    Student Experiences During the 1954-1955 Merger of Harris and Stowe Teachers Colleges

    This project is a historiography of the merger of Harris and Stowe Teachers Colleges following the Brown v. Board of Education U.S. 483 (USSC 1954) Supreme Court decision. In September 1954, these two racially segregated teachers colleges, both operated by the St. Louis Board of Education, were merged on the Harris Teachers College campus. This merger represented the first instance of desegregated public education in the city of St. Louis. Fourteen alumni who attended the two colleges during this period participated in semi-structured qualitative interviews, recalling their experiences during the merger. This study also involved the collection of data archived during this period as well as an analysis of contemporary newspaper accounts. The study presents the merger in both its historical and personal contexts. Historically, this merger symbolizes the beginning of desegregated public education in St. Louis. On a personal level, this study tells the story of the Harris-Stowe merger from the perspective of the students involved. The data from this project suggest three major findings: 1) the merger was free of animosity and proceeded without incident; 2) despite the smooth physical desegregation, little, if any, significant social integration was achieved between the Black and White students; and 3) the students from Stowe and the students from Harris experienced the merger in substantively different ways.     Strategic Behaviour and Leadership Patterns of Modern Chief Justices

    This study uses strategic behaviour, leadership change, and feminist theories to examine patterns of judicial activity by the three post-Charter chief justices of the Supreme Court of Canada. Building on prior scholarship, we use various methods to examine patterns of majority voting, dissenting activity, opinion writing, ideological voting, and panel size across the 1973 to 2014 period. While Chief Justices Lamer and Dickson exhibited clear patterns of task leadership, we find strong evidence of strategic change by Chief Justice McLachlin following her elevation to chief. She moved from a prolific dissenter as a puisne justice to a chief who exhibited behaviour of both a task leader and a social leader, which scholars see as highly uncommon. Her efforts to solidify her central role as a collegial leader within her own court, which took place during a period of increasing panel sizes and a shrinking court docket, are remarkable

    Recent developments in the measurement of precision electroweak measurements are summarised, notably new results on the mass of the top quark and mass and width of the W boson. Predictions of the Standard Model are compared to the experimental results which are used to constrain the input parameters of the Standard Model, in particular the mass of the Higgs boson. The agreement between measurements and expectations from theory is discussed.     Deep learning assessment of breast terminal duct lobular unit involution: Towards automated prediction of breast cancer risk

    Terminal duct lobular unit (TDLU) involution is the regression of milk-producing structures in the breast. Women with less TDLU involution are more likely to develop breast cancer. A major bottleneck in studying TDLU involution in large cohort studies is the need for labor-intensive manual assessment of TDLUs. We developed a computational pathology solution to automatically capture TDLU involution measures. Whole slide images (WSIs) of benign breast biopsies were obtained from the Nurses\u27 Health Study. A set of 92 WSIs was annotated for acini, TDLUs and adipose tissue to train deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models for detection of acini, and segmentation of TDLUs and adipose tissue. These networks were integrated into a single computational method to capture TDLU involution measures including number of TDLUs per tissue area, median TDLU span and median number of acini per TDLU. We validated our method on 40 additional WSIs by comparing with manually acquired measures. Our CNN models detected acini with an F1 score of 0.73±0.07, and segmented TDLUs and adipose tissue with Dice scores of 0.84±0.13 and 0.87±0.04, respectively. The inter-observer ICC scores for manual assessments on 40 WSIs of number of TDLUs per tissue area, median TDLU span, and median acini count per TDLU were 0.71, 0.81 and 0.73, respectively. Intra-observer reliability was evaluated on 10/40 WSIs with ICC scores of \u3e0.8. Inter-observer ICC scores between automated results and the mean of the two observers were: 0.80 for number of TDLUs per tissue area, 0.57 for median TDLU span, and 0.80 for median acini count per TDLU. TDLU involution measures evaluated by manual and automated assessment were inversely associated with age and menopausal status. We developed a computational pathology method to measure TDLU involution. This technology eliminates the labor-intensiveness and subjectivity of manual TDLU assessment, and can be applied to future breast cancer risk studies

    The technogenic Clarc of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) from the upper soil layer and the forage plants in an industrially polluted region, so as the Pb and Cd input in the organism of young lambs and kid by the synthesis of secondary biological production have been investigated. For the synthesis of 1 kg secondary production in the organism of lambs, the input of Pb with the food and drinking water is 6.44 mg and 2.46 mg Cd and in the kid- organism- 21.41 mg Pb and 5.29 mg Cd. The obtained production in conditions of increased technogenic Clarc is with higher content of Pb and Cd, according the maximal admissible levels (EC- regulation 466/2001).Изследвани са технологичният кларк на олово и кадмий в горе н слой на почва и фуражи в индустриално замърсен район, както и постъпленията на олово и кадмий в организма на млади агнета и ярета при синтеза на вторична биологична продукция. За синтеза на 1 kg вторична продукция при агнета, постъпленията от фуража и питейната вода са 6,44 mg олово и 2,46 mg кадмий а в организма на яретата – съответно 21,41 mg олово и 5,29 mg кадмий. Получената в условията на повишен техногенен кларк продукция е с по високо съдържание на олово и кадмий спрямо пределнодопустимите концинтрации (EC regulation 466/2001)
