    Genetic Relationships of Some Common Arkansas Freshwater Sunfishes (Centrarchidae: Lepomis) Inferred From Restriction Endonuclease Analysis of Mitochondrial DNA

    Geographic isolation and habitat specialization has aided in the evolution and maintenance of genetic integrity of the lepomid sunfishes (Lepomis: Centrarchidae) of North America. Our goal was to measure genetic distances between four of the eleven extant sunfish species by using mitochondrial DNA analysis. Mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were examined in bluegill (L. macrochirus), redear sunfish (L. microlophus), longear sunfish (L. megalotis), and green sunfish (L. cyanellus) using 15 restriction endonucleases. The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) was used as an outgroup. The phylogeny inferred from Dollo parsimony cladistic analysis largely concurred with published results from allozyme analyses and the fossil record, yet was inconsistent with published anatomical analyses. Genetic distances between species ranged from 0.1627 to 0.3328. The green sunfish was the basal member of the genus, whereas the bluegill was the most diverged from the largemouth bass. These four species diverged over a broad time frame, with estimated times of speciation occurring during Miocene (8.14 - 16.64 mya)

    Electron Beam Transport in Advanced Plasma Wave Accelerators

    The primary goal of this grant was to develop a diagnostic for relativistic plasma wave accelerators based on injecting a low energy electron beam (5-50keV) perpendicular to the plasma wave and observing the distortion of the electron beam's cross section due to the plasma wave's electrostatic fields. The amount of distortion would be proportional to the plasma wave amplitude, and is the basis for the diagnostic. The beat-wave scheme for producing plasma waves, using two CO2 laser beam, was modeled using a leap-frog integration scheme to solve the equations of motion. Single electron trajectories and corresponding phase space diagrams were generated in order to study and understand the details of the interaction dynamics. The electron beam was simulated by combining thousands of single electrons, whose initial positions and momenta were selected by random number generators. The model was extended by including the interactions of the electrons with the CO2 laser fields of the beat wave, superimposed with the plasma wave fields. The results of the model were used to guide the design and construction of a small laboratory experiment that may be used to test the diagnostic idea

    The role of niobium carbides in the localised corrosion initiation of 20Cr-25Ni-Nb advanced gas-cooled reactor fuel cladding

    The role of niobium carbide (NbC) inclusions in directing the initiation of localised corrosion in sensitised 20Cr-25Ni-Nb stainless steel is investigated using a range of in-situ scanning techniques, allowing visualisation of corrosion behaviour over multiple length scales. Volta potential mapping shows NbC inclusions are up to 30 mV noble to the matrix, while chromium-depleted grain boundaries are up to 65 mV less noble. Corrosion initiation, shown by scanning vibrating electrode technique to comprise highly localised anode sites, is observed at grain boundaries, adjacent to the location of NbC inclusion clusters which remain unaffected by anodic dissolution of the surrounding matrix

    Employment is maintained and sick days decreased in psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis patients with etanercept treatment

    BACKGROUND: Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) impair quality of life, including reduction in employment or job duties. The PRESTA (Psoriasis Randomized Etanercept STudy in Patients with Psoriatic Arthritis) study, a randomized, double-blind, two-dose trial, examined the efficacy of etanercept treatment in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and PsA and the main results have been presented previously. This analysis examined employment status, job duties and sick days, pre-defined endpoints in PRESTA, among this patient population. METHODS: Participants (N = 752) were randomized to receive etanercept 50 mg twice weekly (BIW; n = 379) or 50 mg once weekly (QW; n = 373) for 12 weeks by subcutaneous injection. All participants then received open-label etanercept 50 mg QW for 12 additional weeks, while remaining blinded to the randomization. A pharmacoeconomic questionnaire was administered at baseline, week 12 and week 24 of treatment. The questionnaire included employment status and changing job responsibilities and sick time taken due to psoriasis or PsA. The statistical methods included analysis of covariance, t-test, Fisher's exact test and McNemar's test. Last-observation-carried-forward imputation was used for missing data. RESULTS: Employment was at least maintained from baseline to week 24 in both dose groups (56% [BIW/QW] and 60% [QW/QW] at baseline, 61% and 60%, respectively, at week 24). Among employed participants, the proportion of patients whose job responsibilities changed due to PsA decreased significantly from baseline to week 24 (17-23% to 5-8%; p < 0.01). Similar results were seen with job responsibility changes due to psoriasis (11-14% to 4%; p < 0.01). The number of monthly sick days also decreased from baseline to week 24 (2.4 days for both treatment groups to 0.7 (BIW/QW) and 1.1 (QW/QW); p </= 0.03 for each). No significant differences between the treatment groups were observed for any economic endpoint at any time point. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and PsA, etanercept treatment resulted in reducing job responsibility changes due to disease and in reducing sick time. Effective treatment of psoriasis and PsA may reduce missed work days

    The Effect of Sodium Hydroxide on Niobium Carbide Precipitates in Thermally Sensitised 20Cr-25Ni-Nb Austenitic Stainless Steel

    Niobium-stabilised austenitic stainless steel (20Cr-25Ni-Nb) has been immersed in sodium hydroxide, which is used as a corrosion inhibitor. The work shows how NbC precipitates may be degraded by use of pH 13 NaOH. Initial electrochemical measurements indicate that there is no benefit to this pretreatment as regards long-term corrosion inhibition, and post corrosion imaging shows the initiation of pitting corrosion at Nb-rich precipitates still present in the microstructure

    Radio Observations of the Hubble Deep Field South region: I. Survey Description and Initial Results

    This paper is the first of a series describing the results of the Australia Telescope Hubble Deep Field South (ATHDFS) radio survey. The survey was conducted at four wavelengths - 20, 11, 6, and 3 cm, over a 4-year period, and achieves an rms sensitivity of about 10 microJy at each wavelength. We describe the observations and data reduction processes, and present data on radio sources close to the centre of the HDF-S. We discuss in detail the properties of a subset of these sources. The sources include both starburst galaxies and galaxies powered by an active galactic nucleus, and range in redshift from 0.1 to 2.2. Some of them are characterised by unusually high radio-to-optical luminosities, presumably caused by dust extinction.Comment: Accepted by AJ. 32 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures.
