Dataset Obfuscation: Its Applications to and Impacts on Edge Machine Learning
Obfuscating a dataset by adding random noises to protect the privacy of
sensitive samples in the training dataset is crucial to prevent data leakage to
untrusted parties for edge applications. We conduct comprehensive experiments
to investigate how the dataset obfuscation can affect the resultant model
weights - in terms of the model accuracy, Frobenius-norm (F-norm)-based model
distance, and level of data privacy - and discuss the potential applications
with the proposed Privacy, Utility, and Distinguishability (PUD)-triangle
diagram to visualize the requirement preferences. Our experiments are based on
the popular MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets under both independent and identically
distributed (IID) and non-IID settings. Significant results include a trade-off
between the model accuracy and privacy level and a trade-off between the model
difference and privacy level. The results indicate broad application prospects
for training outsourcing in edge computing and guarding against attacks in
Federated Learning among edge devices.Comment: 6 page
Conductance spectra of metallic nanotube bundles
We report a first principles analysis of electronic transport characteristics
for (n,n) carbon nanotube bundles. When n is not a multiple of 3, inter-tube
coupling causes universal conductance suppression near Fermi level regardless
of the rotational arrangement of individual tubes. However, when n is a
multiple of 3, the bundles exhibit a diversified conductance dependence on the
orientation details of the constituent tubes. The total energy of the bundle is
also sensitive to the orientation arrangement only when n is a multiple of 3.
All the transport properties and band structures can be well understood from
the symmetry consideration of whether the rotational symmetry of the individual
tubes is commensurate with that of the bundle
Influence of unsymmetrical periodicity on extraordinary transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes
Quadrate hole array is explored to study the influence of unsymmetrical
periodicity on extraordinary optical transmission through periodic arrays of
subwavelength holes. It is found that the transmission efficiency of light and
the ratio between transmission efficiencies of horizontal and vertical
polarized light can be continuously tuned by rotating the quadrate hole array.
We can calculate out the transmission spectra (including the heights and
locations of peaks) for any rotation angle with a simple theoretical
model.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Supplementation with probiotics modifies gut flora and attenuates liver fat accumulation in rat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease model
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between gut probiotic flora and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a diet-induced rat model, and to compare the effects of two different probiotic strains on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into 4 groups for 12 weeks: control (standard rat chow), model (fat-rich diet), Lactobacillus (fat-rich diet plus Lactobacillus acidophilus), and Bifidobacterium (fat-rich diet plus Bifidobacterium longum) groups. Probiotics were provided to rats in drinking water (1010/ml). Gut bifidobacteria and lactobacilli were obviously lower at weeks 8 and 10, respectively, in the model group compared with the control group. Supplementation with Bifidobacterium significantly attenuated hepatic fat accumulation (0.10 ± 0.03 g/g liver tissue) compared with the model group (0.16 ± 0.03 g/g liver tissue). However, there was no improvement in intestinal permeability in either the Lactobacillus or the Bifidobacterium group compared with the model group. In all 40 rats, the hepatic total lipid content was negatively correlated with gut Lactobacillus (r = â0.623, p = 0.004) and Bifidobacterium (r = â0.591, p = 0.008). Oral supplementation with probiotics attenuates hepatic fat accumulation. Further, Bifidobacterium longum is superior in terms of attenuating liver fat accumulation than is Lactobacillus acidophilus
