Music information behaviors and system preferences of university students in Hong Kong
The Conference proceedings' website is located at http://www.terasoft.com.tw/conf/ismir2014/Proceedings.htmlThis paper presents a user study on music information needs and behaviors of university students in Hong Kong. A mix of quantitative and qualitative methods was used. A survey was completed by 101 participants and supplemental interviews were conducted in order to investigate users’ music information related activities. We found that university students in Hong Kong listened to music frequently and mainly for the purposes of entertainment, singing and playing instruments, and stress reduction. This user group often searches for music with multiple methods, but common access points like genre and time period were rarely used. Sharing music with people in their online social networks such as Facebook and Weibo was a common activity. Furthermore, the popularity of smartphones prompted the need for streaming music and mobile music applications. We also examined users’ preferences on music services available in Hong Kong such as YouTube and KKBox, as well as the characteristics liked and disliked by the users. The results not only offer insights into non-Western users’ music behaviors but also for designing online music services for young music listeners in Hong Kong. © Xiao Hu, Jin Ha Lee, Leanne Ka Yan Wong.published_or_final_versio

Isoflavones in treating watchful waiting benign prostate hyperplasia: a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the efficacy and safety of soy isoflavones in controlling the symptoms and signs of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). DESIGN: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study. SETTING: This trial was conducted at two hospitals in Hong Kong between May 2006 and September 2007. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and seventy-six (176) participants diagnosed with BPH were recruited from outpatient clinics. Participants with lower urinary tract symptoms were recruited through newspaper and radio interviews, posters placed at government outpatient clinics, and a public seminar offered by the investigators. INTERVENTIONS: Participants were randomly assigned to either intervention (40 mg of isoflavones daily from Soylife 40) or placebo groups in a double-blind fashion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome parameter of peak urine flow rate and the second outcome parameters of postresidual urine volume, lower urinary tract symptoms, testosterone, prostate-specific antigen, quality of life, diet, and safety profile (liver and renal function) were collected. All parameters were assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months in a 12-month study period except testosterone, prostate-specific antigen, and safety profile, which were assessed at baseline and at 12 months. RESULTS: The peak urine flow rate (Qmax), postresidual urine volume, International Prostate Symptoms Scores (IPSS), and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) significantly improved from baseline to the 12th month within both groups. However, when compared between groups, Qmax (p=0.055) and incomplete emptying subscore in IPSS (p=0.05) were marginally/statistically different between the two groups from the 6th to the 12th months, in addition to the general health domain of SF-36 from the baseline to 12th month (p=0.02) and from the 6th month to the 12th month (p=0.055). Isoflavones were generally safe and well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS: This randomized control pilot study showed only slight superiority of isoflavones over placebo over 12 months with otherwise surprising beneficial effects in both groups. Tolerability of isoflavones was excellent; thus it has laid foundations for further studies of isoflavones in BPH with focus on dosage and possible specificity of the effect.published_or_final_versio
Temporal trends in mode, site and stage of presentation with the introduction of colorectal cancer screening: a decade of experience from the West of Scotland
background: Population colorectal cancer screening programmes have been introduced to reduce cancer-specific mortality through the detection of early-stage disease. The present study aimed to examine the impact of screening introduction in the West of Scotland.
methods: Data on all patients with a diagnosis of colorectal cancer between January 2003 and December 2012 were extracted from a prospectively maintained regional audit database. Changes in mode, site and stage of presentation before, during and after screening introduction were examined.
results: In a population of 2.4 million, over a 10-year period, 14 487 incident cases of colorectal cancer were noted. Of these, 7827 (54%) were males and 7727 (53%) were socioeconomically deprived. In the postscreening era, 18% were diagnosed via the screening programme. There was a reduction in both emergency presentation (20% prescreening vs 13% postscreening, P0.001) and the proportion of rectal cancers (34% prescreening vs 31% pos-screening, P0.001) over the timeframe. Within non-metastatic disease, an increase in the proportion of stage I tumours at diagnosis was noted (17% prescreening vs 28% postscreening, P0.001).
conclusions: Within non-metastatic disease, a shift towards earlier stage at diagnosis has accompanied the introduction of a national screening programme. Such a change should lead to improved outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer
Ensemble Sales Forecasting Study in Semiconductor Industry
Sales forecasting plays a prominent role in business planning and business
strategy. The value and importance of advance information is a cornerstone of
planning activity, and a well-set forecast goal can guide sale-force more
efficiently. In this paper CPU sales forecasting of Intel Corporation, a
multinational semiconductor industry, was considered. Past sale, future
booking, exchange rates, Gross domestic product (GDP) forecasting, seasonality
and other indicators were innovatively incorporated into the quantitative
modeling. Benefit from the recent advances in computation power and software
development, millions of models built upon multiple regressions, time series
analysis, random forest and boosting tree were executed in parallel. The models
with smaller validation errors were selected to form the ensemble model. To
better capture the distinct characteristics, forecasting models were
implemented at lead time and lines of business level. The moving windows
validation process automatically selected the models which closely represent
current market condition. The weekly cadence forecasting schema allowed the
model to response effectively to market fluctuation. Generic variable
importance analysis was also developed to increase the model interpretability.
Rather than assuming fixed distribution, this non-parametric permutation
variable importance analysis provided a general framework across methods to
evaluate the variable importance. This variable importance framework can
further extend to classification problem by modifying the mean absolute
percentage error(MAPE) into misclassify error. Please find the demo code at :

Association between methylphenidate treatment and risk of seizure: A population-based self-controlled case series study
Background:
Individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of seizures. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate are the most commonly prescribed treatment for ADHD, but the association between their therapeutic use and the risk of seizures is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between methylphenidate treatment and the risk of seizure.
Methods:
For this population-based observational study, we used the electronic medical record database of the Hong Kong Clinical Data Analysis And Reporting System to identify individuals aged 6–25 years who received at least one methylphenidate prescription during the study period. Individuals with records of seizure or epilepsy before the study period were excluded. Individuals treated with methylphenidate who had seizures during the study period were included in the subsequent analyses, and a self-controlled case-series design was used to control for time-invariant individual characteristics. We did additional analyses using skin infection as a negative control outcome. We compared relative incidence of seizure during periods when individuals were exposed to methylphenidate with that during non-exposed periods.
Findings:
Of 29 604 individuals prescribed methylphenidate between Jan 1, 2001, and Dec 31, 2017, 269 (199 males and 70 females) had incident seizures. The mean age at baseline was 6·66 years (SD 2·01) and the median age at the incident seizure was 9·69 years (IQR 7·62–12·99). The overall incidence of seizure during methylphenidate treatment was 4·4 per 10 000 patient-years. We detected an increased risk of seizure during the first 30 days of methylphenidate treatment compared with that during non-exposed periods, with an incidence rate ratio of 4·01 (95% CI 2·09–7·68). No increase in risk was identified during the following 31–180 days of treatment (1·13, 0·56–2·25) or during subsequent treatment (1·38, 0·92–2·07). We did not identify an increased risk in any risk window for the negative control outcome analysis. No individuals died because of a seizure during the study period.
Interpretation:
The incidence of seizures was higher in the period immediately after the start of methylphenidate treatment than in the non-exposed period. No increased risk was observed during continuation of methylphenidate treatment. The association between methylphenidate treatment and seizures immediately after initiation of medication can be seen as a potential safety signal. Monitoring of neurological outcomes in individuals with ADHD is recommended when they first start methylphenidate treatment.

Quantification of carbon particulates produced under open liquid pool and prevaporised flame conditions: Waste cooking oil biodiesel and diesel blends
The soot volume fraction (SVF) of waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel and blends was quantified and compared under the same total carbon flow rate via two experimental setups, namely prevaporised diffusion jet flames and pool flames using extinction calibrated laser induced-incandescence (LII). The spatial SVF distribution shows that for diesel-rich fuels, soot formation peaks near the flame and is convected downstream, whereas biodiesel flames show a more evenly distributed SVF at the flame center region. An increase in biodiesel fraction in diesel results in a reduced propensity for soot, as evident in both pool and vapour flames. Comparison of the radial profiles of SVF along the centerline shows broader SVF profiles for pool flames, reflecting the longer residence times for soot diffusion and growth compared to vapour flames, which reflected the lower mass flux for the pool burner. The total soot produced from pool flames was found to be higher than vapour flame by a factor of two for the same fuel mass consumption rate. WCO biodiesel exhibited the lowest total SVF value regardless of flame type owing to the combined effects of lack of aromatic compounds and fuel chemistry. The soot primary particle sizes produced by WCO biodiesel show lower mean diameter values by a factor of approximately 1.5 compared to diesel-produced soot. The pool flames produced carbon particulates of larger mean diameter by around 22% and 8% for diesel and WCO biodiesel, respectively, relative to the counterpart vapour flames, as a result of extended soot surface growth period.Royal Society-Newton Advanced Fellow (NA160115)
