Shape Memory Alloy Actuator Design: CASMART Collaborative Best Practices
Upon examination of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuation designs, there are many considerations and methodologies that are common to them all. A goal of CASMART's design working group is to compile the collective experiences of CASMART's member organizations into a single medium that engineers can then use to make the best decisions regarding SMA system design. In this paper, a review of recent work toward this goal is presented, spanning a wide range of design aspects including evaluation, properties, testing, modeling, alloy selection, fabrication, actuator processing, design optimization, controls, and system integration. We have documented each aspect, based on our collective experiences, so that the design engineer may access the tools and information needed to successfully design and develop SMA systems. Through comparison of several case studies, it is shown that there is not an obvious single, linear route a designer can adopt to navigate the path of concept to product. SMA engineering aspects will have different priorities and emphasis for different applications

Thermal and Air Quality Acceptability in Buildings that Reduce Energy by Reducing Minimum Airflow from Overhead Diffusers
There is great energy-saving potential in reducing variable air volume (VAV) box minimum airflow setpoints.In the past, setpoints have been maintained at high levels because of three concerns: 1) low flows might cause the occupants draft discomfort from insufficient mixing of diffuser discharge air, 2) inability of VAV boxes to control at low flows, and 3) poor air quality resulting from a combination of poor control and insufficient diffuser mixing. It is worth examining these concerns to see whether they are justified. The controller accuracy and stability have recently been addressed by RP 1353, in which VAV boxes were found to control well at very low flow levels. The diffuser mixing issue and impact on comfort are addressed in this research project, RP 1515.RP 1515 is a combined field and laboratory study, in which occupants’ thermal comfort and air quality satisfaction is evaluated in the field under reduced minimum VAV flow rate setpoints, and the mixing performance of diffusers is measured in the laboratory. The laboratory portion was performed with co-funding from Price Industries. Additional co-funding from the California Energy Commission’s PIER program allowed us to quantify the HVAC energy savings resulting from the reduced flows in the field study buildings.
Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST): A Technology Roadmap for the Next Decade
The Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) is a set of
mission concepts for the next generation of UVOIR space observatory with a
primary aperture diameter in the 8-m to 16-m range that will allow us to
perform some of the most challenging observations to answer some of our most
compelling questions, including "Is there life elsewhere in the Galaxy?" We
have identified two different telescope architectures, but with similar optical
designs, that span the range in viable technologies. The architectures are a
telescope with a monolithic primary mirror and two variations of a telescope
with a large segmented primary mirror. This approach provides us with several
pathways to realizing the mission, which will be narrowed to one as our
technology development progresses. The concepts invoke heritage from HST and
JWST design, but also take significant departures from these designs to
minimize complexity, mass, or both.
Our report provides details on the mission concepts, shows the extraordinary
scientific progress they would enable, and describes the most important
technology development items. These are the mirrors, the detectors, and the
high-contrast imaging technologies, whether internal to the observatory, or
using an external occulter. Experience with JWST has shown that determined
competitors, motivated by the development contracts and flight opportunities of
the new observatory, are capable of achieving huge advances in technical and
operational performance while keeping construction costs on the same scale as

WMO Guidelines on Multi-hazard Impact-based Forecast and Warning Services Part II: Putting Multi-hazard IBFWS into Practice
This new addition to the Guidelines, Part II – Putting Multi-hazard IBFWS into Practice, is intended to be authoritative and useful. It is certainly not dogmatic or exhaustive. IBFWS is a rapidly evolving field and the additional chapters here should be considered as reflecting and complementing the growing body of literature on IBFWS, emanating from WMO such as the HiWeather project The Future of Forecasts: Impact-based Forecasting for Early Action, the 2020 guide published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). In addition to these Guidelines, a wealth of additional material, including many more case studies and information and training resources, is available on a companion web page at the
WMO website.
Globally, we are still in the very early stages of implementing IBFWS, and there is still much benefit to be offered, especially to the most vulnerable communities in the world, through continuing the work of applying the concepts of IBFWS and strengthening them wherever possible. The team of experts who assembled these Guidelines hope that they can make some contribution to this progress

Our growing awareness of the microbial world’s importance and diversity contrasts starkly with our limited understanding of its fundamental structure. Despite recent advances in DNA sequencing, a lack of standardized protocols and common analytical frameworks impedes comparisons among studies, hindering the development of global inferences about microbial life on Earth. Here we present a meta-analysis of microbial community samples collected by hundreds of researchers for the Earth Microbiome Project. Coordinated protocols and new analytical methods, particularly the use of exact sequences instead of clustered operational taxonomic units, enable bacterial and archaeal ribosomal RNA gene sequences to be followed across multiple studies and allow us to explore patterns of diversity at an unprecedented scale. The result is both a reference database giving global context to DNA sequence data and a framework for incorporating data from future studies, fostering increasingly complete characterization of Earth’s microbial diversity

Recommendations for effective documentation in regional anesthesia: an expert panel Delphi consensus project
Background and objectives: Documentation is important for quality improvement, education, and research. There is currently a lack of recommendations regarding key aspects of documentation in regional anesthesia. The aim of this study was to establish recommendations for documentation in regional anesthesia.
Methods: Following the formation of the executive committee and a directed literature review, a long list of potential documentation components was created. A modified Delphi process was then employed to achieve consensus amongst a group of international experts in regional anesthesia. This consisted of 2 rounds of anonymous electronic voting and a final virtual round table discussion with live polling on items not yet excluded or accepted from previous rounds. Progression or exclusion of potential components through the rounds was based on the achievement of strong consensus. Strong consensus was defined as ≥75% agreement and weak consensus as 50%-74% agreement.
Results: Seventy-seven collaborators participated in both rounds 1 and 2, while 50 collaborators took part in round 3. In total, experts voted on 83 items and achieved a strong consensus on 51 items, weak consensus on 3 and rejected 29.
Conclusion: By means of a modified Delphi process, we have established expert consensus on documentation in regional anesthesia
GWAS meta-analysis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy implicates multiple hepatic genes and regulatory elements
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-specific liver disorder affecting 0.5–2% of pregnancies. The majority of cases present in the third trimester with pruritus, elevated serum bile acids and abnormal serum liver tests. ICP is associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes, including spontaneous preterm birth and stillbirth. Whilst rare mutations affecting hepatobiliary transporters contribute to the aetiology of ICP, the role of common genetic variation in ICP has not been systematically characterised to date. Here, we perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and meta-analyses for ICP across three studies including 1138 cases and 153,642 controls. Eleven loci achieve genome-wide significance and have been further investigated and fine-mapped using functional genomics approaches. Our results pinpoint common sequence variation in liver-enriched genes and liver-specific cis-regulatory elements as contributing mechanisms to ICP susceptibility
