    An edition of Svipdagsmál

    Section I of this thesis establishes a text of the two Old Norse poems Gróugaldr and Fjǫlsvinnsmál, known collectively as Svipdagsmál (Sv). Previous editions are surveyed, discussing their use of the two MSS upon which the emended text offered by this edition is based, Stockholm Papp. 15 8vo and Rask 21 a (I.1). Reasons are given for the choice of these two MSS (out of the forty six MSS known to the editor) and the two MSS are described (I.2). The emended and normalised text is accompanied by a translation and summary apparatus (I.3), followed by a Commentary (I.4). A reconstruction is attempted of the history of the MS tradition (I.5). This reconstruction is based on computer collation of the MSS and database analysis of the collation, together with external evidence where available. The reconstruction confirms the choice of Stockholm Papp. 15 8vo and Rask 21 a: most of the other MSS appear descended from one of these two. Section II gathers together analogues to the poems in Celtic, Icelandic and Scandinavian ballad tradition. The story was earlier an Irish mythical tale, itself an adaptation of an international popular tale of the "giant's daughter" type (II.2). Traces of this original tale are to be found in Icelandic popular tradition (II.3). The Scandinavian Ungen Svendal ballads seem derived from Sv itself (II.4). Section III analyses the poet's use of Old Norse poetic and mythological materials. The poems are skilful studies in Eddic style (III.2) and the poet shows a deliberate creativity in the adaptation and invention of mythological material (III.3-5). Evidence is presented for a date of composition in the early thirteenth century (IV.1). A study of the art of the poems shows a poet of rare skill (IV.2)

    u-RANIA: a neutron detector based on \mu -RWELL technology

    In the framework of the ATTRACT-uRANIA project, funded by the European Community, we are developing an innovative neutron imaging detector based on micro-Resistive WELL (μ\mu -RWELL) technology. The μ\mu -RWELL, based on the resistive detector concept, ensuring an efficient spark quenching mechanism, is a highly reliable device. It is composed by two main elements: a readout-PCB and a cathode. The amplification stage for this device is embedded in the readout board through a resistive layer realized by means of an industrial process with DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon). A thin layer of B4_4C on the copper surface of the cathode allows the thermal neutrons detection through the release of 7^7Li and α\alpha particles in the active volume. This technology has been developed to be an efficient and convenient alternative to the 3^3He shortage. The goal of the project is to prove the feasibility of such a novel neutron detector by developing and testing small planar prototypes with readout boards suitably segmented with strip or pad read out, equipped with existing electronics or readout in current mode. Preliminary results from the test with different prototypes, showing a good agreement with the simulation, will be presented together with construction details of the prototypes and the future steps of the project.Comment: Prepared for the INSTR20 Conference Proceeding for JINS

    A model to predict disease progression in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD): the ADPKD Outcomes Model.

    Background: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the leading inheritable cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD); however, the natural course of disease progression is heterogeneous between patients. This study aimed to develop a natural history model of ADPKD that predicted progression rates and long-term outcomes in patients with differing baseline characteristics. Methods: The ADPKD Outcomes Model (ADPKD-OM) was developed using available patient-level data from the placebo arm of the Tolvaptan Efficacy and Safety in Management of ADPKD and its Outcomes Study (TEMPO 3:4; ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT00428948). Multivariable regression equations estimating annual rates of ADPKD progression, in terms of total kidney volume (TKV) and estimated glomerular filtration rate, formed the basis of the lifetime patient-level simulation model. Outputs of the ADPKD-OM were compared against external data sources to validate model accuracy and generalisability to other ADPKD patient populations, then used to predict long-term outcomes in a cohort matched to the overall TEMPO 3:4 study population. Results: A cohort with baseline patient characteristics consistent with TEMPO 3:4 was predicted to reach ESRD at a mean age of 52 years. Most patients (85%) were predicted to reach ESRD by the age of 65 years, with many progressing to ESRD earlier in life (18, 36 and 56% by the age of 45, 50 and 55 years, respectively). Consistent with previous research and clinical opinion, analyses supported the selection of baseline TKV as a prognostic factor for ADPKD progression, and demonstrated its value as a strong predictor of future ESRD risk. Validation exercises and illustrative analyses confirmed the ability of the ADPKD-OM to accurately predict disease progression towards ESRD across a range of clinically-relevant patient profiles. Conclusions: The ADPKD-OM represents a robust tool to predict natural disease progression and long-term outcomes in ADPKD patients, based on readily available and/or measurable clinical characteristics. In conjunction with clinical judgement, it has the potential to support decision-making in research and clinical practice

    Structural change in a B-DNA helix with hydrostatic pressure

    Study of the effects of pressure on macromolecular structure improves our understanding of the forces governing structure, provides details on the relevance of cavities and packing in structure, increases our understanding of hydration and provides a basis to understand the biology of high-pressure organisms. A study of DNA, in particular, helps us to understand how pressure can affect gene activity. Here we present the first high-resolution experimental study of B-DNA structure at high pressure, using NMR data acquired at pressures up to 200 MPa (2 kbar). The structure of DNA compresses very little, but is distorted so as to widen the minor groove, and to compress hydrogen bonds, with AT pairs compressing more than GC pairs. The minor groove changes are suggested to lead to a compression of the hydration water in the minor groove

    Joining the conspiracy? Negotiating ethics and emotions in researching (around) AIDS in southern Africa

    AIDS is an emotive subject, particularly in southern Africa. Among those who have been directly affected by the disease, or who perceive themselves to be personally at risk, talking about AIDS inevitably arouses strong emotions - amongst them fear, distress, loss and anger. Conventionally, human geography research has avoided engagement with such emotions. Although the ideal of the detached observer has been roundly critiqued, the emphasis in methodological literature on 'doing no harm' has led even qualitative researchers to avoid difficult emotional encounters. Nonetheless, research is inevitably shaped by emotions, not least those of the researchers themselves. In this paper, we examine the role of emotions in the research process through our experiences of researching the lives of 'Young AIDS migrants' in Malawi and Lesotho. We explore how the context of the research gave rise to the production of particular emotions, and how, in response, we shaped the research, presenting a research agenda focused more on migration than AIDS. This example reveals a tension between universalised ethics expressed through ethical research guidelines that demand informed consent, and ethics of care, sensitive to emotional context. It also demonstrates how dualistic distinctions between reason and emotion, justice and care, global and local are unhelpful in interpreting the ethics of research practice

    Women’s voices, emotion and empathy: engaging different publics with ‘everyday’ health histories

    This article explores our experiences on a Wellcome Trust-funded project on women’s experiences of ‘everyday health’ in Britain between the 1960s and the 1990s. We explore issues around researching ‘everyday health’, including the generation and interpretation of source materials, and the role of empathy and emotion in interactions with different audiences as we share these materials in public engagement activities. We discuss three case studies of engagement activities to draw out potential uses of source materials and the responses of different audiences to these materials, and reflect on what we have learnt since embarking on these public engagement activities. We took into our interactions with different audiences the belief that fully historicised understandings of ‘health’ enrich individual lives and create new capacities for meaningful action now. The public engagement activities we carried out reinforced this belief, but also caused us to question some of our assumptions. In particular, an activity with trainee healthcare professionals designed to demonstrate how active and empathetic listening can prevent the unintentional infliction of harm in healthcare settings achieved this end—but did so in a way that was itself unintentionally insensitive to the pressures healthcare professionals face. Medical humanities can help to contextualise, nuance and improve healthcare practice—but only through active listening and dialogue across medicine and the humanities. We conclude by considering how these activities, which currently rely on the interpersonal relations of the team with audiences, might be adapted and preserved in digital form beyond the span of the project

    Diet and lupus: what do the patients think?

    OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Therefore, using diet to control blood lipid levels and modify cardiovascular disease risk could be a promising therapeutic strategy to control disease symptoms. The primary objective of this study was to learn about systemic lupus erythematosus patient experiences with diet, including their opinion on considering diet as a therapeutic option. The secondary objective was to obtain this information in a cost- and time-effective manner. METHODS: A lay summary and a 15-question diet-based online survey were publicly available for 3 weeks. Social media was used to promote the survey through relevant charities, hospitals and research groups. RESULTS: A total of 300 responses were received, 284 from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Patients reported that there was a lack of clinical counselling regarding diet, with only 24% stating their doctor had spoken to them about diet. Despite this, 100% of patients stated they would change their diet if they knew it would help their symptoms and 83% would take part in a future diet-based clinical trial. Text analysis of patient research suggestions identified a particular interest in using diet to treat fatigue and manage disease flares. CONCLUSIONS: This project successfully gathered patient information regarding diet and systemic lupus erythematosus over a short timeframe using an anonymous social media platform. The survey provided evidence that patients support further research and potential diet intervention studies investigating the effect of diet on the symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus
