New approaches for achieving more perfect transition metal oxide thin films
This perspective considers the enormous promise of epitaxial functional transition metal oxide thin films for future applications in low power electronic and energy applications since they offer wide-ranging and highly tunable functionalities and multifunctionalities, unrivaled among other classes of materials. It also considers the great challenges that must be overcome for transition metal oxide thin films to meet what is needed in the application domain. These challenges arise from the presence of intrinsic defects and strain effects, which lead to extrinsic defects. Current conventional thin film deposition routes often cannot deliver the required perfection and performance. Since there is a strong link between the physical properties, defects and strain, routes to achieving more perfect materials need to be studied. Several emerging methods and modifications of current methods are presented and discussed. The reasons these methods better address the perfection challenge are considered and evaluated
Influence of Adiposity on Insulin Resistance and Glycemia Markers Among UK Children of South Asian, Black African-Caribbean, and White European Origin Child Heart and Health Study in England
OBJECTIVE: Ethnic differences in type 2 diabetes risk between South Asians and white Europeans originate before adult life and are not fully explained by higher adiposity levels in South Asians. Although metabolic sensitivity to adiposity may differ between ethnic groups, this has been little studied in childhood. We have therefore examined the associations among adiposity, insulin resistance, and glycemia markers in children of different ethnic origins.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 4,633 9- to 10-year-old children (response rate 68%) predominantly of South Asian, black African-Caribbean, and white European origin (n = 1,266, 1,176, and 1,109, respectively) who had homeostasis model assessments of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), glycemia markers (HbA1c and fasting glucose), and adiposity (BMI, waist circumference, skinfold thicknesses, and bioimpedance [fat mass]).
RESULTS: All adiposity measures were positively associated with HOMA-IR in all ethnic groups, but associations were stronger among South Asians compared to black African-Caribbeans and white Europeans. For a 1-SD increase in fat mass percentage, percentage differences in HOMA-IR were 37.5% (95% CI 33.3â41.7), 29.7% (25.8â33.8), and 27.0% (22.9â31.2), respectively (P interaction < 0.001). All adiposity markers were positively associated with HbA1c in South Asians and black African-Caribbeans but not in white Europeans; for a 1-SD increase in fat mass percentage, percentage differences in HbA1c were 0.04% (95% CI 0.03â0.06), 0.04% (0.02â0.05), and 0.02% (â0.00 to 0.04), respectively (P interaction < 0.001). Patterns for fasting glucose were less consistent.
CONCLUSIONS: South Asian children are more metabolically sensitive to adiposity. Early prevention or treatment of childhood obesity may be critical for type 2 diabetes prevention, especially in South Asians
Effectiveness of a hospital-initiated smoking cessation programme: 2-year health and healthcare outcomes
Background: Tobacco-related illnesses are leading causes of death and healthcare use. Our objective was to determine whether implementation of a hospitalinitiated smoking cessation intervention would reduce mortality and downstream healthcare usage. Methods: A 2-group effectiveness study was completed comparing patients who received the âOttawa Modelâ for Smoking Cessation intervention (n=726) to usual care controls (n=641). Participants were current smokers, >17 years old, and recruited during admission to 1 of 14 participating hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Baseline data were linked to healthcare administrative data. Competing-risks regression analysis was used to compare outcomes between groups. Results: The intervention group experienced significantly lower rates of all-cause readmissions, smoking-related readmissions, and all-cause emergency department (ED) visits at all time points. The largest absolute risk reductions (ARR) were observed for allcause readmissions at 30 days (13.3% vs 7.1%; ARR, 6.1% (2.9% to 9.3%); p<0.001), 1 year (38.4% vs 26.7%; ARR, 11.7% (6.7% to 16.6%); p<0.001), and 2 years (45.2% vs 33.6%; ARR, 11.6% (6.5% to 16.8%); p<0.001). The greatest reduction in risk of allcause ED visits was at 30 days (20.9% vs 16.4%; ARR, 4.5% (0.4% to 8.7%); p=0.03). Reduction in mortality was not evident at 30 days, but significant reductions were observed by year 1 (11.4% vs 5.4%; ARR 6.0% (3.1% to 9.0%); p<0.001) and year 2 (15.1% vs 7.9%; ARR, 7.3% (3.9% to 10.7%); p<0.001). Conclusions: Considering the relatively low cost, greater adoption of hospital-initiated tobacco cessation interventions should be considered to improve patient outcomes and decrease subsequent healthcare usage
Body adiposity index to analyze the percentage of fat in young men aged between 7 and 17âyears
BACKGROUND: The body adiposity index (BAI), uses anthropometry to estimate percent body fat (%F). However, previous studies have shown that the BAI has limited accuracy for children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: We propose to develop and validate an adjusted BAI for use in male children and adolescents from 7 to 17âyears of age. METHODS: The sample consisted of 141 physically active male children and adolescents (age: 12.5â±â2.14). The %F was determined by X-ray dual energy absorptometry equipment (DXA) as the standard method and by BAI, using an equation that uses height and hip circumference. Arithmetic modeling was used to adjust the structure of the BAI mathematical model. RESULTS: The BAI arithmetic adjustment was successful, resulting in the mathematical model named in the present study of adjusted body adiposity index (BAIADJ ). BAI and BAIADJ correlated with DXA (rââ€â.70, pââ.05). CONCLUSION: The adjusted model of the body adiposity index proves to be an effective tool for the analysis of the fat percentage in young males. In addition, it demonstrated significant degrees of agreement and validity in relation to DXA
Two Dimensional Pseudo-Wiener Filtering in Ultrasonic Imaging for Nondestructive Evaluation Applications
This paper deals with the use of a two dimensional pseudo-Wiener filter for ultrasonic image enhancement. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique for the improvement of the lateral resolution and image enhancement of ultrasonic images in materials such as graphite/epoxy composites and stainless steel. The difficulties encountered in the implementation of the filter will be delineated. Methods of overcoming some of these âimplementational hurdlesâ will be suggested
Spin chirality on a two-dimensional frustrated lattice
The collective behavior of interacting magnetic moments can be strongly
influenced by the topology of the underlying lattice. In geometrically
frustrated spin systems, interesting chiral correlations may develop that are
related to the spin arrangement on triangular plaquettes. We report a study of
the spin chirality on a two-dimensional geometrically frustrated lattice. Our
new chemical synthesis methods allow us to produce large single crystal samples
of KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2, an ideal Kagome lattice antiferromagnet. Combined
thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements reveal that the phase
transition to the ordered ground-state is unusual. At low temperatures,
application of a magnetic field induces a transition between states with
different non-trivial spin-textures.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Thermal inactivation and conformational lock studies on glucose oxidase
In this study, the dissociative thermal inactivation
and conformational lock theories are applied for the
homodimeric enzyme glucose oxidase (GOD) in order to
analyze its structure. For this purpose, the rate of activity
reduction of glucose oxidase is studied at various temperatures
using b-D-glucose as the substrate by incubation of
enzyme at various temperatures in the wide range between
40 and 70 ïżœC using UVâVis spectrophotometry. It was
observed that in the two ranges of temperatures, the
enzyme has two different forms. In relatively low temperatures,
the enzyme is in its dimeric state and has normal
activity. In high temperatures, the activity almost disappears
and it aggregates. The above achievements are confirmed
by dynamic light scattering. The experimental
parameter âânââ as the obvious number of conformational
locks at the dimer interface of glucose oxidase is obtained
by kinetic data, and the value is near to two. To confirm the
above results, the X-ray crystallography structure of the
enzyme, GOD (pdb, 1gal), was also studied. The secondary
and tertiary structures of the enzyme to track the thermal
inactivation were studied by circular dichroism and
fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. We proposed a
mechanism model for thermal inactivation of GOD based
on the absence of the monomeric form of the enzyme by
circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy
Mental disorders in a population sample with musculoskeletal disorders
BACKGROUND: Studies using clinical and volunteer samples have reported an elevated prevalence of mood disorders in association with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Clinical studies using anxiety rating scales have reported inconsistent results, but studies using diagnostic instruments have reported that anxiety disorders may be even more strongly associated with arthritis than is depression. One study reported an association between lifetime substance use disorders and arthritis. METHODS: Data from iteration 1.2 of the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) were used. This was a large-scale national Canadian health survey which administered the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview to a sample of 36,984 subjects randomly selected from the national population. In the CCHS 1.2, subjects were asked whether they had been diagnosed by a health professional with arthritis or rheumatism. RESULTS: Subjects reporting arthritis or rheumatism had an elevated prevalence of mood, anxiety and substance use disorders. The strength of association resembled that seen in an omnibus category reporting any chronic condition, but was weaker than that seen with back pain or fibromyalgia. The effect of arthritis or rheumatism interacted with age, such that the odds ratios became smaller with increasing age. Mood and anxiety disorders, along with arthritis or rheumatism made an independent contribution to disability. CONCLUSION: Arthritis is associated with psychiatric morbidity in the general population, and this morbidity is seen across a variety of mental disorders. The strength of association is consistent with that seen in persons with other self-reported medical conditions
