Implications of Fermi-LAT observations on the origin of IceCube neutrinos

The IceCube (IC) collaboration recently reported the detection of TeV-PeV extraterrestrial neutrinos whose origin is yet unknown. By the photon-neutrino connection in pppp and pγp\gamma interactions, we use the \fermi-LAT observations to constrain the origin of the IC detected neutrinos. We find that Galactic origins, i.e., the diffuse Galactic neutrinos due to cosmic ray (CR) propagation in the Milky Way, and the neutrinos from the Galactic point sources, may not produce the IC neutrino flux, thus these neutrinos should be of extragalactic origin. Moreover, the extragalactic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may not account for the IC neutrino flux, the jets of active galactic nuclei may not produce the IC neutrino spectrum, but the starburst galaxies (SBGs) may be promising sources. As suggested by the consistency between the IC detected neutrino flux and the Waxman-Bahcall bound, GRBs in SBGs may be the sources of both the ultrahigh energy, >1019>10^{19}eV, CRs and the 1−1001-100~PeV CRs that produce the IC detected TeV-PeV neutrinos.Comment: JCAP accepted version; 8 pages, 2 figs; discussion on blazar origin added; conclusion unchange

The anabolic action of PTH in bone is mostly mediated by cAMP/PKA and Wnt-independent activation of β-catenin/T-cell factor (TCF) signaling. β-Catenin switches the PTH receptor (PTHR) signaling from cAMP/PKA to PLC/PKC activation by binding to the PTHR. Ixazomib (Izb) was recently approved as the first orally administered proteasome inhibitor for the treatment of multiple myeloma; it acts in part by inhibition of pathological bone destruction. Proteasome inhibitors were reported to stabilize β-catenin by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. However, how Izb affects PTHR activation to regulate β-catenin/TCF signaling is poorly understood. In the present study, using CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technology, we show that Izb reverses β-catenin-mediated PTHR signaling switch and enhances PTH-induced cAMP generation and cAMP response element-luciferase activity in osteoblasts. Izb increases active forms of β-catenin and promotes β-catenin translocation, thereby dissociating β-catenin from the PTHR at the plasma membrane. Furthermore, Izb facilitates PTH-stimulated GSK3β phosphorylation and β-catenin phosphorylation. Thus Izb enhances PTH stimulation of β-catenin/TCF signaling via cAMP-dependent activation, and this effect is due to its separating β-catenin from the PTHR. These findings provide evidence that Izb may be used to improve the therapeutic efficacy of PTH for the treatment of osteoporosis and other resorptive bone diseases

Strong Cosmic Censorship in Charged de Sitter spacetime with Scalar Field Non-minimally Coupled to Curvature

We examine the stability and the strong cosmic censorship in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter (RN-dS) black hole by investigating the evolution of a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the curvature. We find that when the coupling parameter is negative, the RN-dS black hole experiences instability. The instability disappears when the coupling parameter becomes non-negative. With the increase of the coupling parameter, the violation of the strong cosmic censorship occurs at a larger critical charge ratio. But such an increase of the critical charge is suppressed by the increase of the cosmological constant. Different from the minimal coupling situation, it is possible to accommodate β≥1\beta\ge1 in the near extremal black hole when the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to curvature. The increase of the cosmological constant can allow β≥1\beta\ge1 to be satisfied for even smaller value of the coupling parameter. The existence of β≥1\beta\ge1 implies that the resulting curvature can continuously cross the Cauchy horizon.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 5 table

QCD corrections to Upsilon production via color-octet states at the Tevatron and LHC

The NLO QCD corrections to Upsilon production via S-wave color-octet states Upsilon(^1S_0^8,^3S_1^8) at the Tevatron and LHC is calculated. The K factors of total cross section (ratio of NLO to LO) are 1.313 and 1.379 for Upsilon(^1S_0^8) and Upsilon(^3S_1^8) at the Tevatron, while at the LHC they are 1.044 and 1.182, respectively. By fitting the experimental data from the D0, the matrix elements for S-wave color-octet states are obtained. And new predictions for Upsilon production are presented. The prediction for the polarization of inclusive Upsilon contains large uncertainty rising from the polarization of Upsilon from feed-down of chi_b. To further clarify the situation, new measurements on the production and polarization for direct Upsilon are expected.Comment: 13 pages, 10 Figure
