Understanding language teacher's culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy and its enhancement through learning study with young Chinese language learners

Paper Session - SIG L1 Teacher EducationBACKGROUND: Chinese language learners (CLLs) in Hong Kong mainly came from ethnic minorities (EMs) of South Asia. To preclude marginalization, education for EMs became a controversial issue. Frontline Chinese language teachers often encounter difficulties in teaching due to inadequate training. Though teachers play an important role in young CLL’s learning of ...postprin

Extensions of the External Validation for Checking Learned Model Interpretability and Generalizability.

We discuss the validation of machine learning models, which is standard practice in determining model efficacy and generalizability. We argue that internal validation approaches, such as cross-validation and bootstrap, cannot guarantee the quality of a machine learning model due to potentially biased training data and the complexity of the validation procedure itself. For better evaluating the generalization ability of a learned model, we suggest leveraging on external data sources from elsewhere as validation datasets, namely external validation. Due to the lack of research attractions on external validation, especially a well-structured and comprehensive study, we discuss the necessity for external validation and propose two extensions of the external validation approach that may help reveal the true domain-relevant model from a candidate set. Moreover, we also suggest a procedure to check whether a set of validation datasets is valid and introduce statistical reference points for detecting external data problems

Which Agenda? Medium of Instruction Policy in Post-1997 Hong Kong

    Get PDF
The mandatory use of mother tongue education in Hong Kong after 1997 met strong objections from the local community. While the government put forward a comprehensive educational agenda to justify the implementation of the policy, this paper raises the question of whether the change in language policy was mainly driven by an educational agenda, or whether there were other underlying agendas. To address the question, the history of the medium of instruction in Hong Kong is reviewed, and the experience of three decolonised Asian countries, Malaysia, Singapore and India, is discussed. The paper suggests that the political agenda has always played an important role in language policy formulation and implementation. In view of the important role that language plays in nation building and social reconstruction, it is inevitable that Chinese medium instruction will become more and more important. How the government will balance the need to strengthen the national identity of Hong Kong people and the need to maintain the international out look and economic development of Hong Kong will have a major impact on there view of the new medium of instruction policy in 2001.published_or_final_versio

Simultaneous spectral domain OCT and fundus autofluorescence imaging of the macula and microperimetric correspondence after successful repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

Background/aims: To evaluate the ultrastructural changes in the macula after successful repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) using simultaneous spectral domain optical coherence tomography (sdOCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging and to perform functional correlations with microperimetry. Methods: Simultaneous sdOCT and FAF imaging were performed using a combined sdOCT-confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) system. Microperimetry was performed in a subgroup of these patients. Results: 17 patients with macular-on RRD and 20 with macular-off RRD were recruited. sdOCT images revealed disruption of the external limiting membrane, inner segment/outer segment junction or the Verhoeff membrane in 16 eyes (43.2%). The presence of any or more of these disruptions was significantly associated with a poor postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (p<0.001). Patients with abnormal FAF were also associated with poor postoperative BCVA (p<0.001). However, there was a generally poor correspondence between the localisation of ultrastructural abnormalities as detected by sdOCT and FAF changes. Areas of decreased microperimetric sensitivity corresponded well with the ultrastructural changes and abnormal FAF. Conclusions: FAF changes may lag behind ultrastructural changes in the OCT, some of which may reverse with the passage of time. The present study demonstrates the ultrastructural changes assessed with simultaneous FAF and sdOCT and their relation with visual outcome.published_or_final_versio

Development of a Chinese version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (CHI-VFQ-25) as a tool to study patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong

Background: To develop a Chinese version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (CHI-VFQ-25) and to test its reliability and validity in a group of patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong. Methods: The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) was translated into Chinese. Patients were recruited from Hong Kong, and their demographic data and visual acuity were documented. Psychometric properties of the CHI-VFQ-25, including internal consistency, test-retest reliability, item-scale correlations and construct validity were tested. Results: 250 patients were recruited. The mean age of the patients was 66.04 (SD 14.00). 46% of them were male. The non-response rate and the floor and ceiling numbers of the CHI-VFQ-25 were calculated. The internal consistency was high in most subscales (except the general health and driving subscales), with Cronbach α ranging from 0.72-0.90. The test-retest reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.90). Patients with worse visual acuity had significantly lower scores on the CHI-VFQ-25 supporting construct validity. Conclusion: The CHI-VFQ-25 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the visual functions of Chinese patients with eye diseases in Hong Kong. Some questions had high non-response rates and should be substituted by the available alternatives.published_or_final_versio

Modeling of the current density distribution under surface posterior-tibial-nerve electric stimulator

    Get PDF
Stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve is commonly used in the measurement of somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). To improve the efficiency of stimulation, the potential field and current density distributions under the surface electrodes were modeled and simulated. In our model, three layers were assumed: (1) the air environment, (2) electrode and paste (3) human body (skin and soft tissues). The mirror method was used to analyze the potential field of point charge. Integration of the field and the area of the stimulus gave the potential field of one surface electric pole. The potential field distribution of the bipolar stimulator was obtained by superimposition of two unipolar fields. Finally, the current density distribution was calculated by Laplace equation. The analytical solution of the potential field was found and the numerical solution of the current density distribution calculated. The potential field and current density distributions were simulated by 2-D plot. From the model and simulation, the potential and current density distributions were not found to be uniform under transcutaneous stimulation electrode and the maximum current density is located under the poles. We recommend that bipolar stimulator should be applied axially along the stimulated nerve course.published_or_final_versio

Solubility of strontium-substituted apatite by solid titration

    Get PDF
Solid titration was used to explore the solubility isotherms of partially (Srx-HAp, x = 1, 5, 10, 40, 60 mol.%) and fully substituted strontium hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAp). Solubility increased with increasing strontium content. No phase other than strontium-substituted HAp, corresponding to the original titrant, was detected in the solid present at equilibrium; in particular, dicalcium hydrogen phosphate was not detected at low pH. The increase in solubility with strontium content is interpreted as a destabilization of the crystal structure by the larger strontium ion. Carbonated HAp was formed in simulated body fluid containing carbonate on seeding with Sr10-HAp, but the precipitate was strontium-substituted on seeding with Sr-HAp. Strontium-substituted HAp might be usable as a template for the growth of new bone, since nucleation appears to be facilitated. © 2008 Acta Materialia Inc.postprin
