An account of cognitive flexibility and inflexibility for a complex dynamic task
Problem solving involves adapting known problem solving methods and strategies to the task at hand (Schunn & Reder, 2001) and cognitive flexibility is considered to be “the human ability to adapt the cognitive processing strategies to face new and unexpected conditions of the environment” (Cañas et al., 2005, p. 95). This work presents an ACT-R 6.0 model of complex problem solving behavior for the dynamic microworld game FireChief (Omodei & Wearing, 1995) that models the performance of participants predisposed to behave either more or less flexibly based on the nature of previous training on the task (Cañas et al., 2005). The model exhibits a greater or lesser degree of cognitive inflexibility in problem solving strategy choice reflecting variations in task training. The model provides an explanation of dynamic task performance compatible with the Competing Strategies paradigm (Taatgen et al., 2006) by creating a second layer of strategy competition that renders it more flexible with respect to strategy learning, and provides an explanation of cognitive inflexibility based on reward mechanism
The 1985 Chile earthquake: Structural characteristics and damage statistics for the building inventory in Vina del Mar
The Chile earthquake of 3 March 1985 resulted in an effective peak
acceleration of 0.36g in the coastal city of Vina del Mar. The city
had an inventory of over 400 reinforced concrete buildings ranging in
height from 5 to 23 stories. The observed behavior of the buildings is
interpreted in relation to the physical characteristics of the

A New Approach to Probabilistic Programming Inference
We introduce and demonstrate a new approach to inference in expressive
probabilistic programming languages based on particle Markov chain Monte Carlo.
Our approach is simple to implement and easy to parallelize. It applies to
Turing-complete probabilistic programming languages and supports accurate
inference in models that make use of complex control flow, including stochastic
recursion. It also includes primitives from Bayesian nonparametric statistics.
Our experiments show that this approach can be more efficient than previously

Examining Mobile Technology in Higher Education: Handheld Devices In and Out of the Classroom
This study followed an innovative introduction of mobile technology (i.e., BlackBerry® devices) to a graduate level business program and documented students’ use of the technology from the time students received the devices to the end of their first term of study. Students found the BlackBerry® device easy to use, and were optimistic regarding its potential role as an instructional tool. Students were self-directed in their use of the devices and found ways to use them within and outside of their classroom even when specific uses were not provided by instructors. Students used their devices most frequently for communication purposes outside the classroom through applications such as BlackBerry Messenger. Overall, although supporting a modest positive view toward this initial introduction to mobile technology as a learning tool, classroom instructional use was more limited than student-directed use in and outside the classroom. A comprehensive examination of the instructional pedagogy that best supports the potential of mobile technology as a self-directed learning tool is necessary to address the limitations seen in this implementation
Chemical abundance study of two strongly s-process enriched post-AGB stars in the LMC: J051213.81-693537.1 and J051848.86-700246.9
Context: This paper is part of a larger project in which we study the
chemical abundances of extra-galactic post-AGB stars with the ultimate goal of
improving our knowledge of the poorly understood AGB third dredge-up mixing
processes and s-process nucleosynthesis. Aims: In this paper, we study two
carefully selected post-AGB stars in the LMC. The combination of favourable
atmospheric parameters for detailed abundance studies and their known distances
make these objects ideal probes of the internal AGB third dredge-up and
s-process nucleosynthesis in that they provide observational constraints for
theoretical AGB models. Methods: We use high-resolution optical UVES spectra to
determine accurate stellar parameters and perform detailed elemental abundance
studies. Additionally, we use available photometric data to construct SEDs for
reddening and luminosity determinations. We then estimate initial masses from
theoretical post-AGB tracks. Results: Both stars show extreme s-process
enrichment associated with relatively low C/O ratios of about 1.3. We could
only derive upper limits of the lead (Pb) abundance which indicate no strong Pb
overabundances with respect to other s-elements. Comparison with theoretical
post-AGB evolutionary tracks in the HR-diagram reveals that both stars have low
initial masses between 1.0 and 1.5 Msun. Conclusion: This study adds to the
results obtained so far on a very limited number of s-process enriched post-AGB
stars in the Magellanic Clouds. We find an increasing discrepancy between
observed and predicted Pb abundances towards lower metallicities for all
studied Magellanic Cloud post-AGB stars found so far, as well as moderate C/O
ratios. We find that all s-process rich post-AGB stars in the LMC and SMC
studied so far, cluster in the same region of the HR-diagram and are associated
with low-mass stars with a low metallicity on average.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

Formulaic Sequences as Fluency Devices in the Oral Production of Native Speakers of Polish
In this paper we attempt to determine the nature and strength of the relationship between the use of formulaic sequences and productive fluency of native speakers of Polish. In particular, we seek to validate the claim that speech characterized by a higher incidence of formulaic sequences is produced more rapidly and with fewer hesitation phenomena. The analysis is based on monologic speeches delivered by 45 speakers of L1 Polish. The data include both the recordings and their transcriptions annotated for a number of objective fluency measures. In the first part of the study the total of formulaic sequences is established for each sample. This is followed by determining a set of temporal measures of the speakers’ output (speech rate, articulation rate, mean length of runs, mean length of pauses, phonation time ratio). The study provides some preliminary evidence of the fluency-enhancing role of formulaic language. Our results show that the use of formulaic sequences is positively and significantly correlated with speech rate, mean length of runs and phonation time ratio. This suggests that a higher concentration of formulaic material in output is associated with faster speed of speech, longer stretches of speech between pauses and an increased amount of time filled with speech
