    OBSERVED NONLINEAR RESPONSES IN PATTERNED SUPERCONDUCTING, FERROMAGNETIC, AND INTERACTING THIN FILMS

    Many advances in technology ranging from biology and medicine through engineering and computer science to fundamental physics and chemistry depend upon the capability to control the fabrication of materials and devices at the submicron scale. Quantum mechanical effects become increasingly important to atomic and molecular interactions as the distances between neighbors decrease. These effects will provide materials and device designers with additional flexibility to establish properties of the designers choice, but the cost of this additional flexibility must be paid in the complexity of nonlinearities entering the interactions and the design process. The work presented here has provided several early results on three such interactions among closely-spaced submicron material structures: 1) the properties of superconductivity have been studied, 2) the properties of ferromagnetism have been studied, and 3) the interactions between superconductivity and ferromagnetism have been studied. Since our work was published, there has been considerable interest in all three of these wide-open areas and hundreds or thousands of additional results are now in the literature. We have used standard methods from the semiconductor industry as well as innovative methods to fabricate micron and submicron devices for observation. Standard optical lithography and standard electron beam lithography have been implemented to shape micron and submicron structures, respectively. Additionally, a laser interferometric lithography method has been invented and used to shape submicron structures. The materials used were vanadium, niobium, nickel, and/or permalloy. We have utilized SQUID magnetometry and Hall effect magnetometry to observe the properties of superconductor structures and superconductorferromagnetic mixed systems. We have used SQUID magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance to observe the physical properties of ferromagnetic structures and the interactions between adjacent structures. Using these materials and methods we have discovered an unusual paramagnetic Meissner effect in thin Nb films that exists at igh-applied magnetic fields. We have discovered fluxoid matching anomalies at low sample temperature. And we have discovered interactions between electron exchange and magnetic dipole forces. Additionally, we have found clear evidence to support several past hypotheses advanced by other authors

    Effect of Maternal Borderline Personality Disorder on Romantic Attachment in Adolescence

    Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and chronic disorder that has been described as a disorder of attachment. The present study examined the effect of maternal BPD and borderline personality features on the romantic attachment styles of mothers with BPD and their 14-17 year old offspring. In a low socioeconomic status (SES) sample of n=28 adolescents whose mothers have BPD and n=28 normative comparisons, groups were compared on maternal and adolescent self-reported romantic attachment styles. Across the sample as a whole, the relationship between borderline features and romantic attachment styles were assessed. Also, the relationship between maternal borderline features and adolescent romantic attachment ratings were assessed. Mothers with BPD reported themselves as more anxious and more avoidant than normative comparisons did. Adolescent offspring of mothers with BPD also rated themselves as more anxious and more avoidant that normative comparisons did. Maternal anxiety and maternal avoidance correlated with adolescent avoidance. Maternal anxiety correlated with all maternal BPD features. Maternal avoidance correlated with identity problems, negative relationships, self harm, and total borderline features. Adolescent ratings of anxiety correlated with all adolescent borderline features. Maternal anxiety correlated with adolescent affective instability and total borderline features. Results are discussed in terms of precursors to BPD

    Convergence versus Divergence of Social and Developmental Measures of Adult Attachment: Testing Jay Belsky’s Proposals

    The current study assessed the empirical relationship between two social and developmental attachment measures in a sample of female adults, half of whom were diagnosed with BPD. Following Belsky (2002)’s conceptualization of the possible relationship between these two attachment traditions, the current study assessed two mutually exclusive propositions regarding the Adult attachment interview (AAI) and the experiences in close relationships (ECR) questionnaire. First, it is possible the AAI and ECR assess the same mental representations of attachment, but empirical correspondence does not emerge unless accommodations for method variance are made. Or second, AAI and ECR are not related to each other directly, but converge on another attachment-related construct. Correspondence analyses suggested a significant positive correlation between AAI preoccupied/unresolved and ECR anxiety dimensions, but not between AAI dismissing and ECR avoidance or AAI 4-way classifications and ECR cluster-based categories. This partially supports Belsky’s first proposition and suggests the AAI and ECR are not assessing entirely the same attachment representations but do assess one important aspect. Convergence analyses found both ECR anxiety and the AAI preoccupied/unresolved dimension were significantly correlated with borderline features. Because they were significantly related to each other, too, this did not fully support Belsky’s second proposition of independent contributions to an attachment related construct. However, the correlation was moderate and the ECR provided more variance in borderline features than did the AAI, suggesting partial support for Belsky’s second proposition As a whole findings suggest limited support for Belsky (2002)’s first proposition that if methodological differences are removed, there is some association between the two sets of measures. Moreover, there is some suggestion that AAI and ECR’s provide some independent contribution to borderline features, in support for Belsky (2002)’s second proposition Future comparison research would benefit from using research paradigms that are adaptive and assess social and developmental attachment in a range of contexts using a variety of methodologies. This could enhance our understanding of how these traditions relate and identify key points of convergence and divergence

    Exploring experiences of proculturation in international students during the COVID-19 pandemic

    This study intends to find what are the experiences of international students semiotically adapting to unfamiliar signs in the United Kingdom before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six international university students to learn about their experiences of adapting to a new country. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes were classified as dialogical self in interpersonal adaptation and linguistic elements of semiotic adaptation, each with two subthemes. Participants’ experiences of merging self-constructs seem reflective of proculturation theory. The researchers termed ‘language bridges’ to refer to social representations dependent on language-specific signs. Some of the participants’ self-constructs relied on signs not provided by the environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, proculturation offers insight into the complex psychological and social processes of adapting to unfamiliar signs

    Analysis of rolling group therapy data using conditionally autoregressive priors

    Group therapy is a central treatment modality for behavioral health disorders such as alcohol and other drug use (AOD) and depression. Group therapy is often delivered under a rolling (or open) admissions policy, where new clients are continuously enrolled into a group as space permits. Rolling admissions policies result in a complex correlation structure among client outcomes. Despite the ubiquity of rolling admissions in practice, little guidance on the analysis of such data is available. We discuss the limitations of previously proposed approaches in the context of a study that delivered group cognitive behavioral therapy for depression to clients in residential substance abuse treatment. We improve upon previous rolling group analytic approaches by fully modeling the interrelatedness of client depressive symptom scores using a hierarchical Bayesian model that assumes a conditionally autoregressive prior for session-level random effects. We demonstrate improved performance using our method for estimating the variance of model parameters and the enhanced ability to learn about the complex correlation structure among participants in rolling therapy groups. Our approach broadly applies to any group therapy setting where groups have changing client composition.     Dynamin- and Rab5-Dependent Endocytosis of a Ca<sup>2+</sup>-Activated K<sup>+</sup> Channel, KCa2.3

    Regulation of the number of ion channels at the plasma membrane is a critical component of the physiological response. We recently demonstrated that the Ca2+-activated K+ channel, KCa2.3 is rapidly endocytosed and enters a Rab35- and EPI64C-dependent recycling compartment. Herein, we addressed the early endocytic steps of KCa2.3 using a combination of fluorescence and biotinylation techniques. We demonstrate that KCa2.3 is localized to caveolin-rich domains of the plasma membrane using fluorescence co-localization, transmission electron microscopy and co-immunoprecipitation (co-IP). Further, in cells lacking caveolin-1, we observed an accumulation of KCa2.3 at the plasma membrane as well as a decreased rate of endocytosis, as assessed by biotinylation. We also demonstrate that KCa2.3 and dynamin II are co-localized following endocytosis as well as demonstrating they are associated by co-IP. Further, expression of K44A dynamin II resulted in a 2-fold increase in plasma membrane KCa2.3 as well as a 3-fold inhibition of endocytosis. Finally, we evaluated the role of Rab5 in the endocytosis of KCa2.3. We demonstrate that expression of a dominant active Rab5 (Q79L) results in the accumulation of newly endocytosed KCa2.3 on to the membrane of the Rab5-induced vacuoles. We confirmed this co-localization by co-IP; demonstrating that KCa2.3 and Rab5 are associated. As expected, if Rab5 is required for the endocytosis of KCa2.3, expression of a dominant negative Rab5 (S34N) resulted in an approximate 2-fold accumulation of KCa2.3 at the plasma membrane. This was confirmed by siRNA-mediated knockdown of Rab5. Expression of the dominant negative Rab5 also resulted in a decreased rate of KCa2.3 endocytosis. These results demonstrate that KCa2.3 is localized to a caveolin-rich domain within the plasma membrane and is endocytosed in a dynamin- and Rab5-dependent manner prior to entering the Rab35/EPI64C recycling compartment and returning to the plasma membrane. © 2012 Gao et al

    Automated tagging of environmental data using a novel SKOS formatted environmental thesaurus

    There is increasing need to use the widest range of data to address issues of environmental management and change, which is reflected in increasing emphasis from government funding agencies for better management and access to environmental data. Bringing together different environmental datasets to confidently enable integrated analysis requires reference to common standards and definitions, which are frequently lacking in environmental data, due to the broad subject area and lack of metadata. Automatic inclusion within datasets of controlled vocabulary concepts from publicly available standard vocabularies facilitates accurate annotation and promotes efficiency of metadata creation. To this end, we have developed a thesaurus capable of describing environmental chemistry datasets. We demonstrate a novel method for tagging datasets, via insertion of this thesaurus into a Laboratory Information Management System, enabling automated tagging of data, thus promoting semantic interoperability between tagged data resources. Being web available, and formatted using the Simple Knowledge Organisation System (SKOS) semantic standard, this thesaurus is capable of providing links both to and from other relevant thesauri, thus facilitating a linked data approach. Future developments will see extension of the thesaurus by the user community, in terms of both concepts included and links to externally hosted vocabularies. By employing a Linked Open Data approach, we anticipate that Web-based tools will be able to use concepts from the thesaurus to discover and link data to other information sources, including use in national assessment of the extent and condition of environmental resources

    Validity and Reliability of Surface Electromyography Measurements from a Wearable Athlete Performance System

    The Athos ® wearable system integrates surface electromyography (sEMG ) electrodes into the construction of compression athletic apparel. The Athos system reduces the complexity and increases the portability of collecting EMG data and provides processed data to the end user. The objective of the study was to determine the reliability and validity of Athos as compared with a research grade sEMG system. Twelve healthy subjects performed 7 trials on separate days (1 baseline trial and 6 repeated trials). In each trial subjects wore the wearable sEMG system and had a research grade sEMG system’s electrodes placed just distal on the same muscle, as close as possible to the wearable system’s electrodes. The muscles tested were the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), and biceps femoris (BF). All testing was done on an isokinetic dynamometer. Baseline testing involved performing isometric 1 repetition maximum tests for the knee extensors and flexors and three repetitions of concentric-concentric knee flexion and extension at MVC for each testing speed: 60, 180, and 300 deg/sec. Repeated trials 2-7 each comprised 9 sets where each set included three repetitions of concentric-concentric knee flexion-extension. Each repeated trial (2-7) comprised one set at each speed and percent MVC (50%, 75%, 100%) combination. The wearable system and research grade sEMG data were processed using the same methods and aligned in time. The amplitude metrics calculated from the sEMG for each repetition were the peak amplitude, sum of the linear envelope, and 95th percentile. Validity results comprise two main findings. First, there is not a significant effect of system (Athos or research grade system) on the repetition amplitude metrics (95%, peak, or sum). Second, the relationship between torque and sEMG is not significantly different between Athos and the research grade system. For reliability testing, the variation across trials and averaged across speeds was 0.8%, 7.3%, and 0.2% higher for Athos from BF, VL and VM, respectively. Also, using the standard deviation of the MVC normalized repetition amplitude, the research grade system showed 10.7% variability while Athos showed 12%. The wearable technology (Athos) provides sEMG measures that are consistent with controlled, research grade technologies and data collection procedures
