Studies of Neutrino-Electron Scattering at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory
Studies on electron antineutrino-electron elastic scattering were performed
using a 200-kg CsI(Tl) scintillating crystal detector array at the Kuo-Sheng
Nuclear Power Plant in Taiwan. The measured cross section of R(exp) = [1.00 +-
0.32(stat)]xR(SM) is consistent with the Standard Model expectation and the
corresponding weak mixing angle derived is sin2T = 0.24 +- 0.05 (stat). The
results are consistent with a destructive interference effect between neutral
and charged-currents in this process. Limits on neutrino magnetic moment of
mu(nu_(e)) < 2.0 x 10^(-10) mu_(B) at 90% confidence level and on electron
antineutrino charge radius of r^(2) < (0.12 +- 2.07)x10^(-32) cm^2 were also
derived.Comment: Parallel talk at ICHEP08, Philadelphia, USA, July 2008. 4 pages,

Constraints on Dark Photon from Neutrino-Electron Scattering Experiments
A possible manifestation of an additional light gauge boson , named
as Dark Photon, associated with a group is studied in neutrino
electron scattering experiments. The exclusion plot on the coupling constant
and the dark photon mass is obtained. It is shown
that contributions of interference term between the dark photon and the
Standard Model are important. The interference effects are studied and compared
with for data sets from TEXONO, GEMMA, BOREXINO, LSND as well as CHARM II
experiments. Our results provide more stringent bounds to some regions of
parameter space.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, text improved, fig.6 updated,

The Forecasting Capacity of Housing Price Expectations
This study captures the essential elements of the price expectations of market participants in a rising market. Adopting a forward-looking approach, this paper explores the effectiveness of expectations as an indicator of forthcoming housing price changes in Hong Kong. Examination of the quarterly survey data from December 2003 to September 2007 indicates that both homeowners and non-homeowners tend to overestimate the probability of future housing price increases yet underestimate its volatility. This adds weight to the argument that market participants are generally not rational in the prediction of price movement. Homeowners, investors and potential home buyers have more or less the same level of confidence about the future market outlook. Like non-owners, they expect higher prices. The number of correct forecasts exceeds incorrect forecasts, suggesting that overall price expectations are fairly close to realization. It can be broadly concluded that the aggregate price expectations in the long run can be an appropriate forecasting tool for future market performance.Price expectations; Forecastability; Housing market; Hong Kong
Plant canopy shape and the influences on UV exposures to the canopy
The solar spectra at selected sites over hemispherical, conical and pinnacle plant canopy models has been evaluated with a dosimetric technique. The irradiance at the sites varies by up to a factor of 0.31 compared to the irradiance on a horizontal plane. The biologically effective (UVBE) exposures evaluated with the dosimetric technique at sites over the plant canopy are up to 19% of that on a horizontal plane. Compared to a spectroradiometer, the technique provides a more practicable method of measuring the UVBE exposures at multiple sites over a plant canopy. Usage of a dosimeter at one site to provide the exposures at that site for different sun angles introduces an error of more than 50%. Knowledge of the spectra allowed the UV and UVBE exposures to be calculated at each site along with the exposures to the entire canopies. These were dependent on the sun angle and the canopy shape. For plant damage, the UVBE was a maximum of about 1.4 mJ cm-2/min. Compared to the hemispherical canopy, the UVBE exposure for generalised plant damage was 45% less for the pinnacle canopy and 23% less for the conical canopy. The canopy exposures could not be determined from measurements of the ambient exposure
On trivial words in finitely presented groups
We propose a numerical method for studying the cogrowth of finitely presented
groups. To validate our numerical results we compare them against the
corresponding data from groups whose cogrowth series are known exactly.
Further, we add to the set of such groups by finding the cogrowth series for
Baumslag-Solitar groups and prove
that their cogrowth rates are algebraic numbers.Comment: This article has been rewritten as two separate papers, with improved
exposition. The new papers are arXiv:1309.4184 and arXiv:1312.572
Revealing the Archetype: The Journey of a Trecento Madonna and Child at the National Museum of Scotland
The National Museums Scotland Madonna and
Child project sought to uncover and document
the history of a fine polychrome wood carving
attributed to The Master of the Gualino St
Catherine and to prepare it for display. A new
body of knowledge has been assembled by
the interdisciplinary team. The conservation
treatment was informed by this work and led
to further discoveries: the removal of overpaint
exposing a previously hidden underdrawing.
The ethics of the treatment decisions, including
the removal of the Christ Child’s 1960s’ fingers required team dialogue and was opened up for
the public to respond to in a series of blogs.
The discovery of a rich polychromy including
gold and glazed tin has led to further plans to
produce a 3-D colour reconstruction. The collaborations
developed during this project will
facilitate future joint ventures for polychrome
sculpture in Scottish collections
Spectral multigrid methods for elliptic equations 2
A detailed description of spectral multigrid methods is provided. This includes the interpolation and coarse-grid operators for both periodic and Dirichlet problems. The spectral methods for periodic problems use Fourier series and those for Dirichlet problems are based upon Chebyshev polynomials. An improved preconditioning for Dirichlet problems is given. Numerical examples and practical advice are included
