Mutations in Escherichia Coli Induced by Chemical Agents
For over two decades geneticists have been interested in the possibility of inducing mutations with chemicals. Particularly, it has been hoped that mutagenic compounds might be discovered which, through their specificity of action, would lead to some understanding of the chemical basis of mutation, and ultimately of the structure and organization of the gene.
The first clearly successful attempt to induce genetic changes chemically was described by Auerbach and Robson (1944), who produced mutations and chromosomal abberrations in Drosophila by exposing the flies to mustard gas and related compounds. More recently, Demerec (1947 and unpub.) has shown that certain carcinogenic hydrocarbons (1, 2, 5, 6-dibenzanthracene, methylcholanthrene, beta naphthylamine, benzpyrene) are also effective in inducing mutations in Drosophila. These agents, like radiations, appear to be entirely nonspecific in the sense that the affected loci are distributed at random along the treated chromosomes. Nitrogen mustard has been shown to induce genetic alterations in Neurospora (Tatum, unpub.; Horowitz, Houlahan, Hungate and Wright, 1946), and in bacteria (Tatum, 1946; Bryson, unpub.), and at least one of the carcinogens, methylcholanthrene, is effective in Neurospora (Tatum, unpub.)
Signing While Driving: An Investigation of Divided Attention Resources Among Deaf Drivers
Safely operating vehicles require significant visual attention. While attention can be divided, cognitive resources are not limitless. Deaf and hearing participants engaged in a simulated driving task while simultaneously engaging in a conversation in their preferred language. Results indicated that hearing drivers may have a performance advantage over deaf drivers, though it is so minor that it will not likely be seen outside of the laboratory setting. The results also indicated differing cognitive processing among hearing and deaf drivers. The results may inform policy, reduce stigma, and serve as the base for future research on deaf-specific cognitive factors of driving
Unfolding the Hierarchy of Voids
We present a framework for the hierarchical identification and
characterization of voids based on the Watershed Void Finder. The Hierarchical
Void Finder is based on a generalization of the scale space of a density field
invoked in order to trace the hierarchical nature and structure of cosmological
voids. At each level of the hierarchy, the watershed transform is used to
identify the voids at that particular scale. By identifying the overlapping
regions between watershed basins in adjacent levels, the hierarchical void tree
is constructed. Applications on a hierarchical Voronoi model and on a set of
cosmological simulations illustrate its potential.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Activation in a Frontoparietal Cortical Network Underlies Individual Differences in the Performance of an Embedded Figures Task
The Embedded Figures Test (EFT) requires observers to search for a simple geometric shape hidden inside a more complex figure. Surprisingly, performance in the EFT is negatively correlated with susceptibility to illusions of spatial orientation, such as the Roelofs effect. Using fMRI, we previously demonstrated that regions in parietal cortex are involved in the contextual processing associated with the Roelofs task. In the present study, we found that similar parietal regions (superior parietal cortex and precuneus) were more active during the EFT than during a simple matching task. Importantly, these parietal activations overlapped with regions found to be involved during contextual processing in the Roelofs illusion. Additional parietal and frontal areas, in the right hemisphere, showed strong correlations between brain activity and behavioral performance during the search task. We propose that the posterior parietal regions are necessary for processing contextual information across many different, but related visuospatial tasks, with additional parietal and frontal regions serving to coordinate this processing in participants proficient in the task

Zika virus infection in pregnancy and adverse fetal outcomes in São Paulo State, Brazil: a prospective cohort study.
Robust epidemiological and biological evidence supports a causal link between prenatal Zika Virus (ZIKV) infection and congenital brain abnormalities including microcephaly. However, it remains uncertain if ZIKV infection in pregnancy also increases the risk for other adverse fetal and birth outcomes. In a prospective cohort study we investigated the influence of ZIKV on the prevalence of prematurity, low birth weight, small-for-gestational-age, and fetal death as well as microcephaly (i.e., overall and disproportionate) in the offspring of women attending a high-risk pregnancy clinic during the recent ZIKV outbreak in Brazil. During the recruitment period (01 March 2016-23 August 2017), urine samples were tested for ZIKV by RT-PCR from all women attending the high-risk pregnancy clinic at Jundiaà University Hospital and from the neonates after delivery. Of the 574 women evaluated, 44 (7.7%) were ZIKV RT-PCR positive during pregnancy. Of the 409 neonates tested, 19 (4.6%) were ZIKV RT-PCR positive in the first 10 days of life. In this cohort, maternal ZIKV exposure was not associated with increased risks of prematurity, low birth weight, small-for-gestational-age, or fetal death. However, relative to ZIKV-negative neonates, ZIKV-positive infants had a five-fold increased risk of microcephaly overall (RR 5.1, 95% CI 1.2-22.5) and a ten-fold increased risk of disproportionate microcephaly (RR 10.3, 95% CI 2.0-52.6). Our findings provide new evidence that, in a high-risk pregnancy cohort, ZIKV RT-PCR positivity in the neonate at birth is strongly associated with microcephaly. However, ZIKV infection during pregnancy does not appear to influence the risks of prematurity, low birth weight, small-for-gestational-age or fetal death in women who already have gestational comorbidities. The results suggest disproportion between neonatal head circumference and weight may be a useful screening indicator for the detection of congenital microcephaly associated with ZIKV infection
Global and local perceptual style, field-independence, and central coherence: An attempt at concept validation.
Historically, the concepts of field-independence, closure flexibility, and weak
central coherence have been used to denote a locally, rather globally, dominated
perceptual style. To date, there has been little attempt to clarify the
relationship between these constructs, or to examine the convergent validity of
the various tasks purported to measure them. To address this, we administered 14
tasks that have been used to study visual perceptual styles to a group of 90
neuro-typical adults. The data were subjected to exploratory factor analysis. We
found evidence for the existence of a narrowly defined weak central coherence
(field-independence) factor that received loadings from only a few of the tasks
used to operationalise this concept. This factor can most aptly be described as
representing the ability to dis-embed a simple stimulus from a more complex
array. The results suggest that future studies of perceptual styles should
include tasks whose theoretical validity is empirically verified, as such
validity cannot be established merely on the basis of a priori task analysis.
