In Orbit Attitude Determination, Control and Stabilization Performance of the STRL 1a and 1b MicroSatellites from the UK Defence Research Agency
This paper describes the in orbit performance of the Attitude, Determination, Control and Stabilization systems employed for the Satellite Technology Research Vehicles of the United Kingdom Defence Research Agency. These two satellites will be launched in June 1994 from an Ariane 4 launcher in to Geostationary Transfer Orbit. There is a requirement to ensure that the spin axis of the satellites is maintained in a position approximately 90 degrees to the Sun vector. The satellites are spin stabilized from launch by the 3rd stage launcher rotation and additionally STRV 1a uses cold gas zenon thrusters. Each satellite has a nutation damper and is fitted with a magnetotorquer coil for control actuation since aerodynamic torque correction is required. Full attitude determination is anticipated to be accurate to +/- 1 degree from lightweight, low-cost V-split Sun and Earth sensors. Telemetered control of the actuation system will be via time tagged commands due to the restricted visibility of the satellites to the ground stations
Influence of Gap Extrema on the Tunneling Conductance Near an Impurity in an Anisotropic Superconductor
Changes: figures added in postscript form, Eq. (7) and various typos
corrected. We examine the effect of an impurity on the nearby tunneling
conductance in an anisotropically-gapped superconductor. The variation of the
conductance has pronounced spatial dependence which depends strongly on the
Fermi surface location of gap extrema. In particular, different gap symmetries
produce profoundly different spatial features in the conductance. These effects
may be detectable with an STM measurement on the surface of a high-temperature

Precise Calculation of the Relic Density of Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter in Universal Extra Dimensions
We revisit the calculation of the relic density of the lightest Kaluza-Klein
particle (LKP) in the model of Universal Extra Dimensions. The Kaluza-Klein
(KK) particle spectrum at level one is rather degenerate, and various
coannihilation processes may be relevant. We extend the calculation of
hep-ph/0206071 to include coannihilation processes with all level one KK
particles. In our computation we consider a most general KK particle spectrum,
without any simplifying assumptions. In particular, we do not assume a
completely degenerate KK spectrum and instead retain the dependence on each
individual KK mass. As an application of our results, we calculate the
Kaluza-Klein relic density in the Minimal UED model, turning on coannihilations
with all level one KK particles. We then go beyond the minimal model and
discuss the size of the coannihilation effects separately for each class of
level 1 KK particles. Our results provide the basis for consistent relic
density computations in arbitrarily general models with Universal Extra

Holes in the t-J_z model: a thorough study
The t-J_z model is the strongly anisotropic limit of the t-J model which
captures some general properties of the doped antiferromagnets (AF). The
absence of spin fluctuations simplifies the analytical treatment of hole motion
in an AF background and allows us to calculate the single- and two-hole spectra
with high accuracy using regular diagram technique combined with real-space
approach. At the same time, numerical studies of this model via exact
diagonalization (ED) on small clusters show negligible finite size effects for
a number of quantities, thus allowing a direct comparison between analytical
and numerical results. Both approaches demonstrate that the holes have tendency
to pair in the p- and d-wave channels at realistic values of t/J. The
interactions leading to pairing and effects selecting p and d waves are
thoroughly investigated. The role of transverse spin fluctuations is considered
using perturbation theory. Based on the results of the present study, we
discuss the pairing problem in the realistic t-J-like model. Possible
implications for preformed pairs formation and phase separation are drawn.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figure
Precision Pion-Proton Elastic Differential Cross Sections at Energies Spanning the Delta Resonance
A precision measurement of absolute pi+p and pi-p elastic differential cross
sections at incident pion laboratory kinetic energies from T_pi= 141.15 to
267.3 MeV is described. Data were obtained detecting the scattered pion and
recoil proton in coincidence at 12 laboratory pion angles from 55 to 155
degrees for pi+p, and six angles from 60 to 155 degrees for pi-p. Single arm
measurements were also obtained for pi+p energies up to 218.1 MeV, with the
scattered pi+ detected at six angles from 20 to 70 degrees. A flat-walled,
super-cooled liquid hydrogen target as well as solid CH2 targets were used. The
data are characterized by small uncertainties, ~1-2% statistical and ~1-1.5%
normalization. The reliability of the cross section results was ensured by
carrying out the measurements under a variety of experimental conditions to
identify and quantify the sources of instrumental uncertainty. Our lowest and
highest energy data are consistent with overlapping results from TRIUMF and
LAMPF. In general, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute SM95 partial wave
analysis solution describes our data well, but the older Karlsruhe-Helsinki PWA

Higgs boson mass limits in perturbative unification theories
Motivated in part by recent demonstrations that electroweak unification into
a simple group may occur at a low scale, we detail the requirements on the
Higgs mass if the unification is to be perturbative. We do this for the
Standard Model effective theory, minimal supersymmetry, and next-to-minimal
supersymmetry with an additional singlet field. Within the Standard Model
framework, we find that perturbative unification with sin2(thetaW)=1/4 occurs
at Lambda=3.8 TeV and requires mh<460 GeV, whereas perturbative unification
with sin2(thetaW)=3/8 requires mh<200 GeV. In supersymmetry, the presentation
of the Higgs mass predictions can be significantly simplified, yet remain
meaningful, by using a single supersymmetry breaking parameter Delta_S. We
present Higgs mass limits in terms of Delta_S for the minimal supersymmetric
model and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric model. We show that in
next-to-minimal supersymmetry, the Higgs mass upper limit can be as large as
500 GeV even for moderate supersymmetry masses if the perturbative unification

Plasma sterols and vitamin D are correlates and predictors of ozone-induced inflammation in the lung: A pilot study
BACKGROUND: Ozone (O3) exposure causes respiratory effects including lung function decrements, increased lung permeability, and airway inflammation. Additionally, baseline metabolic state can predispose individuals to adverse health effects from O3. For this reason, we conducted an exploratory study to examine the effect of O3 exposure on derivatives of cholesterol biosynthesis: sterols, oxysterols, and secosteroid (25-hydroxyvitamin D) not only in the lung, but also in circulation. METHODS: We obtained plasma and induced sputum samples from non-asthmatic (n = 12) and asthmatic (n = 12) adult volunteers 6 hours following exposure to 0.4ppm O3 for 2 hours. We quantified the concentrations of 24 cholesterol precursors and derivatives by UPLC-MS and 30 cytokines by ELISA. We use computational analyses including machine learning to determine whether baseline plasma sterols are predictive of O3 responsiveness. RESULTS: We observed an overall decrease in the concentration of cholesterol precursors and derivatives (e.g. 27-hydroxycholesterol) and an increase in concentration of autooxidation products (e.g. secosterol-B) in sputum samples. In plasma, we saw a significant increase in the concentration of secosterol-B after O3 exposure. Machine learning algorithms showed that plasma cholesterol was a top predictor of O3 responder status based on decrease in FEV1 (>5%). Further, 25-hydroxyvitamin D was positively associated with lung function in non-asthmatic subjects and with sputum uteroglobin, whereas it was inversely associated with sputum myeloperoxidase and neutrophil counts. CONCLUSION: This study highlights alterations in sterol metabolites in the airway and circulation as potential contributors to systemic health outcomes and predictors of pulmonary and inflammatory responsiveness following O3 exposure
Effective lagrangian description of top production and decay
We propose a rather general description of residual New Physics (NP) effects
on the top quark couplings. These effects are described in terms of 20 gauge
invariant operators involving gauge and Higgs bosons as well as quarks
of the third family. We compute their implications for the , and vertices and study their observability in the process
with . We present results for
the integrated cross section, the angular distribution and various decay
distribution and polarization asymmetries for NLC energies of .
Observability limits are discussed and interpreted in terms of the NP scales
associated to each operator through the unitarity constraints. The general
landscape of the residual NP effects in the heavy quark and bosonic sectors is

Effect of lactation stage and concurrent pregnancy on milk composition in the bottlenose dolphin
Although many toothed whales (Cetacea: Odontoceti) lactate for 2–3 years or more, it is not known whether milk composition is affected by lactation stage in any odontocete species. We collected 64 pooled milk samples spanning 1–30 months postpartum from three captive bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus. Milks were assayed for water, fat, crude protein (TN × 6.38) and sugar; gross energy was calculated. Ovulation and pregnancy were determined via monitoring of milk progesterone. Based on analysis of changes in milk composition for each individual dolphin, there were significant increases (P<0.05) in fat (in all three dolphins) and crude protein (in two of three), and a decrease (P<0.05) in water (in two of three) over the course of lactation, but the sugar content did not change. In all three animals, the energy content was positively correlated with month of lactation, but the percentage of energy provided by crude protein declined slightly but significantly (P<0.05). At mid-lactation (7–12 months postpartum, n=17), milk averaged 73.0±1.0% water, 12.8±1.0% fat, 8.9±0.5% crude protein, 1.0±0.1% sugar, 1.76±0.09 kcal g−1 (=7.25 kJ g−1) and 30.3±1.3% protein:energy per cent. This protein:energy per cent was surprisingly high compared with other cetaceans and in relation to the growth rates of calves. Milk progesterone indicated that dolphins ovulated and conceived between 413 and 673 days postpartum, following an increase in milk energy density. The significance of these observed compositional changes to calf nutrition will depend on the amounts of milk produced at different stages of lactation, and how milk composition and yield are influenced by sampling procedure, maternal diet and maternal condition, none of which are known
