity

    Comparison of supercritical and near-critical carbon dioxide extraction of carotenoid enriched wheat bran oil

    Supercritical and near-critical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction were carried out to extract oil from wheat bran. The extraction temperatures for supercritical and near-critical CO2 were 35 - 45Ā°C and 25 - 30Ā°C, respectively. The applied pressure was ranging from 10 to 30 MPa for both supercritical and near-critical CO2 extraction. The extraction was performed in a semi batch process with a CO2 flow rate of 26.81 g/min for 1.5 h. The oil obtained from wheat bran at different extraction conditions was quantitatively measured toĀ  investigate the solubility of oil at supercritical and near-critical CO2. The highest solubility was found at near-critical condition. The fatty acid compositions of wheat bran oil were measured by gas chromatography (GC). Linoleic, palmitic, oleic and Ī³-linolenic acid were the major fatty acids of wheat bran oil. Total carotenoid was measured spectrophotometerically. Highest yield of total carotenoid was found at 45Ā°C and 30 MPa.Key words: Supercritical and near-critical carbon dioxide, wheat bran oil, total carotenoid

    Appropriateness of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in pediatric patients visiting the emergency department due to animal bite

    Purpose To study the appropriateness of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (rPEP) for children with animal bite who visited the emergency department (ED). Methods The study enrolled children younger than 18 years with animal bite who visited the National Medical Center ED between January 2014 and October 2017. The childrenā€™s electronic medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Data for analysis included age, sex, body parts bitten by animals, species of animals, regions where animal bites occurred, history of recent antibiotics therapy and tetanus vaccination, and justification by the 2017 Guidelines for Rabies Control in Korea and implementation of rPEP. In children who underwent unjustified rPEP or did not undergo justified one, we recorded their guardiansā€™ opinion for or against rPEP. Results Of the 63 enrolled children, rPEP was justified for 38 children by the Korean guidelines. Of the 38 children, 35 actually underwent rPEP. Among the remaining 3 children, 2 did not undergo the prophylaxis as per the guardiansā€™ requests. Among the 25 children whose rPEP was not justified, 8 underwent the prophylaxis. Of these 8 children, 7 did based on the guardiansā€™ requests. Conclusion In this study, inappropriate rPEP was usually affected by the guardiansā€™ requests, regardless of the criteria for such prophylaxis. Thus, their requests for or against rPEP should be discussed with emergency physicians who are aware of the relevant criteria to prevent occurrence of rabies or unnecessary use of medical resources

    Chemical Targeting of GAPDH Moonlighting Function in Cancer Cells Reveals Its Role in Tubulin Regulation

    SummaryGlycolytic enzymes are attractive anticancer targets. They also carry out numerous, nonglycolytic ā€œmoonlightingā€ functions in cells. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of the triazine small molecule, GAPDS, that targets the glycolytic enzymeĀ glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). GAPDS showed greater toxicity against cancer cells compared to a known GAPDH enzyme inhibitor. GAPDS also selectively inhibited cell migration and invasion. Our analysis showed that GAPDS treatment reduced GAPDH levels in the cytoplasm, which would modulate the secondary, moonlighting functions of this enzyme. We then used GAPDS as a probe to demonstrate that a moonlighting function of GAPDH is tubulin regulation, which may explain itsĀ anti-invasive properties. We also observed that GAPDS has potent anticancer activity inĀ vivo. Our study indicates that strategies to target the secondary functions of anticancer candidates may yield potent therapeutics and useful chemical probes

    A Korean patient with Guillain-BarrƩ syndrome following acute hepatitis E whose cholestasis resolved with steroid therapy

    Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging pathogen in developed countries, and several cases of acute HEV infection have been reported in South Korea. However, there have been no reports on HEV-associated Guillain-BarrƩ syndrome (GBS) in Korea. We recently experienced the case of a 58-year-old Korean male with acute HEV infection after ingesting raw deer meat. Persistent cholestasis was resolved by the administration of prednisolone. At 2.5 months after the clinical presentation of HEV infection, the patient developed weakness of the lower limbs, and was diagnosed with GBS associated with acute hepatitis E. To our knowledge, this is the second report on supportive steroid therapy for persistent cholestasis due to hepatitis E, and the first report of GBS in a Korean patient with acute HEV infection

    A Nanopore Structured High Performance Toluene Gas Sensor Made by Nanoimprinting Method

    Toluene gas was successfully measured at room temperature using a device microfabricated by a nanoimprinting method. A highly uniform nanoporous thin film was produced with a dense array of titania (TiO2) pores with a diameter of 70āˆ¼80 nm using this method. This thin film had a Pd/TiO2 nanoporous/SiO2/Si MIS layered structure with Pd-TiO2 as the catalytic sensing layer. The nanoimprinting method was useful in expanding the TiO2 surface area by about 30%, as confirmed using AFM and SEM imaging. The measured toluene concentrations ranged from 50 ppm to 200 ppm. The toluene was easily detected by changing the Pd/TiO2 interface work function, resulting in a change in the Iā€“V characteristics

    Overexpression of CIITA in T Cells Aggravates Th2-Mediated Colitis in Mice

    The MHC class II transactivator (CIITA) is the master transcriptional regulator of genes involved in MHC class II restricted antigen presentation. Previously we suggested another role of CIITA in Th1/Th2 balance by demonstrating that forced expression of CIITA in murine T cells repressed Th1 immunity both in vitro and in vivo. However, the results were contradictory to the report that CIITA functioned to suppress the production of Th2 cytokine by CD4+ T cells in CIITA deficient mice. In this study, we investigated the influence of constitutive expression of CIITA in T cells on Th2 immune response in vivo using murine experimental colitis model. In the dextran sodium sulfate-induced acute colitis, a disease involving innate immunity, CIITA transgenic mice and wild type control mice showed similar progression of the disease. However, the development of oxazolone-induced colitis, a colitis mediated by predominantly Th2 immune response, was aggravated in CIITA-transgenic mice. And, CD4+ T cells from the mesenteric lymph node of CIITA-transgenic mice treated with oxazolone exhibited a high level of IL-4 secretion. Together, these data demonstrate that constitutive expression of CIITA in T cells skews immune response to Th2, resulting in aggravation of Th2-mediated colitis in vivo

    A Degenerative Intraspinal Cyst Mimicking a Nerve Root: A Case Report on an Intraoperative Challenge

    Various intraspinal cysts have been described in the literature. Sometimes these cysts are difficult to recognize intraoperative and can place a surgeon in dilemma. We report a case of a degenerative intraspinal cyst with severe adhesion with dura, which was mimicking as a nerve root and posed a diagnostic dilemma during surgery. A Sixty-year-old man presented with insidious onset, gradually progressing lower back pain, right leg pain and neurological claudication of six months duration. The pain radiated to the right S1 dermatome. Right side straight leg raise test was positive at 45Ā°. Sensations were diminished over the right L5 and S1 dermatomes. Motor function was normal. MRI showed a large cystic lesion at right L5-S1 level. The cyst appeared to compress the dural sac and traversing right S1 root at L5-S1 level. The lesion was isointense on T1-weighted image and hyperintense on T2-weighted image. While treating this condition using the uniportal full endoscopic technique the cyst appeared as nerve root. Meticulous dissection was required to separate the cyst from neural structures. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of a degenerative intraspinal cyst. The patient had significant improvement after surgery and at six months follow up he was completely asymptomatic. Various cysts can occur in the intraspinal canal, and careful attention should be paid to minimize the nerve injury in the presence of severe adhesions
