Baryon Junction Stopping at the SPS and RHIC via HIJING/B
Baryon stopping at the SPS and RHIC energies is calculated by introducing a
new baryon junction mechanism into HIJING. The exchange of a baryon junction,
according to Regge phenomenology, leads to a cosh(y/2) rapidity dependence and
an s^(-1/4) energy dependence of the inclusive baryon cross section. This
baryon junction dynamics also leads naturally to enhanced p_T broadening in pA

Photon-photon correlations and entanglement in doped photonic crystals
We consider a photonic crystal (PC) doped with four-level atoms whose
intermediate transition is coupled near-resonantly with a photonic band-gap
edge. We show that two photons, each coupled to a different atomic transition
in such atoms, can manifest strong phase or amplitude correlations: One photon
can induce a large phase shift on the other photon or trigger its absorption
and thus operate as an ultrasensitive nonlinear photon-switch. These features
allow the creation of entangled two-photon states and have unique advantages
over previously considered media: (i) no control lasers are needed; (ii) the
system parameters can be chosen to cause full two-photon entanglement via
absorption; (iii) a number of PCs can be combined in a network.Comment: Modified, expanded text; added reference
Towards medicinal tea from untapped Namibian Ganoderma: Phenolics and in vitro antioxidant activity of wild and cultivated mushrooms?
Ganoderma is a genus of mushrooms that is prized in developed nations, especially those in Asia, due to its health-promoting properties, which are attributed to bioactive compounds such as phenolics. However, in developing countries, particularly in Africa, Ganoderma mushrooms are untapped and are barely identified. In this study, we identified Ganoderma species collected from different host trees in the wild in Namibia, cultivated them on one substrate and determined their water absorption and solubility indices. Total phenolics (TP), total flavonoids (TF), condensed tannins (CT) and in vitro antioxidant activity (AA) were determined in hot water infusions made from wild and cultivated Ganoderma mushrooms. FolinâCiocalteu, aluminium chloride, vanillin-HCl, and DPPH assay methods were used to determine TP, TF, CT and AA, respectively. Wild species had 6.12â11.70% moisture, 1.91â5.32% ash, 11.55â24.40 (g of absorbed water/g of dry sample) water absorption index, 3.60â24.10% water solubility index, 18.37â44.78 (mg GAE/g of sample) TP, 0.09â1.67 (mg QE/g of sample) TF, 2.97â6.37 (mg CAE/g of sample) CT and 40.8â49.3% AA. Cultivated species had 9.64â13.45% moisture, 2.34â6.20% ash, 13.55â28.30 water absorption index, 6.40â25.35% water solubility index, 36.70â52.73 (mg GAE/g of sample) TP, 0.41â0.86 (mg QE/g of sample) TF, 11.38â15.29 (mg CAE/g of sample) CT and 53.6â63.7% AA. Infusions prepared from cultivated Ganoderma species had higher levels of TP, CT and AA, but lower levels of TF than those prepared from wild Ganoderma species, suggesting that they have potential as nutraceuticals.Significance:âą The identification and confirmation of highly prized Lingzhi âmushrooms of immortalityâ in Namibia highlights the presence of this untapped resource in Africa that is potentially worth billions of dollars. âą The cultivation and phenolic content of this high-value medicinal mushroom have been demonstrated.âą Cultivation could lead to sustainable utilisation and employment creation in developing countries which suffer from unemployment rates of at least 30%
Polariton Analysis of a Four-Level Atom Strongly Coupled to a Cavity Mode
We present a complete analytical solution for a single four-level atom
strongly coupled to a cavity field mode and driven by external coherent laser
fields. The four-level atomic system consists of a three-level subsystem in an
EIT configuration, plus an additional atomic level; this system has been
predicted to exhibit a photon blockade effect. The solution is presented in
terms of polaritons. An effective Hamiltonian obtained by this procedure is
analyzed from the viewpoint of an effective two-level system, and the dynamic
Stark splitting of dressed states is discussed. The fluorescence spectrum of
light exiting the cavity mode is analyzed and relevant transitions identified.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure
A spliced latency-associated VZV transcript maps antisense to the viral transactivator gene
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), an alphaherpesvirus, establishes lifelong latent infection in the neurons of >90% humans worldwide, reactivating in one-third to cause shingles, debilitating pain and stroke. How VZV maintains latency remains unclear. Here, using ultra-deep virus-enriched RNA sequencing of latently infected human trigeminal ganglia (TG), we demonstrate the consistent expression of a spliced VZV mRNA, antisense to VZV open reading frame 61 (ORF61). The spliced VZV latency-associated transcript (VLT) is expressed in human TG neurons and encodes a protein with late kinetics in productively infected cells in vitro and in shingles skin lesions. Whereas multiple alternatively spliced VLT isoforms (VLTly) are expressed during lytic infection, a single unique VLT isoform, which specifically suppresses ORF61 gene expression in co-transfected cells, predominates in latently VZV-infected human TG. The discovery of VLT links VZV with the other better characterized human and animal neurotropic alphaherpesviruses and provides insights into VZV latency
Reduced relative volume in motor and attention regions in developmental coordination disorder: a voxel-based morphometry study.
Background and Objectives: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a prevalent childhood movement disorder, impacting the ability to perform movement skills at an age appropriate level. Although differences in grey matter (GM) volumes have been found in related developmental disorders, no such evidence has been linked with DCD to date. This cross-sectional study assessed structural brain differences in children with and without DCD. Methods: High-resolution structural images were acquired from 44 children aged 7.8â12 years, including 22 children with DCD (â€16th percentile on MABC-2; no ADHD/ASD), and 22 typically developing controls (â„20th percentile on MABC-2). Structural voxel-based morphology analysis was performed to determine group differences in focal GM volumes. Results: Children with DCD were found to have significant, large, right lateralised reductions in grey matter volume in the medial and middle frontal, and superior frontal gyri compared to controls. The addition of motor proficiency as a covariate explained the between-group GM volume differences, suggesting that GM volumes in motor regions are reflective of the level of motor proficiency. A positive correlation between motor proficiency and relative GM volume was also identified in the left posterior cingulate and precuneus. Conclusions: GM volume reductions in premotor frontal regions may underlie the motor difficulties characteristic of DCD. It is possible that intervention approaches targeting motor planning, attention, and executive functioning processes associated with the regions of reduced GM volume may result in functional improvements in children with DCD
A device for feasible fidelity, purity, Hilbert-Schmidt distance and entanglement witness measurements
A generic model of measurement device which is able to directly measure
commonly used quantum-state characteristics such as fidelity, overlap, purity
and Hilbert-Schmidt distance for two general uncorrelated mixed states is
proposed. In addition, for two correlated mixed states, the measurement
realizes an entanglement witness for Werner's separability criterion. To
determine these observables, the estimation only one parameter - the visibility
of interference, is needed. The implementations in cavity QED, trapped ion and

Decoding the Architecture of the Varicella-Zoster Virus Transcriptome
Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a double-stranded DNA virus, causes varicella, establishes lifelong latency in ganglionic neurons, and reactivates later in life
to cause herpes zoster, commonly associated with chronic pain. The VZV genome is
densely packed and produces multitudes of overlapping transcripts deriving from
both strands. While 71 distinct open reading frames (ORFs) have thus far been experimentally defined, the full coding potential of VZV remains unknown. Here, we
integrated multiple short-read RNA sequencing approaches with long-read direct
RNA sequencing on RNA isolated from VZV-infected cells to provide a comprehensive reannotation of the lytic VZV transcriptome architecture. Through precise mapping of transcription start sites, splice junctions, and polyadenylation
sites, we identified 136 distinct polyadenylated VZV RNAs that encode canonical
ORFs, noncanonical ORFs, and ORF fusions, as well as putative noncoding RNAs

A model for net-baryon rapidity distribution
In nuclear collisions, a sizable fraction of the available energy is carried
away by baryons. As the baryon number is conserved, the net-baryon
retains information on the energy-momentum carried by the incoming nuclei. A
simple and consistent model for net-baryon production in high energy
proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The basic
ingredients of the model are valence string formation based on standard PDFs
with QCD evolution and string fragmentation via the Schwinger mechanism. The
results of the model are presented and compared with data at different
centre-of-mass energies and centralities, as well as with existing models.
These results show that a good description of the main features of net-baryon
data is possible in the framework of a simplistic model, with the advantage of

Endoscopic resection of advanced ampullary adenomas: a single-center 14-year retrospective cohort study
Background: Endoscopic ampullectomy has been recognized as a safe and reliable means to resect selective tumors of the ampulla of Vater and is associated with lower morbidity and mortality rates compared to surgical resection. Success rates range from 42 to 92%, with recurrences reported in up to 33%. Studies on endoscopic resection of advanced lesions such as those with intraductal extension of adenoma (IEA) and lateral spreading adenomas (LSA) are limited. We aimed to evaluate the technical success, complications, and recurrence of endoscopic resection of ampullary adenomas, including advanced lesions. Methods: All patients referred to the Erasmus Medical Center for endoscopic resection of an ampullary lesion were retrospectively identified between 2002 and 2016. Endoscopic success was defined as complete excision of the adenoma, irrespective of the number of attempts, in the absence of recurrence. Results: We included 87 patients with a median age of 65Â years. Of these, 56 patients (64%) had an adenoma confined to the ampulla (ACA), 20 patients (23%) had an LSA, and 11 patients (13%) were treated for an IEA. The median lesion sizes were 24.6Â mm, 41.4Â mm, and 16.3Â mm, respectively (P < 0.001). Complications occurred in 22 patients (25.3%), of which hemorrhage was most prevalent (12.6%), followed by perforation (8.1%). Complications were equally divided (P = 0.874). The median follow-up duration was 21.1Â months (12â45.9) for ACA, 14.7Â months (4.2â34.5) for LSA, and 5.8Â months (3.7â22.0) for IEA (P = 0.051). Endoscopic resection was curative in 87.5% of patients with an ACA, 85% in patients with an LSA, and in only one patient with an IEA (P < 0.001). Recurrence occurred in 10 patients (11.5%) (P = 0.733). Conclusion: Endoscopic ampullectomy is safe and highly successful in selected patients with an adenoma with or without lateral spreading. Outcomes of endoscopic treatment adenomas with an intraductal extension are less favorable and in these cases surgery should be considered
