Radial Velocities of Newly Discovered Globular Clusters in NGC 5128
We present radial velocity measurements for 74 globular clusters (GCs) in the
nearby giant elliptical NGC 5128, of which 31 are newly discovered clusters.
All the GC candidates were taken from the list of possible new clusters given
in the Harris, Harris, & Geisler (2004) photometric survey. In addition to the
newly confirmed clusters, we identified 24 definite foreground stars and 31
probable background galaxies. From a combined list of 299 known GCs in NGC 5128
with measured radial velocities and metallicity-sensitive (C - T_1) photometric
indices, we construct a new metallicity distribution function (MDF) for the
cluster system. The MDF shows an approximately bimodal form, with centroids at
[Fe/H] = -1.46 and -0.53, and with nearly equal numbers of metal-poor and
metal-rich clusters in the two modes. However, there are many
intermediate-color clusters in the distribution, and the fainter clusters tend
to have a higher proportion of red clusters. These features of the MDF may
indicate a widespread age range within the cluster system as well as an
intrinsically broad metallicity spread.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables - accepted in Astronomical Journa
Two of These or Two of Those?
Symmetrically dividing neuroepithelial cells may produce two daughters that are both proliferating or both postmitotic, as highlighted by Zigman et al. in this issue of Neuron and Sanada and Tsai in a recent issue of Cell. Here, I will attempt to offer a simple explanation why these results may be so different
XASH genes promote neurogenesis in Xenopus embryos
Neural development in Drosophila is promoted by a family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors encoded within the Achaete Scute-Complex (AS-C). XASH-
3, a Xenopus homolog of the Drosophila AS-C genes, is expressed during neural induction within a portion of the dorsal ectoderm that gives rise to the neural plate and tube. Here, we show that XASH-3, when expressed with the promiscuous binding partner XE12, specifically activates the expression of neural genes in naive ectoderm, suggesting
that XASH-3 promotes neural development. Moreover, XASH-3/XE12 RNA injections into embryos lead to hypertrophy of the neural tube. Interestingly, XASH-3 misexpression
does not lead to the formation of ectopic neural tissue in ventral regions, suggesting that the domain of XASH proneural function is restricted in the embryo. In contrast to the neural inducer noggin, which permanently activates the NCAM gene, the activation of neural genes by XASH-3/XE12 is not stable in naive ectoderm, yet XASH-3/XE12 powerfully and stably activates NCAM, Neurofilament and type III β-tubulin gene expression in noggintreated ectoderm. These results show that the XASH-3 promotes neural development, and suggest that its activity depends on additional factors which are induced in ectoderm by factors such as noggin
New g'r'i'z' Photometry of the NGC 5128 Globular Cluster System
We present new photometry for 323 of the globular clusters in NGC 5128
(Centaurus A), measured for the first time in the filter system. The
color indices are calibrated directly to standard stars in the
system and are used to establish the fiducial mean colors for the blue and red
(low and high metallicity) globular cluster sequences. We also use
spectroscopically measured abundances to establish the conversion between the
most metallicity-sensitive colors (, ) and metallicity,
[Fe/H].Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted in A
The Globular Cluster Systems in the Coma Ellipticals. III: The Unique Case of IC 4051
Using archival \hst WFPC2 data, we derive the metallicity distribution,
luminosity function, and spatial structure of the globular cluster system
around IC 4051, a giant E galaxy on the outskirts of the Coma cluster core. The
metallicity distribution derived from the (V-I) colors has a mean [Fe/H] =
-0.3, a near-complete lack of metal-poor clusters, and only a small metallicity
gradient with radius; it may, however, have two roughly equal metallicity
subcomponents, centered at [Fe/H] ~ 0.0 and -1.0. The luminosity distribution
(GCLF) has the Gaussian-like form observed in all other giant E galaxies, with
a peak (turnover) at V = 27.8, consistent with a Coma distance of 100 Mpc. The
radial profiles of both the GCS and the halo light show an unusually steep
falloff which may indicate that the halo of this galaxy has been tidally
truncated. Lastly, the specific frequency of the GCS is remarkably large: we
find S_N = 11 +- 2, resembling the central cD-type galaxies even though IC 4051
is not a cD or brightest cluster elliptical. A formation model consistent with
most of the observations would be that this galaxy was subjected to removal of
a large fraction of its protogalactic gas shortly after its main phase of
globular cluster formation, probably by its first passage through the Coma
core. Since then, no significant additions due to accretions or mergers have
taken place.Comment: 24 pp. plus 13 Figures. Postscript file for the complete paper can

Ptf1a is expressed transiently in all types of amacrine cells in the embryonic zebrafish retina.
BACKGROUND: The vertebrate retina is composed of five major types of neurons: three excitatory (photoreceptors, bipolar cells and ganglion cells) and two inhibitory (horizontal and amacrine cells). The transcription factor Ptf1a (pancreas transcription factor 1a) is important for the normal development of the inhibitory retinal neurons. RESULTS: Using a transgenic Ptf1a:GFP reporter and in situ hybridization in the zebrafish retina, we show that ptf1a message is transiently expressed in all amacrine and horizontal cells within hours after the terminal division of multipotent progenitors at the apical surface of the retinal neuroepithelium, and remains on as these cells migrate to their final laminar location. The message then shuts off, but we can follow the stable Ptf1a:GFP protein for up to 120 hours post-fertilization. A variety of anatomically and neurochemically distinct subtypes of amacrine cells can already be distinguished at this embryonic time point. CONCLUSION: The timing of Ptf1a expression suggests that it is involved in the very early stages or steps in the differentiation of amacrine cells, which, due to the perdurance of the Ptf1a:GFP, can be seen to rapidly diversify into a large number of subtypes. This work sets the stage for future studies looking at genetic specification of amacrine subtypes.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'.
