    Mark 3 correlator hardware and software

    The Mark 3 correlator system is described in some detail. The correlator system is based on a modular philosophy. Each correlator module independently processes the data from one track pair. Therefore, 28 modules are necessary to complete a full one baseline processor and 84 modules for a full 3 baseline processor. Each correlator module has two interfaces: (1) data and clock from each of the two tracks to be correlated and (2) Computer Automated Measurement and Control (CAMAC) dataway interface to the computer. The processor is organized around the IEEE CAMAC standard architecture, housing 15 correlator modules in each of 6 crates. This allows one pass processing of a full 3 baseline 28 track observation or a 6 baseline (4 station) 14 track observation. The correlator architecture allows easy expansion for up to 8 stations. The computer system is an HP 1000 system utilizing a 16 bit minicomputer with disc and tape peripherals. The processing software is also organized in a modular fashion with many independent but cooperative programs controlling the operation of the Mark 3 processor. Processing time through the correlator is normally real time or faster, with graphics displays providing real time monitor and control of the processing operation

    In this exposition, we show that a Hamiltonian is always constant on a compact invariant connected subset which lies in a Lagrangian graph provided that the Hamiltonian and the graph are smooth enough.     Bulk Comptonization spectra in blazars

    We study the time dependent spectra produced via the bulk Compton process by a cold, relativistic shell of plasma moving (and accelerating) along the jet of a blazar, scattering on external photons emitted by the accretion disc and reprocessed in the broad line region. Bulk Comptonization of disc photons is shown to yield a spectral component contributing in the far UV band, and would then be currently unobservable. On the contrary, the bulk Comptonization of broad line photons may yield a significant feature in the soft X-ray band. Such a feature is time-dependent and transient, and dominates over the non thermal continuum only when: a) the dissipation occurs close to, but within, the broad line region; b) other competing processes, like the synchrotron self-Compton emission, yield a negligible flux in the X-ray band. The presence of a bulk Compton component may account for the X-ray properties of high redshift blazars that show a flattening (and possibly a hump) in the soft X-rays, previously interpreted as due to intrinsic absorption. We discuss why the conditions leading to a detectable bulk Compton feature might be met only occasionally in high redshift blazars, concluding that the absence of such a feature in the spectra of most blazars should not be taken as evidence against matter--dominated relativistic jets.     An investigation was made to determine to what extent the rates of combustion in a compression-ignition engine can be controlled by varying the rates of fuel injection. The tests showed that the double-stem valve operated satisfactorily under all normal injection conditions; the rate of injection has a definite effect on the rate of combustion; the engine performance with the double-stem valve was inferior to that obtained with a single-stem valve; and the control of injection rates permitted by an injection valve of two stages of discharge is not sufficient to effect the desired rates of combustion

    Development of mid-infrared solid state lasers for spaceborne lidar

    Laser performance of Ho(3+):Tm(3+):Cr(3+):YAG crystals was investigated under both Cr:GSAG laser and flashlamp pumping. A flashlamp pumped Cr:GSAG laser was built to simulate high power quasi-CW laser diode pumping of a 2.1 micrometer holmium laser. The 2.1 micrometer output laser energy exceeded more than 14 mJ, the highest value reported to date under laser pumping near 785 nm. This was obtained in a pulse length of nearly 650 microsec from a 3 x 3 mm Ho:Tm:Cr:YAG rod by using the flashlamp-pumped Cr:CSAG laser as a pumping source at the diode laser wavelength, 785 micrometers. In addition, Ho:Tm:Cr:YAG crystals with various Tm(3+) concentrations were evaluated for flashlamp-pumped normal mode and Q-switched 2.1 micrometer laser operations under a wide variety of experimental conditions in order to understand internal dynamic processes among the ions and to determine an optimum lasing condition. An increase of the laser slope efficiency was observed with the increase of the Tm(3+) concentration from 2.5 to 4.5 atomic percent. The thermal dependence of the laser performance was also investigated. Q-switched laser output energies corresponding to nearly 100 percent of the normal-mode laser energies were obtained in a strong single spike of 200 ns pulse length by optimizing the opening time of a lithium niobate Q-switch

    A computer automated data acquisition system for atmospheric emittance, and global solar, downwelled diffuse solar, and direct solar irradiances is discussed. Hourly-integrated global solar and atmospheric emitted radiances were measured continuously from February 1981 and hourly-integrated diffuse solar and direct solar irradiances were measured continuously from October 1981. One-minute integrated data are available for each of these components from February 1982. The results of the correlation of global insolation with fractional cloud cover for the first year's data set. A February data set, composed of one-minute integrated global insolation and direct solar irradiance, cloud cover fractions, meteorological data from nearby weather stations, and GOES East satellite radiometric data, was collected to test the theoretical model of satellite radiometric data correlation and develop the cloud dependence for the local measurement site
