    Flexible virtual learning environments: a schema-driven approach using sematic web concepts

    Flexible e-Iearning refers to an intelligent educational mechanism that focuses on simulating and improving traditional education as far as possible on the Web by integrating various electronic approaches, technologies, and equipment. This mechanism aims to promote the personalized development and management of e-learning Web services and applications. The main value of this method is that it provides high-powered individualization in pedagogy for students and staff.Here, the thesis mainly studied three problems in meeting the practical requirements of users in education. The first question is how a range of teaching styles (e.g. command and guided discovery) can be supported. The second one is how varieties of instructional processes can be authored. The third question is how these processes can be controlled by learners and educators in terms of their personalized needs during the execution of instruction.In this research, through investigating the existing e-Iearning approaches and technologies, the main technical problems of current virtual learning environments (VLEs) were analyzed. Next, by using the Semantic Web concepts as well as relevant standards, a schema-driven approach was created. This method can support users' individualized operations in the Web-based education. Then, a flexible e-learning system based on the approach was designed and implemented to map a range of extensive didactic paradigms. Finally, a case study was completed to evaluate the research results. The main findings of the assessment were that the flexible VLE implemented a range of teaching styles and the personalized creation and control of educational processes

    Personalized content provision for virtual learning environments via the semantic web

    In this paper we discuss how we may personalize e-learning along three distinct axes, namely: teaching and learning pedagogical philosophies, personalized educational processes to taste and the coordination of these processes during execution. In doing so we are concerned with supporting users' choices of educational options in course delivery via the Web services. In the work presented here, we assess the practical needs of learners and tutors and then the main research problems are analysed from a practical and pragmatic point of view. Following on from this the design of an intelligent virtual learning environment (VLE) is described to map a set of extensive didactic paradigms, which is represented by a system model and architecture. In this system, the semantic information of learning units and processes (e.g. the relationships among units) can be described and integrated in terms of various requirements of our users. As a result instructional materials with a wide variety of executional options and conditions can be built. Furthermore, through reassembling the semantics of learning content according to users' new demands, our target audience (both student and content deliverers) can change their particular educational experience dynamically. This VLE can provide high-powered pedagogy-layered personalization - thus enabling new managed e-learning Web services and applications

    Renewable Energy in District Heating Systems in China:Status and perspectives

    In the fight against climate change, China’s aim is to ensure that the CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2060. The heating sector is one of the key elements to ensure those targets are reached. Today around 95% of heating is based on coal, natural gas and oil. With energy efficiency and renewable energy changes using district heating and smart energy systems, this transition can be more cost efficient. Currently, district heating has covered approx.85% of the total heating areas in Northern China, however a deeper understanding is required to unlock the full potential of this infrastructure. In this paper we illustrate that a combination of energy refurbishment of buildings, energy efficiency using waste heat, and renewable energy sources from geothermal, bioenergy and solar thermal, can decarbonize the buildings using district heating in China. By using lower temperature 4th generation district heating, thermal energy storage and large-scale heat pumps, such systems can help integrating more renewable energy. In international and Chinese scientific literature there is a lack of research and knowledge within smart energy systems, low temperature district heating and unconventional waste heat sources. Although the sources and main infrastructures needed in the form of district heating pipe network and electricity grids exist, a deeper understanding is needed in response to the challenges regarding the geographical separation between renewable sources and demanding area as well as the potential for deeper renovation of buildings and further expansion of district heating. Such knowledge is required to support the early signs of policies changing towards stronger focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy

    Design of the offline test electronics for the nozzle system of proton therapy

    A set of nozzle equipment for proton therapy is now being developed at China Institute of Atomic Energy. To facilitate the off-line commissioning of the whole equipment, a set of ionization chamber signal generation system, the test electronics, is designed. The system uses ZYNQ SoC as the main control unit and outputs the beam dose analog signal through DAC8532. The dual SPDT analog switch, DG636, is used to simulate the beam position signals according to Gaussian distribution. The results show that the system can simulate the beam position, dose, and other related analog signals generated by the proton beam when passing through the ionization chamber. Moreover, the accuracy of the simulated beam position is within +/-0.33mm, and the accuracy of the simulated dose signal is within +/-1%. At the same time, it can output analog signals representing environmental parameters. The test electronics meets the design requirements, which can be used to commission the nozzle system as well as the treatment control system without the proton beam

    Epimorphin Regulates Bile Duct Formation via Effects on Mitosis Orientation in Rat Liver Epithelial Stem-Like Cells

    Understanding how hepatic precursor cells can generate differentiated bile ducts is crucial for studies on epithelial morphogenesis and for development of cell therapies for hepatobiliary diseases. Epimorphin (EPM) is a key morphogen for duct morphogenesis in various epithelial organs. The role of EPM in bile duct formation (DF) from hepatic precursor cells, however, is not known. To address this issue, we used WB-F344 rat epithelial stem-like cells as model for bile duct formation. A micropattern and a uniaxial static stretch device was used to investigate the effects of EPM and stress fiber bundles on the mitosis orientation (MO) of WB cells. Immunohistochemistry of liver tissue sections demonstrated high EPM expression around bile ducts in vivo. In vitro, recombinant EPM selectively induced DF through upregulation of CK19 expression and suppression of HNF3α and HNF6, with no effects on other hepatocytic genes investigated. Our data provide evidence that EPM guides MO of WB-F344 cells via effects on stress fiber bundles and focal adhesion assembly, as supported by blockade EPM, β1 integrin, and F-actin assembly. These blockers can also inhibit EPM-induced DF. These results demonstrate a new biophysical action of EPM in bile duct formation, during which determination of MO plays a crucial role

    Crystal Structure of a Novel Esterase Rv0045c from Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    There are at least 250 enzymes in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) involved in lipid metabolism. Some of the enzymes are required for bacterial survival and full virulence. The esterase Rv0045c shares little amino acid sequence similarity with other members of the esterase/lipase family. Here, we report the 3D structure of Rv0045c. Our studies demonstrated that Rv0045c is a novel member of α/β hydrolase fold family. The structure of esterase Rv0045c contains two distinct domains: the α/β fold domain and the cap domain. The active site of esterase Rv0045c is highly conserved and comprised of two residues: Ser154 and His309. We proposed that Rv0045c probably employs two kinds of enzymatic mechanisms when hydrolyzing C-O ester bonds within substrates. The structure provides insight into the hydrolysis mechanism of the C-O ester bond, and will be helpful in understanding the ester/lipid metabolism in M. tuberculosis

    HDAC Inhibitors Act with 5-aza-2′-Deoxycytidine to Inhibit Cell Proliferation by Suppressing Removal of Incorporated Abases in Lung Cancer Cells

    5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (5-aza-CdR) is used extensively as a demethylating agent and acts in concert with histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACI) to induce apoptosis or inhibition of cell proliferation in human cancer cells. Whether the action of 5-aza-CdR in this synergistic effect results from demethylation by this agent is not yet clear. In this study we found that inhibition of cell proliferation was not observed when cells with knockdown of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), or double knock down of DNMT1-DNMT3A or DNMT1-DNMT3B were treated with HDACI, implying that the demethylating function of 5-aza-CdR may be not involved in this synergistic effect. Further study showed that there was a causal relationship between 5-aza-CdR induced DNA damage and the amount of [3H]-5-aza-CdR incorporated in DNA. However, incorporated [3H]-5-aza-CdR gradually decreased when cells were incubated in [3H]-5-aza-CdR free medium, indicating that 5-aza-CdR, which is an abnormal base, may be excluded by the cell repair system. It was of interest that HDACI significantly postponed the removal of the incorporated [3H]-5-aza-CdR from DNA. Moreover, HDAC inhibitor showed selective synergy with nucleoside analog-induced DNA damage to inhibit cell proliferation, but showed no such effect with other DNA damage stresses such as γ-ray and UV, etoposide or cisplatin. This study demonstrates that HDACI synergistically inhibits cell proliferation with nucleoside analogs by suppressing removal of incorporated harmful nucleotide analogs from DNA

    A Low-Complexity DOA and Polarization Method of Polarization-Sensitive Array

    This paper proposes a low-complexity method to estimate the direction of arrival and polarization based on the polarization sensitive array (PSA) which is composed of cross-dipoles. We built a half-quaternions model through the Cayley–Dickson form to remove the redundant information. Then, the directions of arrival (DOAs) were estimated via the root-MUSIC algorithm. Finally, the polarizations were estimated by generalized eigenvalue method. Unlike some existing searching algorithms, such as multiple signal classification (MUSIC), this method can avoid the peak searching and maintains high estimation accuracy. Moreover, we use the oblique projection operators to filter out the interference signals which are decoys of the target signal. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and favorable performance of the proposed method
