A global data set of soil particle size properties

    Get PDF
A standardized global data set of soil horizon thicknesses and textures (particle size distributions) was compiled. This data set will be used by the improved ground hydrology parameterization designed for the Goddard Institute for Space Studies General Circulation Model (GISS GCM) Model 3. The data set specifies the top and bottom depths and the percent abundance of sand, silt, and clay of individual soil horizons in each of the 106 soil types cataloged for nine continental divisions. When combined with the World Soil Data File, the result is a global data set of variations in physical properties throughout the soil profile. These properties are important in the determination of water storage in individual soil horizons and exchange of water with the lower atmosphere. The incorporation of this data set into the GISS GCM should improve model performance by including more realistic variability in land-surface properties

Unveiling Palomar 2: The Most Obscure Globular Cluster in the Outer Halo

    Get PDF
We present the first color-magnitude study for Palomar 2, a distant and heavily obscured globular cluster near the Galactic anticenter. Our (V,V-I) color-magnitude diagram (CMD), obtained with the UH8K camera at the CFHT, reaches V(lim) = 24 and clearly shows the principal sequences of the cluster, though with substantial overall foreground absorption and differential reddening. The CMD morphology shows a well populated red horizontal branch with a sparser extension to the blue, similar to clusters such as NGC 1261, 1851, or 6229 with metallicities near [Fe/H] = -1.3.Fromanaverageofseveralindicators,weestimatetheforegroundreddeningatE(B−V)=1.24+−0.07andobtainatruedistancemodulus(m−M)0=17.1+−0.3. From an average of several indicators, we estimate the foreground reddening at E(B-V) = 1.24 +- 0.07 and obtain a true distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 17.1 +- 0.3, placing it about 34 kpc from the Galactic center. We use starcounts of the bright stars to measure the core radius, half-mass radius, and central concentration of the cluster. Its integrated luminosity is M_V = -7.9, making it clearly brighter and more massive than most other clusters in the outer halo.Comment: 25 pages, aastex, with 8 postscript figures; accepted for publication in AJ, September 1997. Gypsy moths and American dog ticks: Space partners

    Get PDF
An experiment intended for the space shuttle and designed to investigate the effects of weightlessness and total darkness on gypsy moth eggs and engorged American dog ticks is described. The objectives are: (1) to reevaluate the effects of zero gravity on the termination of diapause/hibernation of embryonated gypsy moth eggs, (2) to determine the effect of zero gravity on the ovipositions and subsequent hatch from engorged female American dog ticks that have been induced to diapause in the laboratory, and (3) to determine whether morphological or biochemical changes occur in the insects under examination. Results will be compared with those from a similar experiment conducted on Skylab 4

Monodon baculovirus from Australia: Ultrastructural observations

    Get PDF
The cytopathology, virogenesis and replication of monodon baculovirus (MBV) in Penaeus monodon from Australia are described. Electron-dense unenveloped nucleocapsids, not previously described for MBV, are shown in the cytoplasm and attached to the nuclear envelope of infected hepatopancreatocytes. These nucleocapsids comprise a missing link in the published literature on the replication cycle of MBV by providing evidence for the means by which the viral genome travels from the plasma membrane of the hepatopancreatocyte to the nucleus. Features similar to those of MBV from other areas, but not previously reported for MBV from Australia include empty capsids attached to the nuclear pore, central filaments in developing capsids, capsids partly filled with nucleic acid, and filaments in subapical envelope expansions. A model for virogenesis and replication is illustrated which takes into account the new observations as well as previously described ultrastructural characteristics of the developing viral particle
