    Theory of thermalization in an isolated Bose-Einstein condensate

    Thermalization in an isolated oscillating Bose-Einstein condensate in a disordered trap is investigated. We show Shannon entropy in xx or pp representation is the eligible one to describe the thermalization. Besides, we show that multiple scattering with the disorder generates more and more incoherent thermal particles and condensed and thermal particles act as mutual heat bath that results in the thermalization of the whole system. We also demonstrate that Loschmidt's paradox can be resolved in the present system

    Giant lipoma arising from deep lobe of the parotid gland

    BACKGROUND: Lipomas are common benign soft tissue neoplasms but they are found very rarely in the deep lobe of parotid gland. Surgical intervention in these tumors is challenging because of the proximity of the facial nerve, and thus knowledge of the anatomy and meticulous surgical technique are essential. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female presented with a large asymptomatic mass, which had occupied the left facial area for over the past fifteen years, and she requested surgical excision for a cosmetically better facial appearance. The computed tomography (CT) scan showed a well-defined giant lipoma arising from the left deep parotid gland. The lipoma was successfully enucleated after full exposure and mobilization of the overlying facial nerve branches. The surgical specimen measured 9 × 6 cm in size, and histopathology revealed fibrolipoma. The patient experienced an uneventful recovery, with a satisfying facial contour and intact facial nerve function. CONCLUSION: Giant lipomas involving the deep parotid lobe are extremely rare. The high-resolution CT scan provides an accurate and cost-effective preoperative investigative method. Surgical management of deep lobe lipoma should be performed by experienced surgeons due to the need for meticulous dissection of the facial nerve branches. Superficial parotidectomy before deep lobe lipoma removal may be unnecessary in selected cases because preservation of the superficial lobe may contribute to a better aesthetic and functional result

    Tunable generation of entangled photons in a nonlinear directional coupler

    The on-chip integration of quantum light sources has enabled the realization of complex quantum photonic circuits. However, for the practical implementation of such circuits in quantum information applications it is crucial to develop sources delivering entangled quantum photon states with on-demand tunability. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate the concept of a widely tunable quantum light source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear directional coupler. We show that spatial photon-pair correlations and entanglement can be reconfigured on-demand by tuning the phase difference between the pump beams and the phase mismatch inside the structure. We demonstrate the generation of split states, robust N00N states, various intermediate regimes and biphoton steering. This fundamental scheme provides an important advance towards the realization of reconfigurable quantum circuitry

    Activation of Endothelial Cells by Antiphospholipid Antibodies—A Possible Mechanism Triggering Thrombosis in Patients with Antiphospholipid Syndrome

    Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an antibody-mediated hypercoagulable state characterized by recurrent venous and arterial thromboembolic events. The presence of serum antibodies are collectively termed as antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) and is the hallmark of the disease. Interest in the pathogenesis has mostly been focused on the blood coagulation factor. However, endothelial cells might play an important role. When stimulated, cell membrane would flip to expose negatively charged phospholipids and activation markers such as adhesive molecules may appear. We consider that these changes may play an important role in the initiation of the thrombotic process when endothelial cells encounter aPL. In this study, we incubated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with IgG isolated from patients with APS and found that the HUVECs were activated by the expression of negatively charged phospholipids, as shown by high annexin V binding and negative propidium iodide staining and by an increase in the level of intracellular cell adhesion molecule-1 on the cell surface. The above findings indicate that endothelial cells can be activated on exposure to aPL and trigger the thrombotic event

    Cardiotoxicity Associated with Trastuzumab Therapy in Taiwan: A Single Medical Center's 5-Year Experience

    AbstractIntroductionTrastuzumab, a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody, targets the external domain of HER2 to improve the efficacy of HER2-positive breast cancer treatment and inhibit carcinoma cellular proliferation. The purpose of this study was to identify early changes in cardiac function and dimensional changes in heart size in patients treated with trastuzumab.Materials and MethodsSeventy three female patients with Her2/neu overexpression (IHC 3+/Fish +) in breast cancer underwent echocardiography before and after trastuzumab therapy.ResultsCardiac complications developed in 14 patients (19.2%), including asymptomatic left ventricle systolic dysfunction (n = 12), symptomatic heart failure (n = 2), new asymptomatic left bundle branch block (n = 1), new negative T waves on electrocardiogram (n = 2), pericardial effusion (n = 1), and death (n = 1). No significant deterioration in diastolic function was noted, and right heart diameters and function did not change significantly. Most patients remained in an asymptomatic stage of cardiac disease. A significant decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was observed in 14 patients (19.2%), and new mitral regurgitation (≄ grade 1) was noted after 3 months of trastuzumab therapy in 7 patients (9.6%).ConclusionsTrastuzumab led to measurable decreases in LVEF (but only 2.7% was symptomatic heart failure) and new mitral regurgitation. Therefore, regular follow-up with echocardiography is essential for early detection and prevention of trastuzumab-induced cardiomyopathy

    Papillary Adenocarcinoma of Rete Testis Mimics Inflammatory Lump: A Case Report

    We presented a rare extratesticular neoplasm, papillary adenocarcinoma of rete testis, which manifested variable symptoms and mimicked most frequently seen benign extratesticular lesions. Due to its rarity, the treatment is therefore uncertain. Our patient's clinical manifestations mimicked an inflammatory lump and underwent radical orchiectomy after pathological report had been confirmed. Unlike other reports, our patient survives and has a good outcome. No definite predictor and tumor marker can be used to define the prognosis. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment may have a good outcome
