Transitioning to the Role of a Professional Physical Therapist Through Community Engagement

This article recounts the author\u27s experiences observing and interning with physical therapists in a variety of settings.The hands-on experiences the author describes allowed the author to learn the specific procedures and requirements in a typical day as a Physical Therapist, and to gain knowledge on the protocol for different injuries, the muscles that each exercise strengthens, and how to properly perform exercises to prevent further injuries. The author also explores how these experiences fostered observational and interpersonal skills and solidified the decision to pursue Physical Therapy as a career

The use of podcasts and videocasts by tertiary accounting students in distance education

Podcasts and videocasts are increasingly used in education, as they provide additional flexible learning resources to students. Research on the educational use and design of videocasts used by students in a distance education environment is, however, limited. In light of the need to ascertain how best to design videocasts, this article reports on distance students’ perceptions of using this technological innovation as part of teaching support provided by educators. The research was conducted by means of a survey and it investigated how videocasts were used by undergraduate students in a taxation module. The research also investigated the usefulness of videocasts to students in mastering the extensive content and complex principles. The results from this study found that students generally access the videocasts from home on a computer/laptop while working through or after reading the study unit. Most students reject the mobile aspect of videocasting and prefer to maintain their traditional study habits by watching each videocast at least once (or more than once for more difficult topics) during their focused study time. The majority of students perceive videocasting as having value, as this initiative provides them with additional support and helps them to understand the content more easily. It is evident that the use of videocasts as an additional learning tool in taxation distance education courses can enhance the learning experience of accounting students and it is a viable way of communicating content to and documenting processes for students to enable them to study more effectively

IMPROVING THE BUSINESS TRAJECTORY AMONG SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZE CONSTRUCTION FIRMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

However, the failure rate of SME businesses, which has increased in recent years, constitutes a source of concern in the industry. This situation is reflected in the limited number of successful construction SMEs as a percentage of the total registered firms in the industry. The research design for the study reported on entailed semi-structured and unstructured interviews, which were conducted over an extensive period of time to gather sufficient information from the research participants. However, the preliminary findings that form the nexus of this paper are based on the reviewed literature, and a pilot study that was conducted among a purposive sample of construction SMEs - Grades 1 to 5 on the cidb register. It is notable that the initial findings suggest that construction SMEs often encounter difficulty in securing projects, fail to realise core organisational objectives and goals, and are unable to gain cost advantages over their immediate rivals, which affects their business performance. Thus it appears that more effort is required to improve the business performance of construction SMEs in South Africa

Business models for sustained ehealth implementation: lessons from two continents

There is general consensus that Computers and Information Technology have the potential to enhance health systems applications, and many good examples of such applications exist all over the world. Unfortunately, with respect to eHealth and telemedicine, there is much disillusionment and scepticism. This paper describes two models that were developed separately, but had the same purpose, namely to facilitate a holistic approach to the development and implementation of eHealth solutions. The roadmap of the Centre for eHealth Research (CeHRes roadmap) was developed in the Netherlands, and the Telemedicine Maturity Model (TMMM) was developed in South Africa. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the commonalities and differences of these approaches, and to explore how they can be used to complement each other. The first part of this paper comprises of a comparison of these models in terms of origin, research domain and design principles. Case comparisons are then presented to illustrate how these models complement one another

The WKB Approximation without Divergences

In this paper, the WKB approximation to the scattering problem is developed without the divergences which usually appear at the classical turning points. Instanton approach to the Langevin motion of a particle in a random potential

We develop an instanton approach to the non-equilibrium dynamics in one-dimensional random environments. The long time behavior is controlled by rare fluctuations of the disorder potential and, accordingly, by the tail of the distribution function for the time a particle needs to propagate along the system (the delay time). The proposed method allows us to find the tail of the delay time distribution function and delay time moments, providing thus an exact description of the long-time dynamics. We analyze arbitrary environments covering different types of glassy dynamics: dynamics in a short-range random field, creep, and Sinai's motion.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

On the Existence of the Quantum Action

We have previously proposed a conjecture stating that quantum mechanical transition amplitudes can be parametrized in terms of a quantum action. Here we give a proof of the conjecture and establish the existance of a local quantum action in the case of imaginary time in the Feynman-Kac limit (when temperature goes to zero).
