The H alpha Galaxy Survey VI. Star-forming companions of nearby field galaxies
We present a search for star-forming satellite galaxies that are close enough
to their parent galaxies to be considered analogues of the Magellanic Clouds.
Our search technique relied on the detection of the satellites in
continuum-subtracted narrow-band H alpha imaging of the central galaxies, which
removes most of the background and foreground line-of-sight companions, thus
giving a high probability that we are detecting true satellites. The search was
performed for 119 central galaxies at distances between 20 and 40 Mpc, although
spatial incompleteness means that we have effectively searched 53 full
satellite-containing volumes. We find only 9 probable star-forming satellites,
around 9 different central galaxies, and 2 possible satellites. After
incompleteness correction, this is equivalent to 0.17/0.21 satellites per
central galaxy. The Small Magellanic Cloud is just below the median values of
both star formation rate and R-band luminosity of the 9 probable satellites.
The Large Magellanic Cloud, however, has a higher R-band luminosity than any of
the 9 and is only exceeded in star formation rate by the one satellite that
appears to be undergoing a tidally-induced starburst. Thus the Milky Way
appears to be quite unusual, both in having two star-forming satellite galaxies
and in the high luminosity of the Large Magellanic Cloud.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in A&
The Outer Disks of Early-Type Galaxies. I. Surface-Brightness Profiles of Barred Galaxies
We present a study of 66 barred, early-type (S0-Sb) disk galaxies, focused on
the disk surface brightness profile outside the bar region and the nature of
Freeman Type I and II profiles, their origins, and their possible relation to
disk truncations. This paper discusses the data and their reduction, outlines
our classification system, and presents -band profiles and classifications
for all galaxies in the sample.
The profiles are derived from a variety of different sources, including the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (Data Release 5). For about half of the galaxies, we
have profiles derived from more than one telescope; this allows us to check the
stability and repeatability of our profile extraction and classification. The
vast majority of the profiles are reliable down to levels of mu_R ~ 27 mag
arcsec^-2; in exceptional cases, we can trace profiles down to mu_R > 28. We
can typically follow disk profiles out to at least 1.5 times the traditional
optical radius R_25; for some galaxies, we find light extending to ~ 3 R_25.
We classify the profiles into three main groups: Type I (single-exponential),
Type II (down-bending), and Type III (up-bending). The frequencies of these
types are approximately 27%, 42%, and 24%, respectively, plus another 6% which
are combinations of Types II and III. We further classify Type II profiles by
where the break falls in relation to the bar length, and in terms of the
postulated mechanisms for breaks at large radii ("classical trunction" of star
formation versus the influence of the Outer Lindblad Resonance of the bar). We
also classify the Type III profiles by the probable morphology of the outer

The Influence of Objectively Measured Physical Activity During Pregnancy on Maternal and Birth Outcomes in Urban Black South African Women.
Objectives Research indicates the beneficial effects of physical activity during pregnancy on maternal health, although controversy still exists regarding its influence on birth outcomes. Little research has been done to objectively measure physical activity during pregnancy in black African women from low-to-middle income countries. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between physical activity and maternal and birth outcomes in this unique population. Methods This observational, longitudinal study assessed total physical activity using a hip-mounted triaxial accelerometer at 14-18 weeks (second trimester, n = 120) and 29-33 weeks (third trimester, n = 90) gestation. Physical activity is expressed as gravity-based acceleration units (mg). Maternal outcomes included both weight and weight gain at 29-33 weeks gestation. Birth outcomes included gestational age, birth weight, ponderal index and Apgar score, measured within 48 h of delivery. Results There was a significant decline in physical activity from the second to the third trimester (12.8 ± 4.1 mg vs. 9.7 ± 3.6 mg, p ≤ 0.01). Physical activity at 29-33 weeks as well as a change in PA was inversely associated with weight change at 29-33 weeks (β = - 0.24; 95% CI - 0.49; - 0.00; p = 0.05 and β = - 0.36; 95% CI - 0.62; - 0.10; p = 0.01, respectively). No significant associations were found between physical activity and birth outcomes. Conclusions for Practice Physical activity during pregnancy may be an effective method to control gestational weight gain, whilst presenting no adverse risk for fetal development, in women from a low-income urban setting.This work is based on the research supported in part by the National Research Foundation of South Africa for the Grant Nos.: 87944 and 98248 ... How to Educate Entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship education has two purposes: To improve students’ entrepreneurial skills and to provide impetus to those suited to entrepreneurship while discouraging the rest. While entrepreneurship education helps students to make a vocational decision its effects may conflict for those not suited to entrepreneurship. This study shows that vocational and the skill formation effects of entrepreneurship education can be identified empirically by drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This is embedded in a structural equation model which we estimate and test using a robust 2SLS estimator. We find that the attitudinal factors posited by the Theory of Planned Behavior are positively correlated with students’ entrepreneurial intentions. While conflicting effects of vocational and skill directed course content are observed in some individuals, overall these types of content are complements. This finding contradicts previous results in the literature. We reconcile the conflicting findings and discuss implications for the design of entrepreneurship courses
The Multi-Object, Fiber-Fed Spectrographs for SDSS and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey
We present the design and performance of the multi-object fiber spectrographs
for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and their upgrade for the Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). Originally commissioned in Fall 1999
on the 2.5-m aperture Sloan Telescope at Apache Point Observatory, the
spectrographs produced more than 1.5 million spectra for the SDSS and SDSS-II
surveys, enabling a wide variety of Galactic and extra-galactic science
including the first observation of baryon acoustic oscillations in 2005. The
spectrographs were upgraded in 2009 and are currently in use for BOSS, the
flagship survey of the third-generation SDSS-III project. BOSS will measure
redshifts of 1.35 million massive galaxies to redshift 0.7 and Lyman-alpha
absorption of 160,000 high redshift quasars over 10,000 square degrees of sky,
making percent level measurements of the absolute cosmic distance scale of the
Universe and placing tight constraints on the equation of state of dark energy.
The twin multi-object fiber spectrographs utilize a simple optical layout
with reflective collimators, gratings, all-refractive cameras, and
state-of-the-art CCD detectors to produce hundreds of spectra simultaneously in
two channels over a bandpass covering the near ultraviolet to the near
infrared, with a resolving power R = \lambda/FWHM ~ 2000. Building on proven
heritage, the spectrographs were upgraded for BOSS with volume-phase
holographic gratings and modern CCD detectors, improving the peak throughput by
nearly a factor of two, extending the bandpass to cover 360 < \lambda < 1000
nm, and increasing the number of fibers from 640 to 1000 per exposure. In this
paper we describe the original SDSS spectrograph design and the upgrades

The density and peculiar velocity fields of nearby galaxies
We review the quantitative science that can be and has been done with
redshift and peculiar velocity surveys of galaxies in the nearby universe.
After a brief background setting the cosmological context for this work, the
first part of this review focuses on redshift surveys. The practical issues of
how redshift surveys are carried out, and how one turns a distribution of
galaxies into a smoothed density field, are discussed. Then follows a
description of major redshift surveys that have been done, and the local
cosmography out to 8,000 km/s that they have mapped. We then discuss in some
detail the various quantitative cosmological tests that can be carried out with
redshift data. The second half of this review concentrates on peculiar velocity
studies, beginning with a thorough review of existing techniques. After
discussing the various biases which plague peculiar velocity work, we survey
quantitative analyses done with peculiar velocity surveys alone, and finally
with the combination of data from both redshift and peculiar velocity surveys.
The data presented rule out the standard Cold Dark Matter model, although
several variants of Cold Dark Matter with more power on large scales fare
better. All the data are consistent with the hypothesis that the initial
density field had a Gaussian distribution, although one cannot rule out broad
classes of non-Gaussian models. Comparison of the peculiar velocity and density
fields constrains the Cosmological Density Parameter. The results here are
consistent with a flat universe with mild biasing of the galaxies relative to

Duas teorias, internamente, consistentes com as oportunidades empreendedoras são: teoria da criação e teoria da descoberta- as quais serão descritas. Enquanto, será sempre possível, descrever a formação de uma oportunidade particular, como exemplo, de um processo da descoberta ou da criação de oportunidade, estas duas teorias têm implicações importantes para a eficácia de uma variedade ampla de ações empreendedoras em contextos diferentes. As implicações destas teorias para sete destas ações serão descritas, acompanhadas de uma discussão sobre algumas das implicações teóricas mais amplas destas duas teorias para os campos do empreendimento e do gerenciamento estratégico
Tephrochronology
Tephrochronology is the use of primary, characterized tephras or cryptotephras as chronostratigraphic marker beds to connect and synchronize geological, paleoenvironmental, or archaeological sequences or events, or soils/paleosols, and, uniquely, to transfer relative or numerical ages or dates to them using stratigraphic and age information together with mineralogical and geochemical compositional data, especially from individual glass-shard analyses, obtained for the tephra/cryptotephra deposits. To function as an age-equivalent correlation and chronostratigraphic dating tool, tephrochronology may be undertaken in three steps: (i) mapping and describing tephras and determining their stratigraphic relationships, (ii) characterizing tephras or cryptotephras in the laboratory, and (iii) dating them using a wide range of geochronological methods. Tephrochronology is also an important tool in volcanology, informing studies on volcanic petrology, volcano eruption histories and hazards, and volcano-climate forcing.
