    Human face profile recognition

    The purpose of this thesis is to implement an automatic person identification system based on face profiles. Each person\u27s face profile can be quite unique within a small sample population and therefore it can be used as the basis of an automatic person identification system. To quantify human face profiles for use in the recognition system, Fourier descriptors are used to describe the open curve extracted from a face profile. Fourier descriptors in the low-frequency range are shown to be useful for human face profile recognition. By using 16 Fourier coefficients, a correct recognition rate of 92% for 60 subjects was achieved

    Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: a review of the diagnosis, clinical implications and management

    Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition that affects the wellbeing of mother and fetus. Women with GDM are at risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the future, while fetal exposure to hyperglycaemia in-utero may affect their glycometabolic profile later in life. Appropriate screening and management of this problem is important in ensuring good pregnancy outcomes. In this review, the clinical implications, the various ways to screen and diagnose GDM, and management strategies during pregnancy will be discussed. For years, insulin is the mainstay of treatment if medical nutrition therapy fails to maintain adequate glycaemic control, but use of other oral pharmacotherapy may gain greater acceptance in the future. Following delivery, ongoing follow-up of these women is worthwhile as early intervention through lifestyle or pharmacotherapy may prevent the development of diabetes

    Cross-Layer Optimization of Fast Video Delivery in Cache-Enabled Relaying Networks

    This paper investigates the cross-layer optimization of fast video delivery and caching for minimization of the overall video delivery time in a two-hop relaying network. The half-duplex relay nodes are equipped with both a cache and a buffer which facilitate joint scheduling of fetching and delivery to exploit the channel diversity for improving the overall delivery performance. The fast delivery control is formulated as a two-stage functional non-convex optimization problem. By exploiting the underlying convex and quasi-convex structures, the problem can be solved exactly and efficiently by the developed algorithm. Simulation results show that significant caching and buffering gains can be achieved with the proposed framework, which translates into a reduction of the overall video delivery time.
