MM Algorithms for Minimizing Nonsmoothly Penalized Objective Functions
In this paper, we propose a general class of algorithms for optimizing an
extensive variety of nonsmoothly penalized objective functions that satisfy
certain regularity conditions. The proposed framework utilizes the
majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm as its core optimization engine. The
resulting algorithms rely on iterated soft-thresholding, implemented
componentwise, allowing for fast, stable updating that avoids the need for any
high-dimensional matrix inversion. We establish a local convergence theory for
this class of algorithms under weaker assumptions than previously considered in
the statistical literature. We also demonstrate the exceptional effectiveness
of new acceleration methods, originally proposed for the EM algorithm, in this
class of problems. Simulation results and a microarray data example are
provided to demonstrate the algorithm's capabilities and versatility.Comment: A revised version of this paper has been published in the Electronic

Resource management implications of ERTS-1 data to Ohio
Initial experimental analysis of ERTS-1 imagery has demonstrated that remote sensing from space is a means of delineating and inventorying Ohio's strip-mined areas, detecting power plant smoke plumes, and proving the data necessary for periodically compiling land use maps for the entire state. The nature and extent of these problems throughout Ohio, how ERTS data can contribute to their solution, and estimates of the long term significance of these initial findings to overall resource management interests in Ohio are summarized

A study of possible sea state information in the sample and hold gate statistics for the GEOS-3 satellite altimeter
The statistical variations in the sample gate outputs of the GEOS-3 satellite altimeter were studied for possible sea state information. After examination of a large number of statistical characteristics of the altimeter waveforms, it was found that the best sea predictor for H-1/3 in the range of 0 to 3 meters was the 75th percentile of sample and hold gate number 11
Soil Management for Intensive Grazing
Recycling of plant nutrients is of major concern in managing paddocks in pasturefields for intensive grazing. Redistribution of nutrients present in fecal and urine deposits is an important issue in growing climatically and seasonally-adapted forage species and for efficient conversion of herbage into animal products while adding to the sustainability of the system. Some of the questions that arise in managing soils for intensive grazing are discussed below
Cellular automaton model of precipitation/dissolution coupled with solute transport
Precipitation/dissolution reactions coupled with solute transport are
modelled as a cellular automaton in which solute molecules perform a random
walk on a regular lattice and react according to a local probabilistic rule.
Stationary solid particles dissolve with a certain probability and, provided
solid is already present or the solution is saturated, solute particles have a
probability to precipitate. In our simulation of the dissolution of a solid
block inside uniformly flowing water we obtain solid precipitation downstream
from the original solid edge, in contrast to the standard reaction-transport
equations. The observed effect is the result of fluctuations in solute density
and diminishes when we average over a larger ensemble. The additional
precipitation of solid is accompanied by a substantial reduction in the
relatively small solute concentration. The model is appropriate for the study
of the r\^ole of intrinsic fluctuations in the presence of reaction thresholds
and can be employed to investigate porosity changes associated with the

Laserprobe 40Ar/39Ar dating of strain fringes: Mid-Cretaceous synconvergent orogen-parallel extension in the interior of the Sevier orogen:
[1] UV and CO2 laser-probe 40Ar/39Ar in situ analyses of phlogopite and muscovite in fibrous strain fringes from greenschist-facies metamorphic rocks document mica growth ages at temperatures lower than their closure temperatures, and therefore directly date deformation. The new dates resolve the age of the earliest ductile fabric recorded in the Raft River–Albion–Grouse Creek metamorphic core complex of Utah and Idaho. Phlogopite was dated in quartz-calcite-phlogopite strain fringes around pyrite in Pennsylvanian-Permian rocks from the Grouse Creek Mountains (Utah) using both the UV and CO2 laser probe; muscovite was dated in quartz-muscovite strain fringes around pyrite in deformed Jurassic sills from the Black Pine Mountains (Idaho) using the CO2 laser probe. Phlogopite 40Ar/39Ar ages for individual strain fringes (Grouse Creek Mountains) range from 92 Ma to 110 Ma, with the most reliable ages ranging from 101 Ma to 110 Ma (mean age, 105.0 ± 5.8 Ma). Muscovite 40Ar/39Ar ages for individual strain fringes (Black Pine Mountains) range from 97 Ma to 112 Ma (mean age, 104.7 ± 5.8 Ma). Strain fringes are associated with a subhorizontal foliation and a generally N-trending elongation lineation exhibiting components of top-to-the-north simple shear and coaxial strain accommodating N-S extension and subvertical shortening. Midcrustal northward flow at 105 (±6) Ma within the interior of the Sevier orogen, coeval with east-directed shortening in the foreland and with plate convergence, records orogen-parallel synconvergent extension. We favor gravitational relaxation of structural culminations resulting from focused crustal shortening as a driving mechanism for orogen-parallel flow
