Probing Transverse Momentum Broadening via Dihadron and Hadron-jet Angular Correlations in Relativistic Heavy-ion Collisions
Dijet, dihadron, hadron-jet angular correlations have been reckoned as
important probes of the transverse momentum broadening effects in relativistic
nuclear collisions. When a pair of high-energy jets created in hard collisions
traverse the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions, they become
de-correlated due to the vacuum soft gluon radiation associated with the
Sudakov logarithms and the medium-induced transverse momentum broadening. For
the first time, we employ the systematical resummation formalism and establish
a baseline calculation to describe the dihadron and hadron-jet angular
correlation data in and peripheral collisions where the medium effect
is negligible. We demonstrate that the medium-induced broadening and the so-called jet quenching parameter can be
extracted from the angular de-correlations observed in collisions. A
global analysis of dihadron and hadron-jet angular correlation data
renders the best fit for a
quark jet at RHIC top energy. Further experimental and theoretical efforts
along the direction of this work shall significantly advance the quantitative
understanding of transverse momentum broadening and help us acquire
unprecedented knowledge of jet quenching parameter in relativistic heavy-ion
collisions.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Animal Models of Burn Wound Management
Burn injury is known as the most traumatic wound. In the clinical, most patients with burn injury suffer from extreme pain during wound management; hence, the effective treatment that involved advanced medication is needed. In the evaluation of burn wound care devices, the use of animal model is considered suitable as valuable tools to investigate the burn pathophysiology as well as the efficacy of treatment strategies due to the complexity and heterogeneous nature of the burn. This chapter aimed to review the preclinical small and large animal models of burn injury for translational applications and to highlight their benefits and limitations for the burn treatment design that are clinically applicable to humans
Building Ubiquitous Computing Environment by Using RFID in Aircraft MRO Process
The implementation of RFID had aroused discussion in every area. Experts believe that the emergence of RFID will cause another business revolution. Many industries had deployed RFID, like aviation industry, in which RFID is used in maintenance materials and baggage management. This paper discusses the implementation of RFID in MRO process and the building of a ubiquitous computing environment. We believe that our proposal has three merits to MRO (1) anti-counterfeit parts (2) MRO liability (3) efficient and effective inspection. The architecture can address the competition pressure that aviation industry faces and consequently enhance competition advantages
Exploring the Collective Phenomenon at the Electron-Ion Collider
Based on rare fluctuations in strong interactions, we argue that there is a
strong physical resemblance between the high multiplicity events in
photo-nuclear collisions and those in collisions, in which interesting
long range collective phenomena are discovered. This indicates that the
collectivity can also be studied in certain kinematic region of the upcoming
Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) where the incoming virtual photon has a
sufficiently long lifetime. Using a model in the Color Glass Condensate
formalism, we first show that the initial state interactions can explain the
recent ATLAS azimuthal correlation results measured in the photo-nuclear
collisions, and then we provide quantitative predictions for the long range
correlations in collisions in the EIC regime. With the unprecedented
precision and the ability to change the size of the collisional system, the
high luminosity EIC will open a new window to explore the physical mechanism
responsible for the collective phenomenon.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; published versio
Rapid identification of allergenic and pathogenic molds in environmental air by an oligonucleotide array

Abstract

Background

Airborne fungi play an important role in causing allergy and infections in susceptible people. Identification of these fungi, based on morphological characteristics, is time-consuming, expertise-demanding, and could be inaccurate.

Methods

We developed an oligonucleotide array that could accurately identify 21 important airborne fungi (13 genera) that may cause adverse health problems. The method consisted of PCR amplification of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, hybridization of the PCR products to a panel of oligonucleotide probes immobilized on a nylon membrane, and detection of the hybridization signals with alkaline phosphatase-conjugated antibodies.

Results

A collection of 72 target and 66 nontarget reference strains were analyzed by the array. Both the sensitivity and specificity of the array were 100%, and the detection limit was 10 pg of genomic DNA per assay. Furthermore, 70 fungal isolates recovered from air samples were identified by the array and the identification results were confirmed by sequencing of the ITS and D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit RNA gene. The sensitivity and specificity of the array for identification of the air isolates was 100% (26/26) and 97.7% (43/44), respectively.

Conclusions

Identification of airborne fungi by the array was cheap and accurate. The current array may contribute to decipher the relationship between airborne fungi and adverse health effect.</p
Therapeutic Applications of Herbal Medicines for Cancer Patients
Medicinal herbs and their derivative phytocompounds are being increasingly recognized as useful complementary treatments for cancer. A large volume of clinical studies have reported the beneficial effects of herbal medicines on the survival, immune modulation, and quality of life (QOL) of cancer patients, when these herbal medicines are used in combination with conventional therapeutics. Here, we briefly review some examples of clinical studies that investigated the use of herbal medicines for various cancers and the development of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in this emerging research area. In addition, we also report recent studies on the biochemical and cellular mechanisms of herbal medicines in specific tumor microenvironments and the potential application of specific phytochemicals in cell-based cancer vaccine systems. This review should provide useful technological support for evidence-based application of herbal medicines in cancer therapy
