The use of dynamic and diffusive insulation for combined heat recovery and ventilation in buildings.
Modern buildings, domestic and commercial, have attempted to reduce their energy requirements by improving the airtightness of the envelope and increasing the thickness of insulation. However, this trend has developed simultaneously with increased use of synthetic materials in construction, furnishings and decorations, which give off volatile organic compounds, and increasing living standards which result in higher indoor temperature and moisture generation rates within homes. The result has been a reduction in indoor air quality which directly affects occupant health and increasing problems of dampness in homes, particularly for the poor
Obstructions to embeddability into hyperquadrics and explicit examples
We give series of explicit examples of Levi-nondegenerate real-analytic
hypersurfaces in complex spaces that are not transversally holomorphically
embeddable into hyperquadrics of any dimension. For this, we construct
invariants attached to a given hypersurface that serve as obstructions to
embeddability. We further study the embeddability problem for real-analytic

Evaluating the Needs of Cancer Survivors through Focus Groups and Surveillance Data
Introduction
As cancer prevention and treatment advances, cancer survival rates continue to increase. The growing population of cancer survivors have unique needs that must be addressed to improve quality of life throughout the cancer-care continuum.
Methods
Using data compiled from the Michigan cancer registry, the Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (MiBRFS), and focus groups, several areas of need amongst cancer survivors were identified. The cancer registry provides information on incidence and survival rates to help understand the burden of cancer; this Quantitative data from the Michigan cancer registry and MiBRFS can supplement the qualitative data gained from the focus groups.
Results
In focus groups cancer survivors identified the 27 needs that fell into three categories: improving health-related behavior, utilizing health care services, and receiving emotional support. The MiBRFS provided population estimates for 10 of the 27 needs that were identified by the survivors.
Conclusions
As the cancer survival rate increases, providers and public health workers must implement and promote services that provide care to patients from diagnosis to post-treatment. A population surveillance system, in conjunction with focus groups, can shed light on the exact needs that must be addressed. Surveillance data can demonstrate the impact of public health interventions, like tobacco cessation policies and system change projects, which ultimately impact the health and quality of life of cancer survivors
An exploration of concepts of community through a case study of UK university web production
The paper explores the inter-relation and differences between the concepts of occupational community, community of practice, online community and social network. It uses as a case study illustration the domain of UK university web site production and specifically a listserv for those involved in it. Different latent occupational communities are explored, and the potential for the listserv to help realize these as an active sense of community is considered. The listserv is not (for most participants) a tight knit community of practice, indeed it fails many criteria for an online community. It is perhaps best conceived as a loose knit network of practice, valued for information, implicit support and for the maintenance of weak ties. Amplitude to phase conversion of InGaAs pin photo-diodes for femtosecond lasers microwave signal generation
When a photo-diode is illuminated by a pulse train from a femtosecond laser,
it generates microwaves components at the harmonics of the repetition rate
within its bandwidth. The phase of these components (relative to the optical
pulse train) is known to be dependent on the optical energy per pulse. We
present an experimental study of this dependence in InGaAs pin photo-diodes
illuminated with ultra-short pulses generated by an Erbium-doped fiber based
femtosecond laser. The energy to phase dependence is measured over a large
range of impinging pulse energies near and above saturation for two typical
detectors, commonly used in optical frequency metrology with femtosecond laser
based optical frequency combs. When scanning the optical pulse energy, the
coefficient which relates phase variations to energy variations is found to
alternate between positive and negative values, with many (for high harmonics
of the repetition rate) vanishing points. By operating the system near one of
these vanishing points, the typical amplitude noise level of commercial-core
fiber-based femtosecond lasers is sufficiently low to generate state-of-the-art
ultra-low phase noise microwave signals, virtually immune to amplitude to phase

A measurement of lifetime differences in the neutral D-meson system
Using a high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the
FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we compare the lifetimes of neutral D mesons
decaying via D0 to K- pi+ and K- K+ to measure the lifetime differences between
CP even and CP odd final states. These measurements bear on the phenomenology
of D0 - D0bar mixing. If the D0 to K-pi+ is an equal mixture of CP even and CP
odd eigenstates, we measure yCP = 0.0342 \pm 0.0139 \pm 0.0074.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Search for CP violation in D0 and D+ decays
A high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the FOCUS
(E831) experiment at Fermilab has been used to search for CP violation in the
Cabibbo suppressed decay modes D+ to K-K+pi+, D0 to K-K+ and D0 to pi-pi+. We
have measured the following CP asymmetry parameters: A_CP(K-K+pi+) = +0.006 +/-
0.011 +/- 0.005, A_CP(K-K+) = -0.001 +/- 0.022 +/- 0.015 and A_CP(pi-pi+) =
+0.048 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.025 where the first error is statistical and the second
error is systematic. These asymmetries are consistent with zero with smaller
errors than previous measurements.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Measurements of the Sigma_c^0 and Sigma_c^{++} Mass Splittings
Using a high statistics sample of photoproduced charmed particles from the
FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we measure the mass splittings of the
charmed baryons Sigma_c^0 and Sigma_c^{++}. We find M(Sigma_c^0 - Lambda_c^+) =
167.38 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13 MeV/c^2 and M(Sigma_c^++ - Lambda_c^+) = 167.35 +/-
0.19 +/- 0.12 MeV/c^2 with samples of 362 +/- 36 and 461 +/- 39 events,
respectively. We measure the isospin mass splitting M(Sigma_c^++ - Sigma_c^0)
to be -0.03 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.11 Mev/c^2. The first errors are statistical and the
