Weiss oscillations in the electronic structure of modulated graphene
We present a theoretical study of the electronic structure of modulated
graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The density of
states and the bandwidth for the Dirac electrons in this system are determined.
The appearance of unusual Weiss oscillations in the bandwidth and density of
states is the main focus of this work.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted in J. Phys.: Conden. mat
Dephasing in (Ga,Mn)As nanowires and rings
To understand quantum mechanical transport in ferromagnetic semiconductor the
knowledge of basic material properties like phase coherence length and
corresponding dephasing mechanism are indispensable ingredients. The lack of
observable quantum phenomena prevented experimental access to these quantities
so far. Here we report about the observations of universal conductance
fluctuations in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. The analysis of the length and
temperature dependence of the fluctuations reveals a T^{-1} dependence of the
dephasing time.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Potential landscapes and induced charges near metallic islands in three dimensions
We calculate electrostatic potential landscapes for an external probe charge
in the presence of a set of metallic islands. Our numerical calculation in
three dimensions (3D)uses an efficient grid relaxation technique. The
well-known relaxation algorithm for solving the Poisson equation in two
dimensions is generalized to 3D. In addition, all charges on the system, free as
well as induced charges, are determined accurately and self-consistently to
satisfy the desired boundary conditions. This allows the straightforward
calculation of the potential on the outer boundary using the free space
electrostatic Green's function,as well as the calculation of the entire
capacitance matrix of the system. Physically interesting examples of nanoscale
systems are presented and analyzed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR
Optimized design of universal two-qubit gates
We construct optimized implementations of the CNOT and other universal
two-qubit gates that, unlike many of the previously proposed protocols, are
carried out in a single step. The new protocols require tunable inter-qubit
couplings but, in return, show a significant improvements in the quality of
gate operations. Our optimization procedure can be further extended to the
combinations of elementary two-qubit as well as irreducible many-qubit gates.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Ratchet effect in dc SQUIDs
We analyzed voltage rectification for dc SQUIDs biased with ac current with
zero mean value. We demonstrate that the reflection symmetry in the
2-dimensional SQUID potential is broken by an applied flux and with appropriate
asymmetries in the dc SQUID. Depending on the type of asymmetry, we obtain a
rocking or a simultaneously rocking and flashing ratchet, the latter showing
multiple sign reversals in the mean voltage with increasing amplitude of the ac
current. Our experimental results are in agreement with numerical solutions of
the Langevin equations for the asymmetric dc SQUID.Comment: 10 pages including 5 Postscript figure
Magnetic edge states of impenetrable stripe
The electron motion in a strong perpendicular magnetic field close to the
impenetrable stripe is considered by making use of the singular integral
equation technique. The energy spectrum is calculated and compared with the
energy spectrum of the round antidot.Comment: REVTeX4 format, 9 pages with 9 figures (*.eps
Search For A Permanent Electric Dipole Moment Using Atomic Indium
We propose indium (In) as a possible candidate for observing the permanent
electric dipole moment (EDM) arising from the violations of parity (P) and
time-reversal (T) symmetries. This atom has been laser cooled and therefore the
measurement of its EDM has the potential of improving on the current best EDM
limit for a paramagnetic atom which comes from thallium. We report the results
of our calculations of the EDM enhancement factor due to the electron EDM and
the ratio of the atomic EDM to the electron-nucleus scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS)
interaction coupling constant in In in the framework of the relativistic
coupled cluster theory. It might be possible to get new limits for the electron
EDM and the S-PS CP violating coupling constant by combining the results of our
calculations with the measured value of the EDM of In when it is available.
These limits could have important implications for the standard model (SM) of
particle physics.Comment: 5 pages, 1 fig, Rapid Communicatio
Weak localization in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As nanostructures
We report on the observation of weak localization in arrays of (Ga,Mn)As
nanowires at millikelvin temperatures. The corresponding phase coherence length
is typically between 100 nm and 200 nm at 20 mK. Strong spin-orbit interaction
in the material is manifested by a weak anti-localization correction around
zero magnetic field.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
