Unidentified Infrared Emission Bands in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium
Using the Mid-Infrared Spectrometer on board the Infrared Telescope in Space
and the low-resolution grating spectrometer (PHT-S) on board the Infrared Space
Observatory, we obtained 820 mid-infrared (5 to 12 m) spectra of the
diffuse interstellar medium (DIM) in the Galactic center, W51, and Carina
Nebula regions. These spectra indicate that the emission is dominated by the
unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 m.
The relative band intensities (6.2/7.7 m, 8.6/7.7 m, and 11.2/7.7
m) were derived from these spectra, and no systematic variation in these
ratios was found in our observed regions, in spite of the fact that the
incident radiation intensity differs by a factor of 1500. Comparing our results
with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) model for the UIR band
carriers, PAHs in the DIM have no systematic variation in their size
distribution, their degree of dehydrogenation is independent of the strength of
UV radiation field, and they are mostly ionized. The latter finding is
incompatible with past theoretical studies, in which a large fraction of
neutral PAHs is predicted in this kind of environment. A plausible resolution
of this discrepancy is that the recombination coefficients for electron and
large PAH positive ion are by at least an order of magnitude less than those
adopted in past theoretical studies. Because of the very low population of
neutral state molecules, photoelectric emission from interstellar PAHs is
probably not the dominant source of heating of the diffuse interstellar gas.
The present results imply constant physical and chemical properties of the

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Sympathetic Crystallization of Molecular Ions
It is shown that the translational degrees of freedom of a large variety of
molecules, from light diatomic to heavy organic ones, can be cooled
sympathetically and brought to rest (crystallized) in a linear Paul trap. The
method relies on endowing the molecules with an appropriate positive charge,
storage in a linear radiofrequency trap, and sympathetic cooling. Two
well--known atomic coolant species, and
, are sufficient for cooling the molecular mass range
from 2 to 20,000 amu. The large molecular charge required for simultaneous
trapping of heavy molecules and of the coolant ions can easily be produced
using electrospray ionization. Crystallized molecular ions offer vast

Greater Sage-Grouse Resource Selection Drives Reproductive Fitness Under a Conifer Removal Strategy
The link between individual variation in resource selection (e.g., functional response) and fitness creates a foundation for understanding wildlife-habitat relationships. Although many anthropogenic activities adversely affect these relationships, it is largely unknown whether projects implemented to benefit wildlife populations actually achieve this outcome. For sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) obligate species such as the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; sage-grouse), expansion of juniper (Juniperus spp.) and pinyon-pine (Pinus spp.; conifers) woodlands into sagebrush ecosystems has been identified as a conservation threat. This threat is intensified when a sagebrush ecosystem is bounded by naturally unsuitable habitats. As such, federal, state, and private land managers have implemented landscape-level management to remove conifers on thousands of hectares of sagebrush habitat across the western United States. Despite the scale of contemporary conifer treatments, little was previously known whether sage-grouse will occupy these manipulated landscapes and whether occupancy has consequences on fitness components. To address these questions, we monitored nest and brood success rates for 96 radio-marked sage-grouse from 2012-2015 that inhabited conifer-dominated landscapes in the Box Elder Sage-grouse Management Area in Utah where mechanical conifer removal projects were completed. We then linked sage-grouse resource selection to individual nest (n = 95) and brood (n = 56) success by incorporating random-slope Resource Selection Functions as explanatory predictors in a logistic brood success model. Using the novel approach of random slope covariates, we demonstrated that sage-grouse selected for nest and brooding sites closer to conifer removal areas and that the probability of individual nest and brood success declined (β = − 0.10 and β = − 0.74, respectively) as sage-grouse females selected sites farther from conifer removal areas. Our research provided the first evidence that mechanical conifer removal treatments can increase suitable available breeding habitats for female sage-grouse and that individuals who occupied these areas experienced enhanced nest and brood success
Absent or overlooked? Promoting diversity among entrepreneurs with public support needs
Despite the widely recognized importance of diversity for business performance, knowledge concerning the support needs of under-represented groups is still limited. We adopt an intersectional approach to analyse the challenges and support needs of ethnic minority entrepreneurs and those with disabilities to participate in entrepreneurial activity in the UK. Our qualitative data is based on focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The findings suggest that engagement in entrepreneurship is influenced not just by minority status, but by the specific relations to other socio-demographic categories within which that status is embedded. Intersectional counter-frames form part of the strategies utilized by individuals to gain access to otherwise limited resources. We develop a conceptual model for promoting greater equality, diversity and inclusion within an entrepreneurial ecosystem, and recommend a more holistic approach to realizing inclusive economic growth. This includes adopting a hybrid/blended approach that combines targeted programmes with the development of mainstream support programmes
Comparative Modelling of the Spectra of Cool Giants
Our ability to extract information from the spectra of stars depends on
reliable models of stellar atmospheres and appropriate techniques for spectral
synthesis. Various model codes and strategies for the analysis of stellar
spectra are available today. We aim to compare the results of deriving stellar
parameters using different atmosphere models and different analysis strategies.
The focus is set on high-resolution spectroscopy of cool giant stars. Spectra
representing four cool giant stars were made available to various groups and
individuals working in the area of spectral synthesis, asking them to derive
stellar parameters from the data provided. The results were discussed at a
workshop in Vienna in 2010. Most of the major codes currently used in the
astronomical community for analyses of stellar spectra were included in this
experiment. We present the results from the different groups, as well as an
additional experiment comparing the synthetic spectra produced by various codes
for a given set of stellar parameters. Similarities and differences of the
results are discussed. Several valid approaches to analyze a given spectrum of
a star result in quite a wide range of solutions. The main causes for the
differences in parameters derived by different groups seem to lie in the
physical input data and in the details of the analysis method. This clearly

Slowing and cooling molecules and neutral atoms by time-varying electric field gradients
A method of slowing, accelerating, cooling, and bunching molecules and
neutral atoms using time-varying electric field gradients is demonstrated with
cesium atoms in a fountain. The effects are measured and found to be in
agreement with calculation. Time-varying electric field gradient slowing and
cooling is applicable to atoms that have large dipole polarizabilities,
including atoms that are not amenable to laser slowing and cooling, to Rydberg
atoms, and to molecules, especially polar molecules with large electric dipole
moments. The possible applications of this method include slowing and cooling
thermal beams of atoms and molecules, launching cold atoms from a trap into a

Wearable Haptic Devices for Gait Re-education by Rhythmic Haptic Cueing
This research explores the development and evaluation of wearable haptic devices for gait sensing and rhythmic haptic cueing in the context of gait re-education for people with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions. Many people with long-term neurological and neurodegenerative conditions such as Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease suffer from impaired walking gait pattern. Gait improvement can lead to better fluidity in walking, improved health outcomes, greater independence, and enhanced quality of life. Existing lab-based studies with wearable devices have shown that rhythmic haptic cueing can cause immediate improvements to gait features such as temporal symmetry, stride length, and walking speed. However, current wearable systems are unsuitable for self-managed use for in-the-wild applications with people having such conditions. This work aims to investigate the research question of how wearable haptic devices can help in long-term gait re-education using rhythmic haptic cueing. A longitudinal pilot study has been conducted with a brain trauma survivor, providing rhythmic haptic cueing using a wearable haptic device as a therapeutic intervention for a two-week period. Preliminary results comparing pre and post-intervention gait measurements have shown improvements in walking speed, temporal asymmetry, and stride length. The pilot study has raised an array of issues that require further study. This work aims to develop and evaluate prototype systems through an iterative design process to make possible the self-managed use of such devices in-the-wild. These systems will directly provide therapeutic intervention for gait re-education, offer enhanced information for therapists, remotely monitor dosage adherence and inform treatment and prognoses over the long-term. This research will evaluate the use of technology from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, including clinicians, carers and patients. This work has the potential to impact clinical practice nationwide and worldwide in neuro-physiotherapy
Assessment of wear resistance of tin and tin alloy coatings
Tin alloy coatings have traditionally been used as corrosion resistant bamens due to their inert nature and comprehensive coverage, and have seldom been considered in physically demanding applications, such as wear resistant coatings owing to misconceptions associated with the soft nature of tin metal. The alloying of tin with copper has already been shown to significantly increase its mechanical properties, as demonstrated by the adoption of tin-copper alloys for use as bearing materials. Unfortunately, its cyanide plating technology makes tin-copper environmentally unsustainable, whilst the process requires constant regulation and monitoring, and there are disposal costs associated with the cyanide waste products. The tin-nickel alloy, however, can be produced with minimal supervision and its plating process uses less harmful precursors, making it an alternative consideration. The research documented in this thesis assesses this increase by quantifying the resistance of tin, tin-nickel and tin-copper coatings to removal from sliding wear. As tin is a soft material and behaves dissimilarly to conventional coatings in a sliding wear environment, traditional wear assessment techniques are not appropriate. A novel approach is therefore devised and implemented, and this involves the continually monitoring the effect of damage introduced to the surface of the tin and tin alloy coatings, from an abrading ceramic ball. Using an elemental detection tool, it is possible to analyse wear scars that exhibit progressively depleted coating material, by identifying the underlying substrate material as it becomes exposed. In this way, it is possible to quantify the improvements made to tin from alloying with nickel and copper. The large volume of data acquired from this research is presented in a matrix format to enable simultaneous depiction of multiple parameters, and to allow quick and easy interpretation. The tin-nickel coating is found to be comparable to tin-copper in terms of resistance to removal. Despite tin-copper being slightly superior over the range of test conditions used, tin-nickel as been shown to be an environmentally friendly and cost effective alternative coating alloy to tin-copper.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceITRI LtdGBUnited Kingdo
Hand numbness and carpal tunnel syndrome after volar plating of distal radius fracture
We report the incidence of late onset post-operative carpal tunnel syndrome (late carpal tunnel syndrome) and late median nerve neuropathy after volar plating of distal radius fracture by conducting a retrospective study on volar plating for distal radius fracture performed during 2002 to 2006. Two hundred eighty-two volar plating were performed for acute distal radius fracture after exclusion. Post-operative hand numbness occurred in 24 patients of which nine had carpal tunnel syndrome. Thus, the incidence of late carpal tunnel syndrome was 3.2% (9/282). Of the eight (8/24, 33%) patients with post-operative hand numbness that failed to respond to conservative treatment, five had carpal tunnel release and three had neurolysis of median nerve at distal forearm. All had clinical improvement except in one patient. The incidence of late carpal tunnel syndrome after volar plating of distal radius in the present series is similar to the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in general population. The incidence is low compared with other series, regardless of treatment method (conservative treatment, volar or dorsal plating). The outcome of post-operative hand numbness is generally favourable
