Effect of Temperature and Humidity on Survival of Coptotermes formosanus and Reticulitermes flavipes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
Two subterranean termite species were subjected to combinations of six temperatures (10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, or 35°C) and five relative humidities (RH) (55, 65, 75, 85, or 99%) to determine optimum conditions for survival. When small groups of the Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki or the eastern subterranean termite Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) were exposed to all 30 combinations of temperature and RH, survival times were significantly influenced by temperature, RH, and their interaction. For both species, survival times were longest at low temperatures and high RH. Maximum survival of small groups of C. formosanus and R. flavipes workers and soldiers occurred at the combination of 10°C and 99% RH C (LT50= 28.2 d, LT50 = 18.1 d, respectively). Survival of paired C. formosanus dealates was evaluated at combinations of 20°, 25°, or 30°C and 55, 65, 75, 85, or 99% RH. Survival was strongly influenced by temperature and humidity. Longest survival times until 50% mortality occurred at 99% RH and 20° or 25°C (LT50= 2.5 d, LT50 = 3.0 d, respectively). At all temperatures, mortality occurred too quickly for LT50 values to be determined when RH was 55% or 65%
“Who Runs the World? Girls!” A Case Study on the Role that Stacey Abrams Has Played in Changing the African American Political Voice and American Political Realm as a Whole
Stacey Abrams is one of the most prominent up-and-coming politicians in America. From her controversial gubernatorial race in 2018 to her post-election voting rights efforts, she is consistently at the forefront of many political discussions and debates. Nonetheless, with all this notoriety, there has not been much research on her life and impact relative to her peers or predecessors. What makes Stacey Abrams as popular and accepted as she is to the public? How is she the same as other American politicians, both male, and female? Who is Stacey Abrams? This study focuses on answering these questions through a case study built on numerous sources and articles. The goal was to build means of comparison with Abrams at the center. Through this study, I was able to dissect the life of Ms. Abrams on many points that would allow for both the study to be done and for readers to learn about her origins. In the end, my main hope is that readers will be able to learn, understand, and appreciate how amazing Stacey Abrams is and take heed to the many efforts she is taking to make America a better place
What's the most effective way to screen patients with a family history of colon cancer?
The best approach hinges on the number, degree, and age of relatives diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) or adenomatous polyps (AP). Screening should begin at 40 years of age for patients with a family history of CRC or AP in at least 1 first-degree relative or CRC in at least 2 second-degree relatives (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, extrapolation from systematic reviews)
What is the most effective and safe malaria prophylaxis during pregnancy?
Chloroquine and mefloquine have superior safety profiles in pregnancy, though all antimalarials are effective for prophylaxis. Antimalarials will decrease the severity of maternal malaria infection and malaria-associated anemia, while decreasing the incidence of low birth weight and perinatal death in women having their first or second baby (strength of recommendation [SOR]: A, based on systematic review of consistent, good-quality patient-oriented evidence)
Secondary School Teachers' Perceptions of Working with Students Who Identify as Transgender
Purpose
Students who identify as transgender often are met with harassment and bullying in schools due to their gender expression or sexual orientation. Researchers suggest that when educators intervene, school bullying can be reduced. However, to effectively provide academic and social support, teachers’ first must be aware of their own biases and perceptions of marginalized students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore secondary teachers’ perceptions of working with students who identify as transgender. Understanding teachers’ perceptions and experiences in working with students identifying as transgender revealed strategies for preparing educators to support safe school learning environments for all students.
Methodology
A purposeful criterion sampling scheme was used to select six secondary teacher participants. A qualitative phenomenological design was utilized to explore teachers’ shared experiences and perceptions of working with students identifying as transgender. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as the primary data source. Interviews were transcribed, and data were analyzed to identify common themes in teacher participants’ perceptions and experiences.
Findings
In addressing the research questions in this study, four major themes emerged including: (a) school wide support, (b) teacher preparation and training, (c) teacher behavior, and (d) the notion of a new normal. Each emergent theme and subtheme provided insight into the teacher participants’ perceptions of working with students who identify as transgender.
Implications
The findings from this research study indicated a need to: increase school-wide supports for students identifying as transgender, provide educator training, cultivate teachers’ acceptance of all students, respond to gender-identity related bullying incidents in schools, and develop awareness of the “new normal” around gender identification in today’s schools
