The properties of extragalactic radio sources selected at 20 GHz
We present some first results on the variability, polarization and general
properties of radio sources selected in a blind survey at 20 GHz, the highest
frequency at which a sensitive radio survey has been carried out over a large
area of sky. Sources with flux densities above 100 mJy in the AT20G Pilot
Survey at declination -60 to -70 were observed at up to three epochs during
2002-4, including near-simultaneous measurements at 5, 8 and 18 GHz in 2003. Of
the 173 sources detected, 65% are candidate QSOs, BL Lac objects or blazars,
20% galaxies and 15% faint (b > 22 mag) optical objects or blank fields.
On a 1-2 year timescale, the general level of variability at 20 GHz appears
to be low. For the 108 sources with good-quality measurements in both 2003 and
2004, the median variability index at 20 GHz was 6.9% and only five sources
varied by more than 30% in flux density.
Most sources in our sample show low levels of linear polarization (typically
1-5%), with a median fractional polarization of 2.3% at 20 GHz. There is a
trend for fainter sources to show higher fractional polarization.
At least 40% of sources selected at 20GHz have strong spectral curvature over
the frequency range 1-20 GHz. We use a radio `two-colour diagram' to
characterize the radio spectra of our sample, and confirm that the radio-source
population at 20 GHz (which is also the foreground point-source population for
CMB anisotropy experiments like WMAP and Planck) cannot be reliably predicted
by extrapolating the results of surveys at lower frequencies. As a result,
direct selection at 20 GHz appears to be a more efficient way of identifying 90
GHz phase calibrators for ALMA than the currently-proposed technique of

The role of l-arabinose metabolism for <i>Escherichia coli</i> O157:H7 in edible plants
International audienceArabinose is a major plant aldopentose in the form of arabinans complexed in cell wall polysaccharides or glycoproteins (AGP), but comparatively rare as a monosaccharide. l -arabinose is an important bacterial metabolite, accessed by pectolytic micro-organisms such as Pectobacterium atrosepticum via pectin and hemicellulose degrading enzymes. However, not all plant-associated microbes encode cell-wall-degrading enzymes, yet can metabolize l -arabinose, raising questions about their use of and access to the glycan in plants. Therefore, we examined l -arabinose metabolism in the food-borne pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7 (isolate Sakai) during its colonization of plants. l -arabinose metabolism ( araBA ) and transport ( araF ) genes were activated at 18 °C in vitro by l -arabinose and expressed over prolonged periods in planta . Although deletion of araBAD did not impact the colonization ability of E. coli O157:H7 (Sakai) on spinach and lettuce plants (both associated with STEC outbreaks), araA was induced on exposure to spinach cell-wall polysaccharides. Furthermore, debranched and arabinan oligosaccharides induced ara metabolism gene expression in vitro , and stimulated modest proliferation, while immobilized pectin did not. Thus, E. coli O157:H7 (Sakai) can utilize pectin/AGP-derived l -arabinose as a metabolite. Furthermore, it differs fundamentally in ara gene organization, transport and regulation from the related pectinolytic species P. atrosepticum , reflective of distinct plant-associated lifestyles
Analytic Treatment of Positronium Spin Splittings in Light-Front QED
We study the QED bound-state problem in a light-front hamiltonian approach.
Starting with a bare cutoff QED Hamiltonian, , with matrix elements
between free states of drastically different energies removed, we perform a
similarity transformation that removes the matrix elements between free states
with energy differences between the bare cutoff, , and effective
cutoff, \lam (\lam < \Lam). This generates effective interactions in the
renormalized Hamiltonian, . These effective interactions are derived
to order in this work, with . is renormalized
by requiring it to satisfy coupling coherence. A nonrelativistic limit of the
theory is taken, and the resulting Hamiltonian is studied using bound-state
perturbation theory (BSPT). The effective cutoff, \lam^2, is fixed, and the
limit, 0 \longleftarrow m^2 \alpha^2\ll \lam^2 \ll m^2 \alpha \longrightarrow
\infty, is taken. This upper bound on \lam^2 places the effects of
low-energy (energy transfer below \lam) emission in the effective
interactions in the sector. This lower bound on \lam^2
insures that the nonperturbative scale of interest is not removed by the
similarity transformation. As an explicit example of the general formalism
introduced, we show that the Hamiltonian renormalized to reproduces
the exact spectrum of spin splittings, with degeneracies dictated by rotational
symmetry, for the ground state through . The entire calculation is
performed analytically, and gives the well known singlet-triplet ground state
spin splitting of positronium, . We discuss remaining
corrections other than the spin splittings and how they can be treated in

Factors Predicting Long-term Outcome and the Need for Surgery in Graves Orbitopathy: Extended Follow-up From the CIRTED Trial
UNLABELLED: Graves Orbitopathy is both disabling and disfiguring. Medical therapies to reduce inflammation are widely used, but there is limited trial data beyond 18 months of follow-up. METHODS: 3 year follow-up of a subset of the CIRTED trial (N=68) which randomized patients to receive high dose oral steroid with azathioprine/placebo and radiotherapy/sham radiotherapy. RESULTS: Data were available at 3 years from 68 of 126 randomised subjects (54%). No additional benefit was seen at 3 years for patients randomized to azathioprine or radiotherapy with regard to a Binary Clinical Composite Outcome Measure, modified EUGOGO score or Ophthalmopathy Index.Clinical Activity Score (CAS), Ophthalmopathy Index and Total Eye Score improved over 3 years (p<0.001). However, quality of life at 3 years remained poor. Of 64 individuals with available surgical outcome data, 24/64 (37.5%) required surgical intervention. Disease duration of greater than 6 months before treatment was associated with increased need for surgery OR=16.8 (95%CI 2.95, 95.0) p=0.001. Higher baseline levels of CAS, Ophthalmopathy Index and Total Eye Score but not early improvement in CAS were associated with increased requirement for surgery. CONCLUSION: In this long-term follow-up from a clinical trial, 3 year outcomes remained suboptimal with ongoing poor quality of life and high numbers requiring surgery. Importantly, reduction in CAS in the first year, a commonly used surrogate outcome measure, was not associated with improved long-term outcomes
Assessment of protein allergenicity on the basis of immune reactivity: animal models.
Because of the public concern surrounding the issue of the safety of genetically modified organisms, it is critical to have appropriate methodologies to aid investigators in identifying potential hazards associated with consumption of foods produced with these materials. A recent panel of experts convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization suggested there is scientific evidence that using data from animal studies will contribute important information regarding the allergenicity of foods derived from biotechnology. This view has given further impetus to the development of suitable animal models for allergenicity assessment. This article is a review of what has been achieved and what still has to be accomplished regarding several different animal models. Progress made in the design and evaluation of models in the rat, the mouse, the dog and in swine is reviewed and discussed
