Calibration update of the COMBO-17 CDFS catalogue
We present an update to the photometric calibration of the COMBO-17 catalogue
on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, which is now consistent with the
GaBoDS and MUSYC catalogues. As a result, photometric redshifts become slightly
more accurate, with <0.01 rms and little bias in the delta_z/(1+z) of galaxies
with R<21 and of QSOs with R<24. With increasing photon noise the rms of
galaxies reaches 0.02 for R<23 and 0.035 at R~23.5. Consequences for the
rest-frame colours of galaxies at z<1 are discussed.Comment: A&A research note, resubmitted 02 Oct 2008, 4 pages in print forma
Write Channel Model for Bit-Patterned Media Recording
We propose a new write channel model for bit-patterned media recording that
reflects the data dependence of write synchronization errors. It is shown that
this model accommodates both substitution-like errors and insertion-deletion
errors whose statistics are determined by an underlying channel state process.
We study information theoretic properties of the write channel model, including
the capacity, symmetric information rate, Markov-1 rate and the zero-error
capacity.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, journa
Supersymmetric features of the Maxwell fish-eye lens
We provide a supersymmetric analysis of the Maxwell fisheye (MF) wave problem
at zero energy. Working in the so-called sector, we obtain the
corresponding superpartner (fermionic) MF effective potential within Witten's
one-dimensional (radial) supersymmetric procedure.Comment: 5 pages in Latex, one figure not included has been published as Fig.

Gaussian Belief Propagation Based Multiuser Detection
In this work, we present a novel construction for solving the linear
multiuser detection problem using the Gaussian Belief Propagation algorithm.
Our algorithm yields an efficient, iterative and distributed implementation of
the MMSE detector. We compare our algorithm's performance to a recent result
and show an improved memory consumption, reduced computation steps and a
reduction in the number of sent messages. We prove that recent work by
Montanari et al. is an instance of our general algorithm, providing new
convergence results for both algorithms.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figures, appeared in the 2008 IEEE International Symposium

Critical properties of the double exchange ferromagnet Nd0.4Pb0.4MnO3
Results of a study of dc-magnetization M(T, H), performed on a Nd0.6Pb0.4MnO3
single crystal in the temperature range around T_C (Curie temperature) which
embraces the critical region | epsilon | = |T -T_C |/T_C <= 0.05 are reported.
The magnetic data analyzed in the critical region using the Kouvel-Fisher
method give the values for the T_C =156.47 +/- 0.06 K and the critical
exponents, beta = 0.374 +/- 0.006 (from the temperature dependence of
magnetization), and gamma = 1.329 +/- 0.003 (from the temperature dependence of
initial susceptibility). The critical isotherm M(T_C, H) gives delta = 4.547
+/- 0.1. Thus the scaling law gamma+beta=delta beta is fulfilled. The critical
exponents obey the single scaling-equation of state M(H, epsilon) = epsilon^b
f_+/- (H/epsilon^(beta + gamma)) where, f_+ for T > T_C and f_- for T< T_C. The
exponent values are very close to those expected for the universality class of
3D Heisenberg ferromagnets with short-range interactions.Comment: 19 pages, including 6 figure
