    Using an identity lens : constructive working with children in the criminal justice system

    Research has shown that identity, and how you feel about yourself, can be key to moving forward with life and away from crime. Working with the University of Salford, Youth Offending Teams and supported by the Barrow Cadbury Trust, this resource has been developed to promote a constructive, identity-focused approach to ultimately help divert children away from progressing further through the criminal justice system. Using the principles of the Nacro-led Beyond Youth Custody programme, this toolkit outlines how these can be applied to working with children before custody to support them towards positive outcomes and prevent further offending

    An analysis of recently reported results of XMM-Newton observations of AE Aqr within a hypothesis that the detected X-ray source is located inside the Roche lobe of the white dwarf is presented. I show this hypothesis to be inconsistent with the currently adopted model of mass-transfer in the system.     For a lattice Λ\Lambda with nn vertices and dimension dd equal or higher than two, the number of spanning trees NST(Λ)N_{ST}(\Lambda) grows asymptotically as exp(nzΛ)\exp(n z_\Lambda) in the thermodynamic limit. We present exact integral expressions for the asymptotic growth constant zΛz_\Lambda for spanning trees on several lattices. By taking different unit cells in the calculation, many integration identities can be obtained.     N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and the prediction of primary cardiovascular events: results from 15-year follow-up of WOSCOPS

    <b>Aims:</b>To test whether N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was independently associated with, and improved the prediction of, cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a primary prevention cohort. <b>Methods and results:</b> In the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study (WOSCOPS), a cohort of middle-aged men with hypercholesterolaemia at a moderate risk of CVD, we related the baseline NT-proBNP (geometric mean 28 pg/mL) in 4801 men to the risk of CVD over 15 years during which 1690 experienced CVD events. Taking into account the competing risk of non-CVD death, NT-proBNP was associated with an increased risk of all CVD [HR: 1.17 (95% CI: 1.11–1.23) per standard deviation increase in log NT-proBNP] after adjustment for classical and clinical cardiovascular risk factors plus C-reactive protein. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide was more strongly related to the risk of fatal [HR: 1.34 (95% CI: 1.19–1.52)] than non-fatal CVD [HR: 1.17 (95% CI: 1.10–1.24)] (P= 0.022). The addition of NT-proBNP to traditional risk factors improved the C-index (+0.013; P < 0.001). The continuous net reclassification index improved with the addition of NT-proBNP by 19.8% (95% CI: 13.6–25.9%) compared with 9.8% (95% CI: 4.2–15.6%) with the addition of C-reactive protein. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide correctly reclassified 14.7% of events, whereas C-reactive protein correctly reclassified 3.4% of events. Results were similar in the 4128 men without evidence of angina, nitrate prescription, minor ECG abnormalities, or prior cerebrovascular disease. <b>Conclusion:</b> N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide predicts CVD events in men without clinical evidence of CHD, angina, or history of stroke, and appears related more strongly to the risk for fatal events. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide also provides moderate risk discrimination, in excess of that provided by the measurement of C-reactive protein

    Some Exact Results on the Potts Model Partition Function in a Magnetic Field

    We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph GG. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function ZZ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of GG, we prove some properties of ZZ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems.     The Linked Open Bibliographic Data project at UCL is developing an Open Educational Resource to enable the teaching and learning of BIBFRAME, the new RDF-based framework designed to take over from MARC. A new bibliographic dataset based on BIBFRAME, which will be linked with other online datasets, has been created for that purpose. The learning resource, which will be publicly available under an open licence on completion, will allow learners to access, explore, query and update the dataset through an intuitive interface built on top of the SPARQL query language. This masterclass shares experience in converting MARC records to BIBFRAME using the Library of Congress’s conversion tools [http://bibframe.org/tools/]. More fundamentally, it provides examples of how our model for Cataloguing is changing from linking record:record to field:field. Using publication data from library academics, we’ll look at what’s new in BIBFRAME and why this matters. Finally, we’ll discuss the extent to which those responsible for inputting data may (or may not) need to get to grips with the new data structure and ways that the enthusiastic can keep up
