Investigating Urban Community Needs: Service Learning from a Social Justice Perspective

    Get PDF
Homelessness, poverty, substance abuse, hunger, teen pregnancy, youth violence, and marginalization of the disabled are but a few of the complex social issues that continue to plague urban America. They are also issues that attract the attention of student service providers involved in service-learning programs across the country (Education Commission of the States, 1994). However, few of the higher education service-learning courses focus on the investigation of the needs of the individuals included in these groups in the urban community, and even fewer build service--learning projects around a model that is accountable for the results of the service experience on the service recipient (Maybach, 1995). The focus of the majority of research on effectiveness of service-learning projects has instead been on the growth of the student. Thus, despite the complexity of the issues of service, students are encouraged to engage in service provision without a clear understanding of how their service is affecting the communities around them. Without an accountability for or an understanding of the needs of the individuals in the urban community, the effects of service-learning projects may indeed be viewed as malevolent by the very individuals whose lives the service was intended to enhance, despite the best of good intentions. This article attempts to offer an alternative model of service learning, designed to enhance the practice through exploration of issues of oppression, individual voice, empowerment, and social justice

HYDRAULIC FORCE MODELING FOR RADIAL JET DRILLING

Radial jet drilling (RJD) is a proven stimulation method to increase reservoir contact quickly and affordably while utilizing existing infrastructure and wellbores. RJD exploits a niche within the industry by targeting marginal reservoirs, thin pay zones, heavy oil reservoirs, coal bed methane, low-permeability reservoirs, and old, conventional, low-producing reservoirs. Development of the RJD technology has led to a multi-orifice nozzle, which generates a substantial cutting force (i.e. jet impact force) to penetrate the formation rock and a propulsion force to advance the bit into the formation. Only a handful of previous studies focus on modeling propulsion force to provide reasonable predictions. However, the models require empirically determined parameters to provide an accurate prediction of the propulsion force. This thesis presents a generalized propulsion force model, based on mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations. The model utilizes the discharge coefficient for multi-orifice nozzles to determine the impact and propulsions force generated at each orifice. The predictions of the new model are compared with existing and new measurements and showed reasonable agreement. After validation, the model allows performing a parametric study for further optimization. The results of the parametric study presented extensively in the article can be a good reference for future nozzle designs and hydraulic force calculations for the RJD technology

Scandal Enforcement at the SEC: The Arc of the Option Backdating Investigations

We study the SEC’s allocation of enforcement resources in the wake of a salient public scandal. We focus on the SEC’s investigations of option backdating in the wake of numerous media articles on the practice of backdating. We find that the SEC shifted its mix of investigations significantly toward backdating investigations and away from investigations involving other accounting issues. We test the hypothesis that SEC pursued more marginal investigations into backdating at the expense of pursuing more egregious accounting issues. Our event study of stock market reactions to the initial disclosure of backdating investigations shows that those reactions declined over our sample period. We also find that later backdating investigations are less likely to target individuals and less likely to be accompanied by a parallel criminal investigation. Looking at the consequences of the SEC’s backdating investigations, later investigations were more likely to be terminated or produce no monetary penalties. We find that the magnitude of the option backdating accounting errors diminished over time relative to other accounting errors that attracted SEC investigations
