The Power of Person-Centered Planning
The purpose of this article is to awaken the reader to the possibilities which exist when working on Person-Centered Planning and the individual with intellectual disabilities, specifically, Down syndrome. Although Person-Centered Planning has been in existence for more than two decades, it is viewed in a new way through the experiences documented in this article by individuals, and the use of a new format which includes photography, the computer, and a guide for what questions to ask and how to ask them. The central question of what caregivers can do once the Person-Centered Plan is enacted is posed as well. The Person-Centered Plan is seen as not disability-specific, but a capacity building process in which the personnel involved are key to linking the individual to the community in order for dreams and personal goals to be realized
Ontogenetic and temporal variability in the fat content and fatty acid composition of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) from the Bay of Fundy, Canada
Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) is an ecologically and
economically valuable species in many food webs, yet surprisingly little is known about the variation in the nutritional quality of these fish. Atlantic herring collected from 2005 through 2008 from the Bay of Fundy, Canada, were examined for variability in their nutritional quality by using total lipid content (n=889) and fatty acid composition (n=551) as proxies for nutritional value. A
significant positive relationship was found between fish length and total lipid content. Atlantic herring also had significantly different fatty acid signatures by age. Fish from 2005 had significantly lower total lipid content than fish from 2006 through 2008, and all years had significantly different fatty acid signatures. Summer
fish were significantly fatter than winter fish and had significantly different fatty acid signatures. For all comparisons (ontogenetic, annual, and seasonal) percent concentrations of omega-3, -6, and long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids were the most important for distinguishing between the fatty acid signatures of fish. This study underscores the importance of quantifying variation in prey quality synoptically with prey quantity
in food webs over ontogenetic and temporal scales when evaluating the effect of prey nutritional quality on
predators and on modeling trophic dynamics
Super-absorbent dressings: how do they perform in vitro?
The free swell and absorption capacity under compression of six wound dressings that are indicated for moderately to highly exuding wounds was investigated. Measuring in vitro the absorptive capacity and retention under compression is important in terms of clinical efficacy and efficiency. This in vitro comparative study demonstrated that sorbion sachet EXTRA had the highest free swell capacity of the six test dressings and absorbed more than twice the volume (126%) of the test solution than its nearest competitor. When measuring capacity under compression, sorbion sachet EXTRA absorbed 88% more fluid than the nearest competitor
The difficulties of systematic reviews
The need for robust evidence to support conservation actions has driven the adoption of systematic approaches to research synthesis in ecology. However, applying systematic review to complex or open questions remains challenging, and this task is becoming more difficult as the quantity of scientific literature increases. We drew on the science of linguistics for guidance as to why the process of identifying and sorting information during systematic review remains so labor intensive, and to provide potential solutions. Several linguistic properties of peer-reviewed corpora-including nonrandom selection of review topics, small-world properties of semantic networks, and spatiotemporal variation in word meaning-greatly increase the effort needed to complete the systematic review process. Conversely, the resolution of these semantic complexities is a common motivation for narrative reviews, but this process is rarely enacted with the rigor applied during linguistic analysis. Therefore, linguistics provides a unifying framework for understanding some key challenges of systematic review and highlights 2 useful directions for future research. First, in cases where semantic complexity generates barriers to synthesis, ecologists should consider drawing on existing methods-such as natural language processing or the construction of research thesauri and ontologies-that provide tools for mapping and resolving that complexity. These tools could help individual researchers classify research material in a more robust manner and provide valuable guidance for future researchers on that topic. Second, a linguistic perspective highlights that scientific writing is a rich resource worthy of detailed study, an observation that can sometimes be lost during the search for data during systematic review or meta-analysis. For example, mapping semantic networks can reveal redundancy and complementarity among scientific concepts, leading to new insights and research questions. Consequently, wider adoption of linguistic approaches may facilitate improved rigor and richness in research synthesis.Australian Research Council. Grant Number: fl12010010
Reliability and validity of a domain-specific last 7-d sedentary time questionnaire
Purpose: The objective of this study is to examine test-retest reliability, criterion validity, and absolute agreement of a self-report, last 7-d sedentary behavior questionnaire (SIT-Q-7d), which assesses total daily sedentary time as an aggregate of sitting/lying down in five domains (meals, transportation, occupation, nonoccupational screen time, and other sedentary time). Dutch (DQ) and English (EQ) versions of the questionnaire were examined.
Methods: Fifty-one Flemish adults (ages 39.4 +/- 11.1 yr) wore a thigh accelerometer (activPAL3 (TM)) and simultaneously kept a domain log for 7 d. The DQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.3 wk). Thigh-acceleration sedentary time was log annotated to create comparable domain-specific and total sedentary time variables. Four hundred two English adults (ages 49.6 +/- 7.3 yr) wore a combined accelerometer and HR monitor (Actiheart (R)) for 6 d to objectively measure total sedentary time. The EQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.4 wk). In both samples, the questionnaire reference frame overlapped with the criterion measure administration period. All participants had five or more valid days of criterion data, including one or more weekend day.
Results: Test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (95% CI)) was fair to good for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.68 (0.50-0.81); EQ: 0.53 (0.44-0.62)) and poor to excellent for domain-specific sedentary time (DQ: from 0.36 (0.10-0.57) (meals) to 0.66 (0.46-0.79) (occupation); EQ: from 0.45 (0.35-0.54) (other sedentary time) to 0.76 (0.71-0.81) (meals)). For criterion validity (Spearman rho), significant correlations were found for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.52; EQ: 0.22; all P <0.001). Compared with domain-specific criterion variables (DQ), modest-to-strong correlations were found for domain-specific sedentary time (from 0.21 (meals) to 0.76 (P < 0.001) (screen time)). The questionnaire generally overestimated sedentary time compared with criterion measures.
Conclusion: The SIT-Q-7d appears to be a useful tool for ranking individuals in large-scale observational studies examining total and domain-specific sitting
Estimation of Physical Activity Energy Expenditure during Free-Living from Wrist Accelerometry in UK Adults.
BACKGROUND: Wrist-worn accelerometers are emerging as the most common instrument for measuring physical activity in large-scale epidemiological studies, though little is known about the relationship between wrist acceleration and physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE). METHODS: 1695 UK adults wore two devices simultaneously for six days; a combined sensor and a wrist accelerometer. The combined sensor measured heart rate and trunk acceleration, which was combined with a treadmill test to yield a signal of individually-calibrated PAEE. Multi-level regression models were used to characterise the relationship between the two time-series, and their estimations were evaluated in an independent holdout sample. Finally, the relationship between PAEE and BMI was described separately for each source of PAEE estimate (wrist acceleration models and combined-sensing). RESULTS: Wrist acceleration explained 44-47% between-individual variance in PAEE, with RMSE between 34-39 J•min-1•kg-1. Estimations agreed well with PAEE in cross-validation (mean bias [95% limits of agreement]: 0.07 [-70.6:70.7]) but overestimated in women by 3% and underestimated in men by 4%. Estimation error was inversely related to age (-2.3 J•min-1•kg-1 per 10y) and BMI (-0.3 J•min-1•kg-1 per kg/m2). Associations with BMI were similar for all PAEE estimates (approximately -0.08 kg/m2 per J•min-1•kg-1). CONCLUSIONS: A strong relationship exists between wrist acceleration and PAEE in free-living adults, such that irrespective of the objective method of PAEE assessment, a strong inverse association between PAEE and BMI was observed
Circular and linear mitochondrial genomes in cytoplasmic male sterile maize [abstract]
Abstract only availableCytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a maternally inherited condition in which a plant has an inability to produce viable pollen. It is usually due to the production of a toxic chimeric protein within the mitochondria during the maturation of pollen grains. In maize (Zea mays), there are three types of CMS: CMS-T, CMS-C and CMS-S. The S-type of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS-S) in maize is associated with the expression of a rearranged mitochondrial DNA region. This CMS-S-specific region includes two co-transcribed chimeric open reading frames, orf355 and orf77. The nuclear restorer-of-fertility gene, Rf3, cleaves all transcripts containing both orfs, including the CMS-S-specific linear 1.6 kb mRNA; this results in male fertility. The Lancaster Surecrop-derived inbred line A619 carries a different and weaker restorer called Rf9. Fertility restoration by Rf3 and Rf9 was compared for their effects upon the CMS-associated region of mitochondrial DNA. Unlike Rf3, Rf9 affects the organization of the CMS-S-specific region. It appears to do this by affecting recombination between linear "S" plasmids and the CMS-S-specific region of the main mitochondrial genome, which produces a linear end from which transcripts for the 1.6 kb mRNA are initiated. By reducing the amount of recombination, Rf9 reduces the amount of linear template available for transcribing the S-associated 1.6 kb RNA. A reduction in this transcript is associated with an increase in pollen survival. We have studied the effects of the two restorer-of-fertility genes from several different inbred lines on the amounts of integrated and linearized orf355/orf77 genes within CMS-S mtDNA.MU Monsanto Undergraduate Research Fellowshi
Socioemotional Selectivity and Psychological Health in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients and Caregivers: A Longitudinal, Dyadic Analysis
Objective: Socioemotional selectivity theory predicts that as the end of life approaches, goals and resources that provide immediate, hedonic reward become more important than those that provide delayed rewards. This study tested whether these goal domains differentially affected psychological health in the context of marital dyads in which one partner had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a life-limiting disease.
Design: ALS patients (N = 102) being treated in three multidisciplinary clinics and their spouses (N = 100) reported their loneliness, financial worry and psychological health every 3 months for up to 18 months.
Main Outcome Measure: Psychological health composite.
Results: In multilevel dyadic models, patients and spouses had similar levels of financial worry and loneliness. Both patients and spouses had worse psychological health with higher loneliness, but only spouses had worse psychological health with higher financial worry. Significant interactions with age and disease severity indicated that older spouses were more affected by loneliness than were younger spouses, and patients with less severe disease were more affected by financial worry than patients with more severe disease.
Conclusion: The results provide good support for socioemotional selectivity theory’s implications for psychological health in a strong test of the theory
Long-term physical activity: an exogenous risk factor for sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
OBJECTIVES: To conduct a geographically defined, UK-based case-control study, to examine any association between physical activity (PA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). METHODS: A novel historical PA questionnaire was designed, validated, and subsequently administered in individual face-to-face interviews of 175 newly diagnosed sporadic ALS cases and 317 age- and sex-matched community controls. Historical PA energy expenditure and time spent in vigorous-intensity PA were derived from questionnaire data and compared between cases and controls. RESULTS: Participation in an extra 10kJ/kg/day of PA (equivalent to approximately 45minutes brisk walking) was consistently associated with an increased risk of ALS, with the strongest association observed for adulthood exercise-related PA (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.10-1.97). An extra 10mins/day of vigorous PA was also associated with the odds of ALS (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1·01-1·05). Results were slightly attenuated following adjustment for smoking and educational attainment. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate a positive association between ALS and PA participation using a specifically designed and validated historical PA questionnaire. Despite the well-established health benefits of PA, a high activity lifestyle may also be associated with elevated risk of ALS. Large-scale prospective studies in the future may help to confirm this association. This study was funded by a Medical Research Council/Motor Neurone Disease Association Lady Edith Wolfson Fellowship. This is the final version of the article.
