Human resource management in India: strategy, performance and complementarity
This study seeks to explore which types of HR practice are associated with better organisational performance (OP). Whilst the core findingâthat specific HR practices lead to better organisational outcomes may not be surprisingâwe also found an absence of complementarity. Normally, the absence of complementarities would suggest limitations in institutional supports; on the one hand, however, institutional shortfalls are not unique to India and may be encountered in many emerging market settings. In contrast, the great internal diversity of the Indian setting, with strong variations recognised amongst institutions, along with enforcement capabilities, might suggest that these tendencies are particularly pronounced. We also found a strong link between the intrinsic rewards and performanceâan unexpected result in a low-income country, where wages are generally low. We suggest that this may reflect the nature of the labour market and the limited (and possibly proportionately shrinking) pool of good jobs, making exit a difficult option for all but the best qualified. Whilst this puts employees in a poor bargaining position in bidding-up pay (making pay rises seem unfeasible), the intrinsic attributes of the job become more important
X-Ray Eclipse Timing in the LMXB EXO0748-676
Orbital period changes are an important diagnostic for understanding low mass
X-ray binary (LMXB) accretion-induced angular momentum exchange and overall
system evolution. We present our most recent results for the eclipse timing of
the LMXB EXO0748-676. Since its discovery in 1985 it has apparently undergone
three distinct orbital period "epochs", each characterized by a different
orbital period than the previous epoch. We outline the orbital period behavior
for EXO0748-676 over the past 18 years and discuss the implications of this

Possible Magnetic Activity in the Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO 0748-676
We report evidence of magnetic activity associated with the secondary star in
the EXO 0748-676 low mass X-ray binary system. An analysis of a sequence of
five consecutive X-ray eclipses observed during December 2003 with the RXTE
satellite brings out a feature occurring during ingress we interpret as the
X-ray photoelectric absorption shadow, as seen by an observer at Earth, of a
plasma structure suspended above the surface of the secondary star. The light
curve feature consists of an initial drop in count rate to near zero (the
absorption shadow) with a very short rebound to a significant fraction of the
pre-ingress count rate and then a final plunge to totality over a total time
scale of ~25 s. The ingress feature persists for at least 5 consecutive orbital
periods (a total of ~19 hr), and possibly up to 5 days in our data. Our data
also show significant post-egress dipping during this eclipse sequence, unusual
for this source, indicating possible secondary star mass ejection during this

Mobility of Dislocations in Aluminum
The velocities of individual dislocations of edge and mixed types in pure aluminum single crystals were determined as a function of appliedâresolved shear stress and temperature. The dislocation velocities were determined from measurements of the displacements of individual dislocations produced by stress pulses of known duration. The BergâBarrett xâray technique was employed to observe the dislocations, and stress pulses of 15 to 108 ÎŒsec duration were applied by propagating torsional waves along the axes of [111]âoriented cylindrical crystals. Resolved shear stresses up to 16Ă10^6 dynesâcm^2 were applied at temperatures ranging from â150° to +70°C, and dislocation velocities were found to vary from 10 to 2800 cmâsec over these ranges of stress and temperature. The experimental conditions were such that the dislocation velocities were not significantly influenced by impurities, dislocation curvature, dislocationâdislocation interactions, or longârange internal stress fields in the crystals. The velocity of dislocations is found to be linearly proportional to the appliedâresolved shear stress, and to decrease with increasing temperature. Qualitative comparison of these results with existing theories leads to the conclusion that the mobility of individual dislocations in pure aluminum is governed by dislocationâphonon interactions. The phononâviscosity theory of dislocation mobility can be brought into agreement with the experimental results by reasonable choices of the values of certain constants appearing in the theory
Mobility of Edge Dislocations in the BasalâSlip System of Zinc
This paper presents the results of measurements of the velocities of ă1210ă (0001) edge dislocations in zinc as a function of applied shear stress. All tests were conducted at room temperature on 99.999% pure zinc monocrystals. Dislocations were revealed by means of the BergâBarrett xâray technique. Stress pulses of microsecond duration were applied to the test specimens by means of a torsion testing machine. Applied resolved shear stresses ranged from 0 to 17.2Ă10^6 dynâcm^2 and measured dislocation velocities ranged from 40â700 cmâsec. The results of this study indicate that the velocity of edge dislocations in the basal slip system of zinc is linearly proportional to the applied resolved shear stress. These results are analyzed in terms of the phonon drag theory. Agreement between this theory and the results reported here is quite good
A Strong X-Ray Burst from the Low Mass X-Ray Binary EXO0748-676
We have observed an unusually strong X-ray burst as a part of our regular
eclipse timing observations of the low mass binary system EXO0748-676. The
burst peak flux was 5.2x10^-8 ergs cm^-2 s^-1, approximately five times the
normal peak X-ray burst flux observed from this source by RXTE. Spectral fits
to the data strongly suggest that photospheric radius expansion occurred during
the burst. In this Letter we examine the properties of this X-ray burst, which
is the first example of a radius expansion burst from EXO0748-676 observed by
RXTE. We find no evidence for coherent burst oscillations. Assuming that the
peak burst luminosity is the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 solar mass neutron
star we derive a distance to EXO0748-676 of 7.7 kpc for a helium-dominated
burst photosphere and 5.9 kpc for a hydrogen-dominated burst photosphere.Comment: 15 pages including 2 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in

The asteroseismological potential of the pulsating DB white dwarf stars CBS 114 and PG 1456+103
We have acquired 65 h of single-site time-resolved CCD photometry of the
pulsating DB white dwarf star CBS 114 and 62 h of two-site high-speed CCD
photometry of another DBV, PG 1456+103. The pulsation spectrum of PG 1456+103
is complicated and variable on time scales of about one week and could only
partly be deciphered with our measurements. The modes of CBS 114 are more
stable in time and we were able to arrive at a frequency solution somewhat
affected by aliasing, but still satisfactory, involving seven independent modes
and two combination frequencies. These frequencies also explain the discovery
data of the star, taken 13 years earlier. We find a mean period spacing of 37.1
+/- 0.7 s significant at the 98% level between the independent modes of CBS 114
and argue that they are due to nonradial g-mode pulsations of spherical degree
l=1. We performed a global search for asteroseismological models of CBS 114
using a genetic algorithm, and we examined the susceptibility of the results to
the uncertainties of the observational frequency determinations and mode
identifications (we could not provide m values). The families of possible
solutions are identified correctly even without knowledge of m. Our optimal
model suggests Teff = 21,000 K and M_* = 0.730 M_sun as well as log(M_He/M_*) =
-6.66, X_O = 0.61. This measurement of the central oxygen mass fraction implies
a rate for the ^12C(alpha,gamma)^16O nuclear reaction near S_300=180 keV b,

STS-40 descent BET products: Development and results
Descent Best Estimate Trajectory (BET) Data were generated for the final Orbiter Experiments Flight, STS-40. This report discusses the actual development of these post-flight products: the inertial BET, the Extended BET, and the Aerodynamic BET. Summary results are also included. The inertial BET was determined based on processing Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRSS) coherent Doppler data in conjunction with observations from eleven C-band stations, to include data from the Kwajalein Atoll and the usual California coastal radars, as well as data from five cinetheodolite cameras in the vicinity of the runways at EAFB. The anchor epoch utilized for the trajectory reconstruction was 53,904 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) seconds which corresponds to an altitude at epoch of approximately 708 kft. Atmospheric data to enable development of an Extended BET for this mission were upsurped from the JSC operational post-flight BET. These data were evaluated based on Space Shuttle-derived considerations as well as model comparisons. The Aerodynamic BET includes configuration information, final mass properties, and both flight-determined and predicted aerodynamic performance estimates. The predicted data were based on the final pre-operational databook, updated to include flight determined incrementals based on an earlier ensemble of flights. Aerodynamic performance comparisons are presented and correlated versus statistical results based on twenty-two previous missions
