Population changes of Ad_lie and emperor penguins along the Prince Olav Coast and on the Riiser-Larsen Peninsula

The trends of penguin populations are thought to be reliable indicators of ecosystem changes in the Southern Ocean. There are seven Ad_lie penguin colonies and one emperor penguin colony along the Prince Olav Coast and one emperor penguin colony on the Riiser-Larsen Peninsula. We compiled and analyzed the available data collected by airborne and ground census between 1971 and 2000 in order to determine the breeding status of penguins in this area. Ad_lie penguin populations increased at two colonies; no apparent trends were observed at other colonies. Emperor penguin populations were high in the mid-1990s and suddenly decreased in 2000. Populations need to be carefully monitored in the coming years

Scalar Transfer across a Turbulent/non-turbulent Interface in a Planar Jet

This fluid dynamics video is an entry for the Gallery of Fluid Motion of the 66th Annual Meeting of the APS-DFD. In this video, the scalar transfer across the turbulent/non-turbulent (T/NT) interface in a planar jet is investigated by using a direct numerical simulation. Anti-Carcinogenic Effects of a Serine Protease Inhibitor (FOY-305) through the Suppression of Neutral Serine Protease Activity During Chemical Hepatocarcinogenesis in Rats

Anti-carcinogenic effect of a serine protease inhibitor, [N, N-dimethylcarbamoylmethyl 4-(4-guanidinobenzoyloxy)-phenylacetate] methanesulfate (FOY-305), was studied in rats with neutral serine protease during hepatocarcinogenesis induced by a single intraperitoneal administration of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and following feeding of a diet containing 2-N-fluorenylacetamide (FAA) for 32 weeks. Oral administration of FOY-305 significantly suppressed development of -γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP)positive hyperplastic nodules, preneoplastic lesion, at the 8th week of DEN injection, and that of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) formation at the 32nd week. Neutral protease activity increased in the preneoplastic and neoplastic livers. The activities in the preneoplastic and tumor-bearing livers were much lower in FOY-305-treated group compared with those in control group. Neutral protease partially purified from neoplastic liver at the 32nd week was inhibited by FOY-305 in vitro. Shipper collaboration matching: fast enumeration of triangular transports with high cooperation effects

The logistics industry in Japan is facing a severe shortage of labor. Therefore, there is an increasing need for joint transportation allowing large amounts of cargo to be transported using fewer trucks. In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence and other new technologies has gained wide attention for improving matching efficiency. However, it is difficult to develop a system that can instantly respond to requests because browsing through enormous combinations of two transport lanes is time consuming. In this study, we focus on a form of joint transportation called triangular transportation and enumerate the combinations with high cooperation effects. The proposed algorithm makes good use of hidden inequalities, such as the distance axiom, to narrow down the search range without sacrificing accuracy. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm is thousands of times faster than simple brute force. With this technology as the core engine, we developed a joint transportation matching system. The system has already been in use by over 150 companies as of October 2022, and was featured in a collection of logistics digital transformation cases published by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
