The Benefits of Peer Review and a Multisemester Capstone Writing Series on Inquiry and Analysis Skills in an Undergraduate Thesis.
This study examines the relationship between the introduction of a four-course writing-intensive capstone series and improvement in inquiry and analysis skills of biology senior undergraduates. To measure the impact of the multicourse write-to-learn and peer-review pedagogy on student performance, we used a modified Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education rubric for Inquiry and Analysis and Written Communication to score senior research theses from 2006 to 2008 (pretreatment) and 2009 to 2013 (intervention). A Fisher-Freeman-Halton test and a two-sample Student's t test were used to evaluate individual rubric dimensions and composite rubric scores, respectively, and a randomized complete block design analysis of variance was carried out on composite scores to examine the impact of the intervention across ethnicity, legacy (e.g., first-generation status), and research laboratory. The results show an increase in student performance in rubric scoring categories most closely associated with science literacy and critical-thinking skills, in addition to gains in students' writing abilities

Rapid Steel Tooling Via Solid Freeform Fabrication
With increasing part complexity and requirements for long production runs, tooling has
become an expensive process that requires long lead times to manufacture. This lengthens the
amount oftime from "art to part". Rapid tooling via stereolithography (SLA), filled epoxies, etc.
have been stopgap measures to produce limited prototyping runs from (10 to 500 parts). This
gives poor dimensional analysis and does not allow for limited production runs of 1000+ parts.
The method ofproducing prototype tooling with a powdered metal process has been developed
that produces tooling with a hardness greater than 35 HRC and total shrinkage less than 0.5%.
This tooling process manufactures production ready tooling that will perform extended cycle
runs (100,000+). Manufacturing ofthis tooling takes 1 to 2 weeks and will compare favorably
with production grade steel tooling. Originals drawn in 3D CAD can be used to prototype the
master that will allow for the production ofthe rapid metal tool set.
process starts with a rapid prototyped model made by whatever process is desired or
a machined master. For this paper a Sander's Model Maker IIÂź rapid prototyping machine was
used to fabricate the model. After the model ofthe tool set is made, a silicone rubber negative is
cast around that model. After the silicone rubber model is made, a heated slurry ofmetal
powders and polymers is poured into the mold to create the green tool set. The tool set is left to
cool, and then removed from the silicone rubber mold. The tool set is then debound and sintered
to produce a final tool set with properties approaching hardened tool steel.Mechanical Engineerin
Introduction: Tricksters, humour and activism
This special issue, entitled âThe Trickster Activist in Global Humour and Comedyâ, investigates the relevance of the concept of the trickster for explaining activist expressions that emanate from comedians, or that appear in comedy and humour more generally. Comedy has traditionally been viewed as an aesthetic or entertainment medium. It has often been charged with encouraging stereotype and the affirmation of mainstream audience beliefs. Despite this, we argue, there have been moments in recent history where comedians have given their performances an increased level of social and political consciousness that resonates with the public at large, or with sections of the public. Comedians, we argue, are able to reach this level of social commentary due to their potential to become tricksters. Paradoxically, the mythical trickster is a liminal entity, one that is adept at destruction as well as creation, or at conservativism as well radicalism. The articles in this issue explore the complexity of the trickster concept, showing some of the polysemy involved in the social activism enabled by comedy and humour
On the area of the symmetry orbits in symmetric spacetimes
We obtain a global existence result for the Einstein equations. We show that
in the maximal Cauchy development of vacuum symmetric initial data with
nonvanishing twist constant, except for the special case of flat Kasner initial
data, the area of the group orbits takes on all positive values. This
result shows that the areal time coordinate which covers these spacetimes
runs from zero to infinity, with the singularity occurring at R=0.Comment: The appendix which appears in version 1 has a technical problem (the
inequality appearing as the first stage of (52) is not necessarily true), and
since the appendix is unnecessary for the proof of our results, we leave it
out. version 2 -- clarifications added, version 3 -- reference correcte
Trends in Speech Therapy in the Elementary Public Schools of the United States
One of the most significant developments in the American Educational System has been the extension of instructional services to Exceptional Children. The term âexceptional childrenâ has come to be applied to children who need special services because of physical, intellectual or personal-social differences from other children. In no other aspect has this development meant so much as it has in rendering educational assistance to the children with speech defects. Educators have long realized the importance of speech in the conduction of everyday life, but until recent years speech therapy had shown little progress
On the area of the symmetry orbits in symmetric spacetimes with Vlasov matter
This paper treats the global existence question for a collection of general
relativistic collisionless particles, all having the same mass. The spacetimes
considered are globally hyperbolic, with Cauchy surface a 3-torus. Furthermore,
the spacetimes considered are isometrically invariant under a two-dimensional
group action, the orbits of which are spacelike 2-tori. It is known from
previous work that the area of the group orbits serves as a global time
coordinate. In the present work it is shown that the area takes on all positive
values in the maximal Cauchy development.Comment: 27 pages, version 2 minor changes and correction
