    A Multi-Layer Graphical Model for Approximate Identity Matching

    Many organizations maintain identity information for their customers, vendors, and employees, etc. However, identities being compromised cannot be retrieved effectively. In this paper we first present a case study on identity problems existing in a local police department. The study show that more than half of the sampled suspects have altered identities existing in the police information system due to deception and errors. We build a taxonomy of identity problems based on our findings. The decision to determine matching identities involves some uncertainty because of the problems identified. We propose a probability-based multi-layer graphical model to capture the uncertainty. Experiments show that the proposed model performs significantly better than the searching technique based on exact-match. With 20% of training data labeled, the model with semi-supervised learning achieved performance comparable to that of fully supervised learning

    A complete ancient RNA genome : identification, reconstruction and evolutionary history of archaeological Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus

    The origins of many plant diseases appear to be recent and associated with the rise of domestication, the spread of agriculture or recent global movements of crops. Distinguishing between these possibilities is problematic because of the difficulty of determining rates of molecular evolution over short time frames. Heterochronous approaches using recent and historical samples show that plant viruses exhibit highly variable and often rapid rates of molecular evolution. The accuracy of estimated evolution rates and age of origin can be greatly improved with the inclusion of older molecular data from archaeological material. Here we present the first reconstruction of an archaeological RNA genome, which is of Barley Stripe Mosaic Virus (BSMV) isolated from barley grain ~750 years of age. Phylogenetic analysis of BSMV that includes this genome indicates the divergence of BSMV and its closest relative prior to this time, most likely around 2000 years ago. However, exclusion of the archaeological data results in an apparently much more recent origin of the virus that postdates even the archaeological sample. We conclude that this viral lineage originated in the Near East or North Africa, and spread to North America and East Asia with their hosts along historical trade routes

    Disaster operations management is an increasingly important application area for the developing techniques of service science. This paper examines the use of topic maps, a semantic technology, within this environment, and provides a preliminary discussion of the benefits that its implementation can provide in the capture and exchange of contextual information. The discussion is motivated by a look at the different phases of disaster operations management in a services context, and focuses on the need for effective and relevant information exchange as an important part of the services process. As the amount and complexity of information increases within such processes, semantic technologies are becoming increasingly important as a means representing and managing contextual information. This paper seeks to help further the understanding of the relevance of such tools as part of the study of service science

    Searching for Authoritative Documents in Knowledge-Base Communities

    Knowledge-based communities are popular Web-based tools that allow members to share and seek knowledge globally. However, research on how to search effectively within such knowledge repositories is scant. In this paper we study the problem of finding authoritative documents for user queries within a knowledge-based community. Unlike prior research on the ranking function design which considers only content or hyperlink information, we leverage the social network information embedded in the rich social media, in addition to content, to design novel ranking strategies. Using the Knowledge Adoption Model as the guiding theoretical framework, we design features that gauge the two major factors affecting users’ knowledge adoption decisions: argument quality (AQ) and source credibility (SC). We design two ranking strategies that blend these two sources of evidence with the content-based relevance judgment. A preliminary study using a real world knowledge-based community showed that both AQ and SC features improved search effectiveness

    Acid Polishing of Lead Crystal Glass

    The industrial partner manufactures high quality lead crystal glassware. The cutting of decorative features in the glass damages the surface and the cuts are optically opaque; to restore transparency, the glass is polished in a solution of hydrofluoric (HF) and sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 .) The polishing process comprises three stages: 1. immersion in a polishing tank containing acid; 2. rinsing in a tank containing water; and 3. settlement of the solid reaction products in a settlement tank. The manufacturer hopes to optimise its polishing process to • minimise the health/environmental impact of the process; • maximise throughput; • maintain the sharpness of the cut edges while still polishing to an acceptable level of transparency. The study group was asked to focus on modelling three aspects of the process: • the chemical reactions involved in the etching at the glass-acid solution interface; • the removal of reaction products in the settlement tank; • flow within the polishing tank

    Quantification of Gender-related Stereotypes in Psychotherapy Sessions

    Gender-related stereotypes and biases can have severe consequences in the medical domain, especially in mental health therapy. In this study, we analyzed 91 psychotherapy transcripts from the Alexander Street database to investigate whether gender-related stereotypes differ in the treatment of patients by male versus female therapists using natural language processing and statistical analyses. We built a lexicon of ten high-level categories that capture sentence-level attributes and represent gender-related stereotypes. Our results suggest significant statistical differences in categories such as active, negatives, positives, etc., during the treatment of female patients by male therapists as compared to female therapists. We built logistic regression models using the ten high-level lexical categories to predict the gender of the therapist. We also provide recommendations on how our analytical methods can be used, along with other advanced deep-learning methods, to detect and reduce gender-related stereotypes in psychotherapy sessions

    Electrical transport in amorphous semiconducting AlMgB14 films

    The electrical transport properties of semiconducting AlMgB14films deposited at room temperature and 573K are reported in this letter. The as-deposited films are amorphous, and they exhibit high n-type electrical conductivity, which is believed to stem from the conduction electrons donated by Al, Mg, and/or Fe impurities in these films. The film deposited at 573K is less conductive than the room-temperature-deposited film. This is attributed to the nature of donor or trap states in the band gap related to the different deposition temperatures

    A Meta-Analysis on the Determinants of Online Review Helpfulness

    Online consumer reviews can help customers decrease uncertainty and risk faced in online shopping. However, information overload and conflicting comments in online reviews can get consumers confused. Therefore, it is important for both researchers and practitioners to understand the characteristics of helpful reviews. But studies examining the determinants of perceived review helpfulness produce mixed findings. We review extant research about the determinant factors of perceived helpfulness. Conflicting findings exist for six review related factors, namely review extremity, review readability, review total votes, linear review rating, quadratic review rating, and review sentiment. We conduct a meta-analysis to reconcile the contradictory findings on the influence of review related factors over perceived review helpfulness. The meta-analysis results confirm that review extremity, readability, total votes, and positive sentiment have a negative influence on helpfulness, but review rating is positively related to helpfulness. We also examine those studies whose findings are contradictive with the meta-analysis results. Measure discrepancy and reviewed product type are the two main reasons why mixed findings exist in extant research
