    15 páginas.- 5 figuras.- referencias.-Grazing exclusion alters grassland soil aggregation, microbiome composition, and biogeochemical processes. However, the long-term effects of grazing exclusion on the microbial communities and nutrient dynamics within soil aggregates remain unclear. We conducted a 36-year exclusion experiment to investigate how grazing exclusion affects the soil microbial community and the associated soil functions within soil aggregates in a semiarid grassland. Long-term (36 years) grazing exclusion induced a shift in microbial communities, especially in the 2 mm aggregates, and reduced carbon (C) sequestration potential thus revealing a negative impact of long-term GE. In contrast, 11–26 years of grazing exclusion greatly increased C sequestration and promoted nutrient cycling in soil aggregates and associated microbial functional genes. Moreover, the environmental characteristics of microhabitats (e.g., soil pH) altered the soil microbiome and strongly contributed to C sequestration. Our findings reveal new evidence from soil microbiology for optimizing grazing exclusion duration to maintain multiple belowground ecosystem functions, providing promising suggestions for climate-smart and resource-efficient grasslands.This work was financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (32061123007, 41977031), the Strategic Priority Research Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences (XDB40020202), and the Natural Science Foundation of Hubei Province, China (2020CFA013). Detecting Neutrinos from Supernova Bursts in PandaX-4T

    Full text link
    Neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae are essential for the understanding of neutrino physics and stellar evolution. The dual-phase xenon dark matter detectors can provide a way to track explosions of galactic supernovae by detecting neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scatterings. In this study, a variation of progenitor masses as well as explosion models are assumed to predict the neutrino fluxes and spectra, which result in the number of expected neutrino events ranging from 6.6 to 13.7 at a distance of 10 kpc over a 10-second duration with negligible backgrounds at PandaX-4T. Two specialized triggering alarms for monitoring supernova burst neutrinos are built. The efficiency of detecting supernova explosions at various distances in the Milky Way is estimated. These alarms will be implemented in the real-time supernova monitoring system at PandaX-4T in the near future, providing the astronomical communities with supernova early warnings.Comment: 9 pages,6 figure

    Genomic Analyses Reveal Mutational Signatures and Frequently Altered Genes in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and the fourth most lethal cancer in China. However, although genomic studies have identified some mutations associated with ESCC, we know little of the mutational processes responsible. To identify genome-wide mutational signatures, we performed either whole-genome sequencing (WGS) or whole-exome sequencing (WES) on 104 ESCC individuals and combined our data with those of 88 previously reported samples. An APOBEC-mediated mutational signature in 47% of 192 tumors suggests that APOBEC-catalyzed deamination provides a source of DNA damage in ESCC. Moreover, PIK3CA hotspot mutations (c.1624G>A [p.Glu542Lys] and c.1633G>A [p.Glu545Lys]) were enriched in APOBEC-signature tumors, and no smoking-associated signature was observed in ESCC. In the samples analyzed by WGS, we identified focal (<100 kb) amplifications of CBX4 and CBX8. In our combined cohort, we identified frequent inactivating mutations in AJUBA, ZNF750, and PTCH1 and the chromatin-remodeling genes CREBBP and BAP1, in addition to known mutations. Functional analyses suggest roles for several genes (CBX4, CBX8, AJUBA, and ZNF750) in ESCC. Notably, high activity of hedgehog signaling and the PI3K pathway in approximately 60% of 104 ESCC tumors indicates that therapies targeting these pathways might be particularly promising strategies for ESCC. Collectively, our data provide comprehensive insights into the mutational signatures of ESCC and identify markers for early diagnosis and potential therapeutic targets

    Search for light dark matter from atmosphere in PandaX-4T

    Full text link
    We report a search for light dark matter produced through the cascading decay of η\eta mesons, which are created as a result of inelastic collisions between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere. We introduce a new and general framework, publicly accessible, designed to address boosted dark matter specifically, with which a full and dedicated simulation including both elastic and quasi-elastic processes of Earth attenuation effect on the dark matter particles arriving at the detector is performed. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data of 0.63 tonne\cdotyear exposure, no significant excess over background is observed. The first constraints on the interaction between light dark matter generated in the atmosphere and nucleus through a light scalar mediator are obtained. The lowest excluded cross-section is set at 5.9×1037cm25.9 \times 10^{-37}{\rm cm^2} for dark matter mass of 0.10.1 MeV/c2/c^2 and mediator mass of 300 MeV/c2/c^2. The lowest upper limit of η\eta to dark matter decay branching ratio is 1.6×1071.6 \times 10^{-7}

    A Search for Light Fermionic Dark Matter Absorption on Electrons in PandaX-4T

    Full text link
    We report a search on a sub-MeV fermionic dark matter absorbed by electrons with an outgoing active neutrino using the 0.63 tonne-year exposure collected by PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. No significant signals are observed over the expected background. The data are interpreted into limits to the effective couplings between such dark matter and electrons. For axial-vector or vector interactions, our sensitivity is competitive in comparison to existing astrophysical bounds on the decay of such dark matter into photon final states. In particular, we present the first direct detection limits for an axial-vector (vector) interaction which are the strongest in the mass range from 25 to 45 (35 to 50) keV/c2^2

    Scuta: A server-side access control system for web applications

    The Web is playing a very important role in our lives, and is becoming an essential element of the computing infrastructure. Unfortunately, its importance makes it the preferred target of attacks. Web-based vulnerabilities now outnumber traditional computer security concerns. A recent study shows that over 80 percent of web sites have had at least one serious vulnerability. We believe that the Web’s problems, to a large degree, are caused by the inadequacy of its underlying access control systems. To reduce the number of vulnerabilities, it is essential to provide web applications with better access control models that can adequately address the protection needs of the current Web. As a part of the efforts to develop a better access control system for the Web, we focus on the server-side access control in this paper. We introduce a new concept called subsession, based on which, we have developed a ringbased access control system (called Scuta) for web servers. Scuta provides a fine-grained and backward-compatible access control mechanism for web applications. We have implemented Scuta in PHP, and have conducted comprehensive case studies to evaluate its benefits

    Deep Learning-Based Channel Estimation for mmWave Massive MIMO Systems in Mixed-ADC Architecture

    Full text link
    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can significantly reduce the number of radio frequency (RF) chains by using lens antenna arrays, because it is usually the case that the number of RF chains is often much smaller than the number of antennas, so channel estimation becomes very challenging in practical wireless communication. In this paper, we investigated channel estimation for mmWave massive MIMO system with lens antenna array, in which we use a mixed (low/high) resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architecture to trade-off the power consumption and performance of the system. Specifically, most antennas are equipped with low-resolution ADC and the rest of the antennas use high-resolution ADC. By utilizing the sparsity of the mmWave channel, the beamspace channel estimation can be expressed as a sparse signal recovery problem, and the channel can be recovered by the algorithm based on compressed sensing. We compare the traditional channel estimation scheme with the deep learning channel-estimation scheme, which has a better advantage, such as that the estimation scheme based on deep neural network is significantly better than the traditional channel-estimation algorithm

    Part 1: Invited PapersInternational audienceThe Web is playing a very important role in our lives, and is becoming an essential element of the computing infrastructure. With such a glory come the attacks–the Web has become criminals’ preferred targets. Web-based vulnerabilities now outnumber traditional computer security concerns. Although various security solutions have been proposed to address the problems on the Web, few have addressed the root causes of why web applications are so vulnerable to these many attacks. We believe that the Web’s current access control models are fundamentally inadequate to satisfy the protection needs of today’s web, and they need to be redesigned. In this extended abstract, we explain our position, and summarize our efforts in redesigning the Web’s access control systems
