    Impact of catchment-derived nutrients and sediments on marine water quality on the Great Barrier Reef: an application of the eReefs marine modelling system

    Water quality of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is determined by a range of natural and anthropogenic drivers that are resolved in the eReefs coupled hydrodynamic - biogeochemical marine model forced by a process-based catchment model, GBR Dynamic SedNet. Model simulations presented here quantify the impact of anthropogenic catchment loads of sediments and nutrients on a range of marine water quality variables. Simulations of 2011–2018 show that reduction of anthropogenic catchment loads results in improved water quality, especially within river plumes. Within the 16 resolved river plumes, anthropogenic loads increased chlorophyll concentration by 0.10 (0.02–0.25) mg Chl m−3. Reductions of anthropogenic loads following proposed Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan targets reduced chlorophyll concentration in the plumes by 0.04 (0.01–0.10) mg Chl m−3. Our simulations demonstrate the impact of anthropogenic loads on GBR water quality and quantify the benefits of improved catchment management

    Prospects for Studies of Stellar Evolution and Stellar Death in the JWST Era

    I review the prospects for studies of the advanced evolutionary stages of low-, intermediate- and high-mass stars by the JWST and concurrent facilities, with particular emphasis on how they may help elucidate the dominant contributors to the interstellar dust component of galaxies. Observations extending from the mid-infrared to the submillimeter can help quantify the heavy element and dust species inputs to galaxies from AGB stars. JWST's MIRI mid-infrared instrument will be so sensitive that observations of the dust emission from individual intergalactic AGB stars and planetary nebulae in the Virgo Cluster will be feasible. The Herschel Space Observatory will enable the last largely unexplored spectral region, the far-IR to the submillimeter, to be surveyed for new lines and dust features, while SOFIA will cover the wavelength gap between JWST and Herschel, a spectral region containing important fine structure lines, together with key water-ice and crystalline silicate bands. Spitzer has significantly increased the number of Type II supernovae that have been surveyed for early-epoch dust formation but reliable quantification of the dust contributions from massive star supernovae of Type II, Type Ib and Type Ic to low- and high-redshift galaxies should come from JWST MIRI observations, which will be able to probe a volume over 1000 times larger than Spitzer.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures.     Glastir Monitoring & Evaluation Programme. Second year annual report

    What is the purpose of Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme? Glastir is the main scheme by which the Welsh Government pays for environmental goods and services whilst the Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (GMEP) evaluates the scheme’s success. Commissioning of the monitoring programme in parallel with the launch of the Glastir scheme provides fast feedback and means payments can be modified to increase effectiveness. The Glastir scheme is jointly funded by the Welsh Government (through the Rural Development Plan) and the EU. GMEP will also support a wide range of other national and international reporting requirements. What is the GMEP approach? GMEP collects evidence for the 6 intended outcomes from the Glastir scheme which are focussed on climate change, water and soil quality, biodiversity, landscape, access and historic environment, woodland creation and management. Activities include; a national rolling monitoring programme of 1km squares; new analysis of long term data from other schemes combining with GMEP data where possible; modelling to estimate future outcomes so that adjustments can be made to maximise impact of payments; surveys to assess wider socio-economic benefits; and development of novel technologies to increase detection and efficiency of future assessments. How has GMEP progressed in this 2nd year? 90 GMEP squares were surveyed in Year 2 to add to the 60 completed in Year 1 resulting in 50% of the 300 GMEP survey squares now being completed. Squares will be revisited on a 4 year cycle providing evidence of change in response to Glastir and other pressures such as changing economics of the farm business, climate change and air pollution. This first survey cycle collects the baseline against which future changes will be assessed. This is important as GMEP work this year has demonstrated land coming into the scheme is different in some respects to land outside the scheme. Therefore, future analysis to detect impact of Glastir will be made both against the national backdrop from land outside the scheme and this baseline data from land in scheme. A wide range of analyses of longterm data has been completed for all Glastir Outcomes with the exception of landscape quality and historic features condition for which limited data is available. This has involved combining data with 2013/14 GMEP data when methods allow. Overall analysis of long term data indicates one of stability but with little evidence of improvement with the exception of headwater quality, greenhouse gas emissions and woodland area for which there has been improvement over the last 20 years. Some headline statistics include: 51% of historic features in excellent or sound condition; two thirds of public rights of way fully open and accessible; improvement in hedgerow management with 85% surveyed cut in the last 3 years but < 1% recently planted; 91% of streams had some level of modification but 60% retained good ecological quality; no change topsoil carbon content over last 25 years. What is innovative? GMEP has developed various new metrics to allow for more streamlined reporting in the future. For example a new Priority Bird species Index for Wales which combines data from 35 species indicates at least half have stable or increasing populations. The new GMEP Visual Quality Landscape Index has been tested involving over 2600 respondents. Results have demonstrated its value as an objective and repeatable method for quantifying change in visual landscape quality. A new unified peat map for Wales has been developed which has been passed to Glastir Contract Managers to improve targeting of payments when negotiating Glastir contracts. An estimate of peat soil contribution to current greenhouse gas emissions due to human modification has been calculated. Models have allowed quantification of land area helping to mitigate rainfall runoff. We are using new molecular tools to explore the effects of Glastir on soil organisms and satellite technologies to quantify e.g. small woody features and landcover change. Finally we are using a community approach to develop a consensus on how to define and report change in High Nature Value Farmland which will be reported in the Year 3 GMEP report

    Final Report to Welsh Government, prepared by CEH on behalf of the Glastir Monitoring & Evaluation Programme Team. The Glastir Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (GMEP) provides a comprehensive programme to establish a baseline against which future assessments of Glastir can be made. GMEP also contributes national trend data which supports a range of national and international biodiversity and environmental targets. GMEP fulfils a commitment by the Welsh Government to establish a monitoring programme concurrently with the launch of the Glastir scheme. The use of models and farmer surveys provides early indicators of the likely direction, magnitude and timing of future outcomes. The programme ensures compliance with the rigorous requirements of the European Commission’s Common Monitoring and Evaluation Framework (CMEF) through the Rural Development Plan (RDP) for Wales. This report represents the final results of the GMEP programme which ran from 2012 to 2016

    Gender Specific Associations between Frailty and Body Composition

    BACKGROUND: Frailty is a widespread geriatric syndrome, but its relationship with body composition is largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: Assess the relationship between body composition and frailty in older persons. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Cross-sectional data analyses in 120 community-dwelling older persons (50 men, 70 women, mean age 78.5 \ub1 6 yr). MEASUREMENTS: Frailty was measured according to Fried's criteria and calculated as a score, and also a binary variable. Anthropometric measures were obtained (height, weight), and body composition (total lean body mass, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), total fat mass, and percentage fat), assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Multiple regression and logistic regression analyses stratified by gender were conducted. RESULTS: Frailty, as a binary measure, was more prevalent in women than men (67.1% vs 46% p=0.04). Prevalence of low muscle mass (ASM/ht2) was higher in men than in women (40.0% vs 32.9%, p=0.04). Using gender-specific percentage fat cut-scores (27% men, 38% women, respectively) obesity was more prevalent in women than men (58.6% vs 34%, respectively, p=0.01). Multiple regression models showed age as an independent associated factor of frailty in men (\u3b2 0.310, p=0.009) and women (\u3b2 .581 p<0.001). ASM/ht2 was a significant associated factor in men (\u3b2 -0.517, p<0.001) and trended towards significance in women (\u3b2 -0.188, p=0.06). Percentage fat was a significant associated factor in women only (\u3b2 0.234, p=0.02). Logistic regression with frailty as a binary dependent variable yielded similar results. CONCLUSION: In this sample of older adults, the significant associated factor of frailty in men was ASM/ht2, whereas it was percentage fat in women. These associations were independent of age. With increasing longevity and the high prevalence of sarcopenia and obesity in older populations, these findings have public health implications. Larger sample and specifically designed studies are needed in order to confirm and extend these findings

    Influence of ORF2 on host cell tropism of feline immunodeficiency virus

    Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus associated with an immunodeficiency syndrome of the domestic cat. A short open reading frame (ORF2), of unknown function, is present in all FIV isolates. We have investigated the role of ORF2 in determining the cell tropism of two infectious molecular clones of FIV. FIV-PPR is able to productively infect feline peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) and a T lymphocyte cell line (MCH5-4), but not a feline astrocyte cell line (G355-5) or Crandell feline kidney cells (CrFK). In contrast, FIV-34TF10 is able to productively infect G355-5 and CrFK cells, but not PBLs or MCH5-4 cells. The major difference in these FIV clones is that ORF2 in FIV-PPR is capable of encoding a 79-amino-acid peptide, whereas there is a stop codon in ORF2 after 43 amino acids in FIV-34TF10. We performed site-directed mutagenesis to change the stop codon (TGA) in FIV-34TF10 to a tryptophan (TGG), the amino acid present at this location in FIV-PPR. FIV-34TF10 with ORF2 repaired (FIV-ORF2rep) productively infected PBLs, MCH5-4 cells, and primary macrophages, as well as CrFK and G355-5 cells, indicating that a protein encoded by ORF2 plays a role in determining the host cell tropism of FIV. ORF2 contains hydrophobic, acidic, and leucine-rich domains similar to those shown to be important for transactivating proteins of other lentiviruses. Coexpression of a plasmid expressing the ORF2 gene product with another construct expressing the chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) gene driven by the FIV LTR, resulted in transactivation of CAT expression in both feline and human cells

    Sexually dimorphic patterns of nutritional intake and eating behaviors in community-dwelling older adults with normal and slow gait speed

    OBJECTIVES: Assess sex-specific nutritional intake and dietary habits of independently living older adults with normal and slow gait speeds. DESIGN: New Mexico Aging Process Study, cross-sectional, secondary data analysis. SETTING: Albuquerque, New Mexico USA. PARTICIPANTS: Three-hundred fifteen adults 60 years and older (194 women and 121 men). MEASUREMENTS: Gait speed test, 3-day diet records, Mini-Mental State Examination, and body mass index. RESULTS: Slow gait speed was associated with lower total calories (-154 kcal/day) and zinc (1 mg/day) (.05 < p < .1). Slower men consumed less protein (-4.1 g/day), calcium (-140 mg), fiber (-2.8 g/day) and iron (-2.5 mg/day) (p 64.05). Slower women consumed less, protein (-5.5 g/day), carbohydrate (-19.1 g/day), fiber (-2.7 gm/day), vitamin C (-18.4 mg/day) and higher fat intake (p=0.03). Slower women snacked less, had trouble chewing/biting, and lived alone (p= .04). Slower men were less likely to snack. CONCLUSIONS: We found sex-specific nutritional differences associated with gait speed. Those presenting with slow gait speed may need encouragement to increase meat and whole grain breads/cereal. Those with trouble eating should be advised on adapting diet to maintain adequate nutrition and encouraged on regular snacking to achieve higher nutrient intake. Prospective and randomized controlled studies are needed to confirm these findings and provide further evidence for putting these suggestions into practice
