A garden in the desert? A regional study of ranching and farming in Southern Nevada, 1870-1930

In the years between 1870 and 1930 Southern Nevada ranchers were actively engaged in reclaiming the land for agriculture. The availability of cheap land, artesian water, railroad transportation, nearby markets, along with enthusiastic support from town boosters facilitated their determined efforts to develop agriculture as a viable economic activity. Ranching and farming played an important role in Southern Nevada\u27s early development and contributed in a significant way to its economic growth. Moreover, it reflects a noteworthy and integral part of the area\u27s history

Ideas on DC-DC Converters for Delivery of Low Voltage and High Currents for the SLHC / ILC Detector Electronics in Magnetic field and Radiation environments

    Get PDF
For more efficient power transport to the electronics embedded inside large colliding beam detectors, we explore the feasibility of supplying 48 Volts DC and using local DCDC conversion to 2 V (or lower, depending upon on the lithography of the embedded electronics) using switch mode regulators located very close to the front end electronics. These devices will be exposed to high radiation and high magnetic fields, 10 – 100 Mrads and 2 - 4 Tesla at the SLHC, and 20 Krads and 6 Tesla at the ILC

Privacy and Security Attitudes, Beliefs and Behaviours: Informing Future Tool Design

    Get PDF
Usable privacy and security has become a significant area of interest for many people in both industry and academia. A better understanding of the knowledge and motivation is an important factor in the design of privacy and security tools. However, users of these tools are a heterogeneous group, and many past studies of user characteristics in the security and privacy domain have looked only at a small subset of factors to define differences between groups of users. The goal of this research is to critically look at the difference between people, their opinions and habits when it comes to issues of privacy and security. To address this goal, 32 in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted and analyzed to look at the heterogenous nature of this community. The participant’s attitudes and actions around the dimensions of knowledge about tools and of motivation for self-protection were used to cluster participants. The traits of these participant clusters are used to create a set of privacy and security personas, or prototypical privacy and security tool users. These personas are a tool for incorporating a broader understanding of the diversity of users into the design of privacy and security tools

The effects of explicitness of customization and level of choice on listener attitudes, behaviors and cognitions toward a customized music radio application

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the effects of type of customization, specifically explicit and non-explicit customization, and level of choice on listener attitudes, behaviors, and cognitions. It attempts to make a modest contribution in this direction by examining decision-making and media effects when users encounter the interplay between the explicitness of the customization process and the number of choices offered in a customized radio application. It details the methods and results of an experiment (N=72) designed to examine the research questions. Results indicate that neither independent variable has significant effects user attitudes toward the application or willingness to pay for the application; however, there was a marginally significant main effect for level of choice on number of songs listened to. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed

Surface diffusion in catalysts probed by APGSTE NMR

In this work we report the application of a recently developed experimental protocol using Pulsed Field Gradient (PFG) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques to simultaneously assess bulk pore and surface diffusion coefficients in liquid saturated porous catalysts. This method has been developed to study solvent effects on the diffusion of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) in mesoporous 1 wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst trilobes. The selection of solvents used in this work is known to have a complex effect on reaction rates and hence catalyst performance in heterogeneous liquid phase catalysis. Here, we report the bulk pore and surface diffusion characteristics of MEK, water and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in 1 wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst trilobes. The results show that the physicochemical interactions of molecules in the porous catalyst matrix are very different for the different molecules. We also find that the mobility of water appears to be affected strongest by the catalyst surface

    Positronium reflection and positronium beams

Specular reflection of positronium, Ps was observed and that there is adequate intensity at higher energies to make further study worthwhile was established. The scattering appears to be restricted to the outermost surface with a mean free path of (0.75 + or - 0.15)A for Ps in LiF(100). With a greater intensity Ps beam one should see higher order diffraction beams as the result of the periodicity of the surface. Ps diffraction thus offers the possibility of being a novel and valuable probe to study the outermost surface and to study adsorbants on it. Two methods for producing Ps beams are described
