Comparing perceptions of nursing faculty and students to actual student performance in syringe measurement and use: An example of the Dunning-Kruger effect?

Introduction: A vital component of nursing education is the evaluation by faculty of student nurse’s skill competence. Erroneous estimations of skill competence, as in syringe measurements and dosages, can be critical to patient safety. The Dunning-Kruger effect describes the overestimation/underestimation of skill competence. It is the professional responsibility of faculty and students to be able to assess actual versus perceived competence levels accurately. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of nursing faculty and nursing students to student actual competence in syringe measurement and usage. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, comparative study conducted in a School of Nursing Skills Laboratory. Participants included faculty and 3rd and 4th year nursing students. Results: The study sample included 96 students and 30 faculty members. Significant differences were found between faculty perception and student perception of competence (p=0.001). The actual successful performance of all students was lower than expected; 3rd year students had a higher perception of their skill competence than their actual performance, and 4th year students performing at a lower level than 3rd year students (p=0.001). Discussion: Nursing faculty educators and upper-class nursing students perceived a higher level of competence than actual performance. This supports the Dunning Kruger effect and behooves nursing faculty and students to be more precise in their assessments. Conclusions: In today's milieu of online teaching, keen awareness and objectivity regarding clinical skills competence is imperative for client safety.  A longitudinal study measuring perception of competence as compared with actual skill performance is warranted

ABSTRACTConsidering literature as a living system, new discoveries and additions are part of its process of renewal and continuity. This study is the first result of a postdoctoral research which begun in 2015 at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The corpus is unpublished and composed of a collection of over 1,400 documents recording the writer Jorge Amado’s self-exile between 1941 and 1942 in Montevideo and Buenos Aires. Among the many documents, the object of the current research was limited to the correspondence and documents exchanged between Jorge Amado and Ivan Pedro de Martins, both of whom were then members of the National Alliance for Freedom (ANL) and were writing some of the most important works in Brazilian literature. Ivan Pedro de Martins was originally from the state of Minas Gerais and would be later acknowledged as one of the “border literature” writers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and he was living in self-exile, just like Jorge Amado. It was adversity which drew Martins closer to the border region of Sao Gabriel, where his father-in-law owned a ranch. Upon experiencing the daily life as a Rio Grande country man, he wrote Fronteira Agreste (1944) and Caminhos do Sul (1945), pieces considered to be fundamental for those who wish to get acquainted with southern Brazilian fiction. In addition to its historical and literary importance, the unpublished correspondence shows the friendship between the two writers: the material expression of literary opinions, venting about the country’s situation, records of personal situations, and life sharing

Successful aging, change in sexual interest and sexual satisfaction in couples from four European countries

Although the importance of sexuality and physical intimacy for well-being of older adults has been recognized, the role of sexuality in successful aging (SA) has been largely neglected. Building on our previous work, here we further validated a three-dimensional model of SA and examined its associations with sexual satisfaction and change in sexual interest among older heterosexual couples (aged 60–75 years). Participants were recruited in a probability-based survey, which was carried out in 2016–2017 in four European countries. Using structural equation modeling of the Actor–Partner Interdependence, we observed significant relationships between SA and sexual satisfaction for both male and female partners across countries. Among women, their retrospectively assessed change in sexual interest over the past 10 years was consistently associated with sexual satisfaction. Partner effects were gender-specific: male partners’ SA was significantly related to their female partners’ change in sexual interest, which in turn was linked to male partners’ sexual satisfaction. The findings point to substantial ties between successful aging and sexuality in older European couples. Taking into account the prevalent stereotypes about old age and sexuality, this study’s findings can assist professionals working with aging couples

    Ageism and sexuality

Sexuality remains important throughout a person’s life, but sexual behavior does not receive the same levels of acceptance at all ages. Older people are challenged by ageist attitudes and perceptions that hinder their sexual expression. They are stereotyped as non-sexual beings who should not, cannot, and do not want to have sexual relationships. Expressing sexuality or engaging in sexual activity in later life is considered by many in society as immoral or perverted. False expectations for older people also stem from ideals of beauty, centralization of the biomedical perspective on sexuality of older adults, and the association of sex with reproduction. Unfortunately, older people internalize many ageist attitudes towards sexuality in later life and become less interested in sex and less sexually active. The following chapter explores attitudes towards sexuality in later life among the media, young people, older people themselves, and care providers. In order to enable older people to express their sexuality and sexual identity freely and fully, awareness of ageist perceptions must be raised and defeated
