    Actual Measurement and Analysis on Microbial Contamination in Central Air Conditioning System at a Venue in Dalian, China

    AbstractActual measurement and analysis were carried out on microbial contamination in central air conditioning system at a venue in Dalian. By studying the microbial contamination in two air handling units with different thermal environments, we found that the fungi and bacteria were common existing on the surface of filter, and the trend of cell density distribution was center > against the wall > corner; The microbial pollution associated in the dust and floating in the air was extremely serious. By comparing the two units, we observed that fungus concentration: Unit A > Unit B, and bacteria concentration: Unit A < Unit B,. And the candida spp. accounted for 80 percent of the sample in Unit A; while in Unit B the cladosporium spp. occupied up to 50%. At the end of the paper, according to the results of measurement and analysis, the methods of controlling microbial contamination in HVAC system have been proposed

    Axillary lymph node dissection combined with radiotherapy for trichilemmal carcinoma with giant lymph node metastasis: A case report

    BackgroundTrichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is a rare malignancy with a poor outcome if local recurrence and distant metastasis occur. There is no treatment strategy for such a disease.Case presentationWe reported a complicated case of TC in the right lower abdomen with ipsilateral axillary and inguinal lymph node metastases. After surgery and radiotherapy, there has been no recurrence or metastasis in the follow-up to date.ConclusionWe believe that even though considered a tumor of low malignant potential, TC still has the risk of recurrence and metastasis, and the lymph node status should be identified if a high suspicion or diagnosis is made. Regional lymph node dissection followed by local radiotherapy is recommended as the optimal treatment strategy for patients with lymph node metastases of TC. Screening for metastasis and close follow-up are indispensable for improving prognosis

    Seasonal temperature variation in Zostera marina seedlings under ocean acidification

    ObjectiveTo investigate the responses of Zostera marina seedlings to the individual and combined stresses of seasonal temperature increase and ocean acidification (OA) caused by global climate change and anthropogenic factors. This data will help in efforts to protect and restore seagrass beds in temperate coastal zones of China.MethodsA mesoscale experimental system was utilized to analyze stress response mechanisms at multiple levels - phenotype, transcriptome, and metabolome - during the seedling stage of Z. marina, a dominant temperate seagrass species in China. The study monitored the seedlings under varying conditions: increased seasonal temperature, OA, and a combination of both.ResultsFindings revealed that under high-temperature conditions, carotenoid biosynthesis was stimulated through the upregulation of specific metabolites and enzymes. Similarly, the biosynthesis of certain alkaloids was promoted alongside modifications in starch, sucrose, and nitrogen metabolism, which improved the plant’s adaptation to OA. Unique metabolic pathways were activated under OA, including the degradation of certain amino acids and modifications in the citric acid cycle and pyruvate metabolism. When subjected to both temperature and OA stresses, seedlings actively mobilized various biosynthetic pathways to enhance adaptability and resilience, with distinct metabolic pathways enhancing the plant’s response under diversified stress conditions. In terms of growth, all treatment groups exhibited significant leaf length increase (p &lt; 0.05), but the weakest growth index was observed under combined stress, followed by the thermal treatment group. Conversely, growth under OA treatment was better, showing a significant increase in wet weight, leaf length, and leaf width (p &lt; 0.05).ConclusionSeasonal temperature increase was found to inhibit the growth of Z. marina seedlings to some extent, while OA facilitated their growth. However, the positive effects of OA did not mitigate the damage caused by increased seasonal temperature under combined stress due to seedlings’ sensitivity at this stage. Our findings elucidate differing plant coping strategies under varied stress conditions, contingent on the initial environment. This research anticipates providing significant data support for the adaptation of Z. marina seedlings to seasonal temperature fluctuations and global oceanic events like OA, propelling the effective conservation of seagrass beds

    Association of urban forest landscape characteristics with biomass and soil carbon stocks in Harbin City, Northeastern China

    Background Urban forests help in mitigating carbon emissions; however, their associations with landscape patterns are unclear. Understanding the associations would help us to evaluate urban forest ecological services and favor urban forest management via landscape regulations. We used Harbin, capital city of the northernmost province in China, as an example and hypothesized that the urban forests had different landscape metrics among different forest types, administrative districts, and urban–rural gradients, and these differences were closely associated with forest carbon sequestration in the biomass and soils. Methods We extracted the urban forest tree coverage area on the basis of 2 GF-1 remote sensing images and object-oriented based classification method. The analysis of forest landscape patterns and estimation of carbon storage were based on tree coverage data and 199 plots. We also examined the relationships between forest landscape metrics and carbon storage on the basis of forest types, administrative districts, ring roads, and history of urban settlements by using statistical methods. Results The small patches covering an area of less than 0.5 ha accounted for 72.6% of all patches (average patch size, 0.31 ha). The mean patch size (AREA_MN) and largest patch index (LPI) were the highest in the landscape and relaxation forest and Songbei District. The landscape shape index (LSI) and number of patches linearly decreased along rural-urban gradients (p < 0.05). The tree biomass carbon storage varied from less than 10 thousand tons in the urban center (first ring road region and 100-year regions) to more than 100 thousand tons in the rural regions (fourth ring road and newly urbanized regions). In the same urban–rural gradients, soil carbon storage varied from less than five thousand tons in the urban centers to 73–103 thousand tons in the rural regions. The association analysis indicated that the total forest area was the key factor that regulates total carbon storage in trees and soils. However, in the case of carbon density (ton ha−1), AREA_MN was strongly associated with tree biomass carbon, and soil carbon density was negatively related to LSI (p < 0.01) and AREA_MN (p < 0.05), but positively related to LPI (p < 0.05). Discussion The urban forests were more fragmented in Harbin than in other provincial cities in Northeastern China, as shown by the smaller patch size, more complex patch shape, and larger patch density. The decrease in LSI along the rural-urban gradients may contribute to the forest carbon sequestrations in downtown regions, particularly underground soil carbon accumulation, and the increasing patch size may benefit tree carbon sequestration. Our findings help us to understand how forest landscape metrics are associated with carbon storage function. These findings related to urban forest design may maximize forest carbon sequestration services and facilitate in precisely estimating the forest carbon sink

    Analysis of the role of BrRPP1 gene in Chinese cabbage infected by Plasmodiophora brassicae

    IntroductionThe clubroot disease caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae (P. brassicae) poses a serious threat to the economic value of cruciferous crops, which is a serious problem to be solved worldwide. Some resistance genes to clubroot disease in Brassica rapa L. ssp pekinensis cause by P. brassicae have been located on different chromosomes. Among them, Rcr1 and Rcr2 were mapped to the common candidate gene Bra019410, but its resistance mechanism is not clear yet.MethodsIn this experiment, the differences of BrRPP1 between the resistant and susceptible material of Chinese cabbage were analyzed by gene cloning and qRT-PCR. The gene function was verified by Arabidopsis homologous mutants. The expression site of BrRPP1 gene in cells was analyzed by subcellular localization. Finally, the candidate interaction protein of BrRPP1 was screened by yeast two-hybrid library.ResultsThe results showed that the cDNA sequence, upstream promoter sequence and expression level of BrRPP1 were quite different between the resistant and susceptible material. The resistance investigation found that the Arabidopsis mutant rpp1 was more susceptible to clubroot disease than the wild type, which suggested that the deletion of rpp1 reduces resistance of plant to clubroot disease. Subcellular location analysis confirmed that BrRPP1 was located in the nucleus. The interaction proteins of BrRPP1 screened from cDNA Yeast Library by yeast two-hybrid are mainly related to photosynthesis, cell wall modification, jasmonic acid signal transduction and programmed cell death.DiscussionBrRPP1 gene contains TIR-NBS-LRR domain and belongs to R gene. The cDNA and promoter sequence of BrRPP1 in resistant varieties was different from that in susceptible varieties led to the significant difference of the gene expression of BrRPP1 between the resistant varieties and the susceptible varieties. The high expression of BrRPP1 gene in resistant varieties enhanced the resistance of Chinese cabbage to P. brassicae, and the interaction proteins of BrRPP1 are mainly related to photosynthesis, cell wall modification, jasmonic acid signal transduction and programmed cell death. These results provide important clues for understanding the mechanism of BrRPP1 in the resistance of B. rapa to P. brassicae

    Effects of straw returning combined with earthworm addition on nitrification and ammonia oxidizers in paddy soil

    IntroductionSoil ammonia oxidation, which acts as the first and rate-limiting step of nitrification, is driven by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and complete ammonia oxidizer (comammox, amoA gene of clade-A and clade-B). Straw returning, widely used ecological technology in China, is an effective measure for promoting straw decomposition and soil nutrient cycling when combined with earthworm addition. However, the effects of straw returning combined with earthworm addition on soil ammonia oxidizers remain poorly understood.MethodsA 2-year plot experiment was conducted with 5 treatments: no fertilizer (CK); regular fertilization (RT); straw returning (SR); earthworm addition (W); straw returning + earthworm addition (SRW). The AOA, AOB, comammox clade-A and clade-B community microbial diversities and structures were investigated by high-throughput sequencing.ResultsThe results showed that (1) compared to RT treatment, W, SR, and SRW treatments all significantly increased the richness of AOA and comammox clade-A and clade-B (p &lt; 0.05), and the richness of AOB was only significantly promoted by SRW treatment (p &lt; 0.05). However, only SRW had a higher comammox clade-B diversity index than RT. (2) The ammonia oxidizer community structures were altered by both straw returning and earthworm addition. Soil NH4+-N was the critical environmental driver for altering the ammonia oxidizer community structure. (3) Compared with RT treatment, the soil potential nitrification rate (PNR) of W and SRW treatments increased by 1.19 and 1.20 times, respectively. The PNR was significantly positively correlated with AOB abundance (path coefficient = 0.712, p &lt; 0.05) and negatively correlated with clade-B abundance (path coefficient = −0.106, p &lt; 0.05).DiscussionThis study provides scientific support for the application of straw returning combined with earthworm addition to improve soil nitrification with respect to soil ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms

    Definitive Simultaneous Integrated Boost Versus Conventional-Fractionated Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy for Patients With Advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to compare the effects of simultaneous integrated boost–intensity modulated radiotherapy (SIB-IMRT) and conventional fractionated-IMRT (CF-IMRT) for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).MethodsThe data of 1173 patients treated with either CF-IMRT or SIB-IMRT for a curative intent from 2005 to 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to create a well-balanced cohort of 687 patients at 1:2 ratio (237 patients in SIB-IMRT group and 450 patients in CF-IMRT group). Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), recurrence pattern, and toxicity profiles were evaluated and compared between the two groups after PSM.ResultsAfter a median follow-up time of 42.3 months (range, 3.0-153.2 months) for surviving patients, survival results were comparable in the two groups. After PSM, the 1-year, 2-year and 4-year OS rates in the SIB-IMRT and CF-IMRT groups were 70.0% vs. 66.4%, 41.9% vs. 41.7% and 30.2% vs. 27.6%, respectively (p = 0.87). The 1-year, 2-year and 4-year PFS rates were 48.4% vs. 49.1%, 31.2% vs. 29.4%, and 26.1% vs. 17.9%, respectively (p = 0.64). Locoregional recurrence (p = 0.32) and distant metastasis (p = 0.54) rates were also comparable between two groups. The toxicity profile was similar in the two groups. Multivariate analyses in the matched samples showed that female, concurrent chemotherapy and earlier clinical stage were independently associated with longer OS and PFS.ConclusionsSIB-IMRT appears to be equivalent to CF-IMRT in treatment efficacy and safety, and could become an alternative option for definitive radiotherapy of ESCC

    Etiology and Clinical Characterization of Respiratory Virus Infections in Adult Patients Attending an Emergency Department in Beijing

    BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) represent a serious global health burden. To date, few reports have addressed the prevalence of respiratory viruses (RVs) in adults with ARTIs attending an emergency department (ED). Therefore, the potential impact of respiratory virus infections on such patients remains unknown. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To determine the epidemiological and clinical profiles of common and recently discovered respiratory viruses in adults with ARTIs attending an ED in Beijing, a 1-year consecutive study was conducted from May, 2010, to April, 2011. Nose and throat swab samples from 416 ARTI patients were checked for 13 respiratory viruses using multiple reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) assays for common respiratory viruses, including influenza viruses (Flu) A, B, and adenoviruses (ADVs), picornaviruses (PICs), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses (PIVs) 1-3, combined with real-time RT-PCR for human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and human coronaviruses (HCoVs, -OC43, -229E, -NL63, and -HKU1). Viral pathogens were detected in 52.88% (220/416) of patient samples, and 7.21% (30/416) of patients tested positive for more than one virus. PICs (17.79%) were the dominant agents detected, followed by FluA (16.11%), HCoVs (11.78%), and ADV (11.30%). HMPV, PIVs, and FluB were also detected (<3%), but not RSV. The total prevalence and the dominant virus infections detected differed significantly between ours and a previous report. Co-infection rates were high for HCoV-229E (12/39, 30.76%), PIC (22/74, 29.73%), ADV (12/47, 25.53%) and FluA (15/67, 22.39%). Different patterns of clinical symptoms were associated with different respiratory viruses. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of RV involvement in adults with ARTIs attending an ED in China differs from that previously reported. The high prevalence of viruses (PIC, FluA, HCoVs and ADV) reported here strongly highlight the need for the development of safe and effective therapeutic approaches for these viruses
